Marriage is a matter of CIVIL rights and PROP 8 is clearly discriminatory. People may think that homosexuality is morally wrong based on their mormon beliefs. I can accept that since having an opinion is an inherent right. However, something is clearly wrong with society when religious beliefs are used as a rational for stripping people of their fundamental rights!
We all know that mormons were encouraged to donate funds to the "Yes on 8 campaign" by their leaders. Stop fooling yourself.
"Separate your church from my state? Seems like the state spoke and wanted marriage between a man and a woman. No church official 'ordered' mormons to give $. Indeed, some prominent Mormons gave $ FOR gay marriage. Mormons vote the way they wish and support causes they wish to support. If they happen to agree with the church president then they donate as suggested. Why do we all have to agree gay marriage is ok? I am free to believe it's wrong. Talk about freedom!!
One problem with that argument. There is a sort of mandate that faithful Mormons have when their prophet speaks. It's like God Himself has spoken. Make sense? You should have seen the division that was created when some Mormons voted FOR same sex marriage. When they were even a little vocal about it many were ostracized by their Mormon community and congregation. It happens far too often.
Any faithful Mormon voting against traditional marriage has the right to do so and the right to expect other mormons not to like it. However, if Mormons are ostracising each other for differing opinions, it seems to me they are forgetting that the prophet also urged civility and tolerance. The bishops over such congregations need to do a little in-office instruction! What happened to Christian charity?
am going to be making a documentary about how the Mormon church is wrong on this issue and want to have it completed in the next few weeks. If interested in telling your story of being an ex-mormon and gay or transgender issues or intersex issues let me know and I would love to interview you. You can contact me at crognan on youtube. I am a broadcast producer and will make this resonate with the nation in a very succinct and poignant documentary.
The church gave 20 million to the cause. Regardless of tithing money, they spent money, and large chunk to make sure that Prop 8 would pass. What assertions are false? The separation of Church and state shouldn't be admonished? Human rights should be dictated by the Bible and the BOM? So you mentioned that the church didn't give any money but then mention 50%, do you represent the church only 50% on this issue, or do you 50% agree with religious attack on civil liberties?
The Church did not give ANY money to the Yes on 8 Campaign. Tithe money DID NOT go to this. All the church did was ask members to do all they could to see Prop 8 passed. It was INDIVIDUAL Members who gave large donations, and they were taxed as political contributions. True, the LDS donated over 50% of the total funds, but as individual members, not representing the church as a whole. The assertions that are being made by the protesters are completely false.
They should have been yelling 'Burn it down..." It's a symbol of the vilest filthiness.
