  • Ubuntu Unity and GNOME 3 is just abysmal. It's just not usable. What really annoyed me was even simple things such as making a short cut to a program on the desktop was counter intuitive. Seriously, why do I have to go to the Dash every time I want to do something? Why do I have to type in a program's name if I want to launch that program? What was wrong with the ordered and logical point and click environment in GNOME 2? Nothing was wrong with it; it was perfect.

  • Remindes me of Mac OS X Lion (The features. Not the design itself). I like it. I would use it if I have to use a desktop Linux.

  • Fix bugs and allow more customization and maybe I'll like it but until then... xfce all the way :)

  • I love Unity in Ubuntu 11.10 ! :) And I hate Windows 8 with metro (WTF??:D).

  • @mattyy1cz LOL metro another memory sink for a windows OS, I have not looked at 8 got help everyone if there file system is worse than Vista or 7.

  • @Faelsun What is wrong with the NTFS in "Windows 8" as it is worse than in Vista and 7?

Are you talking about filesystems or volume mount points or hierarchical directory structure?

  • I'm trying to decide which is better before I do a new install- Unity or Gnome 3. Gnome 3 looks better but I think that Unity seems a little more functional. I'm still using Gnome 2 but I think I wouldn't mind a change. Nice view of Hong Kong on the wallpaper. I love that place! Thanks for the demo.

  • The funny things is: I hear all this hate about it. And now I look at it, and *FINALLY* somebody had the balls to throw that horrible epic fail of a paradigm that Win95/Mac windowing is over board. Which is something that is definitely likable if you’re not a conservatard.

But lack of options and configurability plus that theme… that’s the same triple-facepalm-like horrible monster-fail that is OS X. Because psychologically it harms smart and supports dumb people, guaranteeing an Idiocracy.

  • @Evi1M4chine - linux has always been great for supporting alternative stripped down ways of working i.e. lightweight window managers, tiling window managers. Its' a shame a lot of the software doesn't seem to work well with a tiling setup though.

i like the way unity handles fullscreen with the menubar/titlebar rolled into one. My only compaint with Unity is, I want fast desktop switching e.g screen-corners, mousewheel on desktop, one icon per desktop.

  • @walter0bz I like it, hoping it gets ported to a few other choice distros, wonder if its small enough for web based distros. I really have always hated Gnome anyway. The funny thing is to me it looks like a hotkey system for running raids on mmorpgs.

  • @Faelsun - I've seen 'unity 2d' but what I really want is the same design decisions (regarding maximize/menu) merged into a lightweight WM like fluxbox ..but there's probably ways of configuring those to be as good already. Unity 2D still seemed slower than flux box. I would like to see a super light WM adapted for touchscreen too, to make a decent ubuntu-tablet on existing low power ARM devices.. linux has always excelled in letting lesser hardware punch above its weight

  • I've been using a Mac for dev recently mostly, 'expose+spaces' with their multitouch trackpad is/was THE best windowmanagment system IMO (it lets a small mac monitor punch above its weight). However they have totally ruined this with OSX lion, which is now schizoid between fullscreen/windowing, and actually shows you LESS useful information and wastes screenspace when you make a 'reveal more' type gesture with its dumb 'app-bundles'. (which just look very pretty the first time you see them)

  • no such thing as UDS, you made that shit up. GFY (go fuck yourself <-- i made that one up just for you.

  • @Yayakills Shit you are smart, UDS is Ubuntu Developers Summit, Google it genius

  • @musl1m You are right about UDS, but you are totally wrong about Ubuntu being operating system or even most popular or most widely used distribution in the world).

  • @Yayakills Can you at least do some research before commenting a comment like that..

  • @74ryanwolf Oh that comment was pretty official.

  • @Yayakills what the hell is that supposed to mean?

  • @74ryanwolf Exactly.

  • Thank god for Mint

  • Linux users can be so arrogant at times, what is it with people who can't accept change at all?

Gnome 3 is a huge leap from Gnome 2, and Unity is a brand new UI. I really love it, so whatever floats your boat. Linux is about options, get over your hardcore hatred of new changes.

  • @SebastienCade That's the problem - you just said it. Linux is about options - forcing Gnome3 on people doesn't leave them with any other options besides find another DE or OS. A real shame as Gnome2 is just about perfect now.

  • @22ness0hayden

But if you're a novice, you should know how to change Gnome 3 to Gnome 2 or vice versa. No matter what linux distro you choose, you can customize it. No one is FORCED to do anything.

  • @SebastienCade Mate, it's not about changes. I love changes. I just hate that nobody consulted this change with me! ;)

I don't mind Gnome3 but I don't like Unity and hate it's the default shell now. It looks like it was designed for old people with sight problems and totally non-technical dumb blondes. I'll probably hate it even more in Oneiric, although, there's a slight chance I may try it and actually like it.

