hes using 3 layer on for the scanned drawing, another for the shading, and another for the toning. all he has to do is click on another layer and it will only affect that layer. i think thats the question your asking, im going to be posting photoshop manga lessons on my page you can check them out ill be descriping the fundamentals to making a manga and using photoshop

You must play with your scaning preferences to find the best way to scan... there are even books on scaning that you can read...

It doesn't matter JPG or PNG... it's quality that you must control. There must be additional software with your scanner, that controls scanning process, brightness, colors etc. You must play with each of them... to find out what you need...

I haven't tried Photoshop yet, but all of the tutorials look practically identical to GIMP, and I like GIMP a lot. Even if it's not as good as Photoshop, you're right, it's still free :)

There is only one feature that Gimp does not have and that's vector tools and most people don't even know what they are let alone need them.

I wouldn't say that it's better or worse, they're very different. Manga Studio is mostly for adding details and specific features, while Photoshop is for general graphical work and can do all the same things, but would take a lot more effort; that said, it can do just about anything if you can find out how or develop techniques yourself. If you're interested in the subject, you should probably give both a try and see what suits you.

you should invest in a wacom tablet; maybe.

I spent 80$ on mine, just a really old pen tablet, small, 4"x3" drawing area, a "starter's learning pad" really, but it is amazing!

You could probably nail some smooth lines and shadings on your first go (like for your white reflected light). the Wacom Bamboo pen tablets are cheap (~100$ US).

Maybe buy one and try it out, see how much you use it (might not be enough), and return it if it's not for you.

...OMG man...ok, umm...just get a pen tablet... and get Manga Studio...it comes with a LARGE set of tones, for various uses...u can make ur own brushes, and it has different types of pens (and pencil tools for ur sketching)... its way better to use than using photoshop wen it comes to making manga... so ye, just get those things...it takes time to get used to a pen tablet, but trust me, its 100% worth it...

Mac or PC, doesn't matter. Adobe Photoshop is the most used editor but costs $500-600 for Photoshop CS3, GIMP is free if I'm not mistaken. It's like MS Paint on steroids trying to impersonate photoshop very poorly in my opinion. I've got both and use PS cuz GIMP is lacking a lot of features.

they can range from $20-$200 depending on the brand and quality. Keep in mind, when using a scanner for animation, cel shading, and anime, you don't need high quality because you have to ink things yourself and color your drawing.