  • @cgofme

Oh I get that, but if you know how to use linux at all you can easily uninstall Unity and switch to Gnome 3 or even stick with Gnome 2. That's why I'm so confused by everyones hardcore dislike. On a Widescreen display with the 3D enabled Unity is really beautiful, to me. Not as many options as one would like, but if you're just getting on for basic computer functions it's a great little UI. My parents like it, I just revert back to Gnome 2 whenever I need to do other things. Go Mint!

  • @SebastienCade I don't like Mint even more. I love Gentoo, just need a free night to compile it. But I didn't need a free night before Ubuntu went Unity - I was happy with it. Now I'm not. It's as simple as that.

  • nice video.. but whats with all that muslim shit? noone gives a fuck if you are muslim or not

  • Just stop complaining and send in bug reports so it can be fixed. I had both beta releases and sent in a few bug reports, all were resolved before launch. My system works great now. I also wasn't such a big fan of unit at first but its very easy and makes computing productive. That said there is still a lot of things to be fixed and added. For core users we need to be able to tweak/customize everything and those features will come.

  • I don't know why i became very uncomfortable when the music started. The very beginning i men. hehehe!

  • Very nice demo! I'm still running 10.10 and am going to hold off on installing 11.04 until things are a bit more stable with Unity. I also really like Gnome 3 so I might just move to Fedora (since I'm a RedHat partner anyway) and go with that. Gnome 3 is every bit as nice as Unity IMHO.

  • It's crap.

  • @cgofme 10.10 Unity = crap.

    11.04 Unity = awesome.

  • @rinkavideos64 PS: No,I am not Mark Shuttleworth.

  • @rinkavideos64 I actually meant 11.10.

  • @cgofme 10.10, you mean, I know the upload date of this video when Unity 11.04 wasn't there, just saying :) So you *should* try out 11.04, there's the classic desktop that can greet you when choose it while logging on, no worries, but 11.10 will drop classic defktop.

  • @rinkavideos64 Edit: I still gave you a thumbs up because the creator was showing 10.10, BUT I would disagree with you at all costs if you meant 11.04. Even on my mammoot 18.4 inch 1080p laptop.

  • @rinkavideos64 "update-manager -d" says I meant 11.10. If there's no Gnome Classic in clean install, I don't know, but after upgrade there was and it didn't differ from 11.04 much. I currently use Gentoo with KDE and never was so glad to change a distribution before. However, thank you for your reply.

  • @cgofme There is one because of stability reasons, but when 11.10 GTK3 unity will be stable, it will be removed. Unity 2D is still preinstalled as of now and it will stay as a fallback unity.

  • man, can you share that song?

  • @roloncito links in the description ;)

  • I had to switch back to 10.10 , because Unity is buggy as hell... GNOME 3 is way better, but I'd rather use GNOME 2 , or KDE ...

  • @maw88ify Mate, update to 11.04, log out and select "Gnome Classic Session" on the bottom of the screen, then log back in. Your setting will be saved.

  • @cgofme Thanks , but I get some of the bugs in Gnome Classic Session I already tried that... 11.04 just doesn't work on my computer , and they are removing Gnome Classic Session in 11.10 . I'm dropping Ubuntu and moving to Fedora 15 Linux that comes with Gnome 3...

  • @maw88ify LOL, Gnome Classic Session is what you're using in 10.10 so bugs you see in 11.04 Gnome left over from the previous release. And where did you heard Gnome is going to be eradicated from Ubuntu? It's simply not true, devs deny it. The only change regarding Gnome will be upgrade to 3. Here's Gnome3 without any shell (Unity is a shell) ?v=Kdwpgyc2kiI - looks familiar? And yes, you can load Ubuntu Human theme.

  • @cgofme No classic mode is not in 10.10 it's only in 11.04 , and it is BUGGY as hell so I switch back to 10.10 because 11.04 is shit.

Both Unity , and classic mode are both buggy . None of these bugs showed up until 11.04 so no they have nothing to do with GNOME the have to do with the fact Unity is total shit .

11.10 will no longer have GNOME , and I heard it from "Mark Shuttleworth has revealed that the ‘classic’ Ubuntu desktop will be a thing of the past come the release of 11.10."

  • @maw88ify Okay. Okay. Please relax. The community will catch up with its vision. And good feelings towards you. I've been on Linux nine or ten years, most likely...and it was torture at first. Now my love is indomitable.

  • @cgofme ubuntu unity , and classic mode are buggy

here are some bugs I have in Unity

    watch?v=8g79GDtR3Ts

  • @maw88ify I don't care for Unity. Prior to 11.04 Ubuntu used Gnome with default shell (this is called Gnome Classic Session in Natty but it's the same thing). If there was no Gnome in 11.10 there would be no Unity. Classic Ubuntu desktop may be a thing of the past but can't be removed from Ubuntu because it's default Gnome fall back in case the shell can't work properly with given hardware. What's more, the very same guy said Ubuntu has always been and always will be a Gnome distribution. EOT

  • @cgofme "We made very good progress on a11y in Natty, but will miss the goal of perfect a11y. We'll nail it in Oneiric. That's OK, because we have the Classic desktop fallback in Natty, but will not in Oneiric."

Most probably (this is just an assumption) Unity 2D will be used as the fallback in Ubuntu 11.10.

Just like GNOME 3 has both a 3D, and 2D to fall back on.

  • I hate the Unity Interface. I'm glad they have a Classic GNOME environment for 11.04 If Ubuntu only had Unity, I'd move on to Kubuntu or go back to Win7

  • @theif519 I hear they're dropping support for it, though. Hopefully, it doesnt get uninstall,

  • @theif519 11.04 Unity rocks on my mammoot 18.4 inch 1920x1080 laptop, which is actually a desktop replacement, boo. *downvote*

  • @rinkavideos64 Cool story, bro. *downvote*

  • i love the music!

  • @codfishfan Kazam screen recorder

  • i like your wallpaper. where can i get it?

  • @marinbareta From one of the wallpaper packs on webupd8[.]org search for 'wallpaper pack hd' on the site.

  • @musl1m thanks :)

  • As was said in the video, Unity is around 6 months, but now its around 1 year old. I have not tried Unity yet, but I would say keep an open mind to it's future. Also, people will inevitably find ways to tweak and adjust Unity. Heck, its open-source, what else is it for? ;D

  • I have to test it. BTW nice music ^^

  • I have to test it. BTW nice music ^^

  • How many critical! Wait for Ubuntu bait 11.04 stable and try it ....

  • Fantastic Unity - Fantastic Ubuntu 11.04 !!!

  • Unity is made for small netbooks with 16.9 screens.

  • Genious! nice work

  • i love the music

  • I don't like Unity... It might be great for tablette and touch device but for desktop... the mouse travel time is way too long just to do a simple task.

  • NICELY DONE!

    cheers

  • @Nabo00o I'm not bashing Linux, but I been testing Unity, Gnome shell and KDE since I heard about the switch. It pains me to say it but they all suck, Unity just blows I can't stand it in my netbook . Windows has a much better desktop layout then the above. This from somebody who loves the linux os and gnome. I just feel the top and lower panel of gnome was perfect desktop!!!!!!! Super easy and user friendly. So why fix what's not broken? Unity just isn't user friendly so why bother learning?

  • @Msiletta1 I beg to differ.. as far as I have been using unity on my netbook, I think it really suits it. its faster, easier to navigate and saves a heck of space.. besides, I also believe that Unity and interface like this are the future of computing. Coz in future, most of us are gonna use a lot of gadgets and thus wont it be cool if they will have the same GUI. I mean imagine, ur fone, ur desktop, netbook and tablet will hav the same interface

Even google chrome OS is also a ripoff of Unity:)

  • wonderful music :D

  • @Nabo00o I agree with you. Ideas aren't and shouldn't be copyrightable, but at the same time the "Windows" idea of the desktop is awful. it's a bad idea to copy it just because it's been a success or it's what most people are familiar with.

My point wasn't that Linux desktop developers aren't capable, but that they should think outside of the box a little more. Tiling WMs are a good example of a unique approach to the desktop, and AFAIK, that's an idea that came from Linux.

  • Next generation window manager? Unity and Gnome shell both SUCK!!!! Unity is just god awful it has the Atari 2600 feel to it. While Windows 7 and Mac feel and work like xbox 360 and Ps3. After falling in love with the Linux OS 5 years ago and jumping for joy with Ubuntu One. I find my heart broken by the shit desktop that's coming. Gnome was so easy and simple for multi tasking! I tried 11.04 Unity is just a horrible feel. Sorry Linux your just not ready to be a real desktop back to Windows 7

  • @Msiletta1

I like what they have accomplished with gnome (for the most part...).

I think they are overestimating the number of people who are gonna buy a small laptop to just play stupid movies and games and have no idea of what is going on, or how to change it.

Once I learned Linux/Ubuntu I like the control it gives me.

  • @Msiletta1 Why are you blaming Linux as a whole for what you don't like about Unity and Gnome? There are plenty of other desktop environments.

  • what's the name of the song? lol I really like it.

  • @kotapaka me too!

  • Omg this music makes me wanna play Sims 2^^. Good Vid!

  • Perfect choice of music.

  • I don't get the copying complaints. That's like complaining about how every telephone has it's keys lined in threes. There's just no better way to do it.

  • In the 90s, and early 00s, Linux desktop environments(Gnome+KDE) copied Windows. Now they're copying OSX.

Bring your own ideas to the table, please, it's fine to lean on the good ideas of others, but all you're doing at the moment is making a cheap copy.

  • @rubyhax0r Its the other way around. Windows & Mac been copy Linux.

  • @rubyhax0r

Look dude, Windows copied a lot of stuff from Apple (and the other way around too), but the whole point of information and computers is that you don't have to reinvent the wheel all the time.

Like in coding you base what are making on something that is similar so to spare you from wasting time and effort... Also, it makes sense to have a desktop environment similar enough to something which most others are used to, like windows.

  • no offense to all the people who obviously worked very hard on Unity, but this has zero appeal to me. Some of us hate OSX.

  • Unity looks like an ugly OS X. I love Linux, mac and unix but come on, do you really want to drive your userbase to Linux Mint that badly? Anyone gonna switch once this hits?

  • @ZetaSimsoy beta's dude

  • @ZetaSimsoy I switched. I didn't like unity. It was the default for Ubuntu Netbook for a while, and I had a few other reservations about UB. I liked Maverick, but now I'm using Fedora 14 soon to be Fedora 15 with Gnome 3. We'll see if I like it enough to stick around. So far I'm impressed a lot, though I still have a soft spot in my heart for Ubuntu and Debian.

  • THIS IS A RIP OF OSX!!!! Mark Ubuntu and the linux community is a free one and i for one feel like this defeats the purpose. Global menu in OSX is a pile of crap. If i have a small window down the bottom right hand side of the desktop how does a global menu right up the left hand top corner make and fricken sense? What is wrong with getting rid of panels entirely and using just a dock system, and maybe even using per application menu but maybe hide it with a single button like ff4 and opera 11

  • @imortalsappy I agree that the thing is a waste of space - But then if we don't like it, we don't have to use it.

  • It's possible move the Unity bar on the bottom of the desktop? I really hate the lateral pannel! xD

  • @almostMomo I'm afraid not, they want to keep the Unity Launcher right next to the Ubuntu icon on the top panel.

  • @musl1m Hmm i wait to try out it. Then i will comment ;) Ubuntu is a great thing.

  • Simply perfect!

  • is it just me or does "unity" look a lot like osx?

  • Question: Is there an option allowing you to shuffle between multiple windows of one launcher button just by pressing it repeatedly? Or is there only one choice: to select the thumbnail on the desktop every time you want to get back?

I was infuriated when in Win7 I could only get back to a window by selecting its grouped thumbnail rather than just rapidly pressing the button a few times.

  • @Daghead You click once on the button and it switches to that app and if click a second time it shows all the windows belonging to that app in an exposé style view which allows you to pick window you want to focus on.

  • @musl1m Hmmmm! That is very interesting. Thank you very much for the reply. I'm imagining that it can be hampering to switch between windows of the same app?

  • @Daghead Well I think its kinda better than how its done on other 'Dock' apps on Linux where you have to right click on the application icon to switch windows (the right click also works on unity) because the expose view makes it easier to see which window you want to select. It is done in very similar way to Win7 and OSX to be honest.

  • @musl1m Absolutely. I think Win7 was the first "dock" type taskbar to get it right (despite the devastating lack of an option to shuffle through windows as the group icon is pressed repeatedly). The only thing this approach needs now is a subscript number for each icon to denote and the number of active windows. IMO. That's all :)

  • @Daghead In the latest version of Unity the number of windows running of an application is shown by the number of indicators by its icon in the launcher so if you have two Chrome windows open there will be two indicators by its icon, 3 windows 3 indicators and so on.

  • SWEEET! Can't wait for stable release. Love the music too ;)

  • Looking very Mac OSX like. Which is not a bad thing at all.

  • HOLY FUCK THEY SHUT DOWN LIMEWIRE?!

    :3

  • @thedogmu Yeah... Windows is SO perfect. HA

  • @thedogmu lol sure bud

  • @JohanKH : I'm not muslim, but why judge them all for a few's bad behavior. This person is putting up something great to show.

  • Try using ffmpeg to record screencasts of compositing window managers.

  • Songs remember Donkey Kong themes...

  • It looks like Mac OS X desktop

  • Looks good and clean. Makes the desktop look more enticing to people who don't want to modify anything. Also a bit Windows 7...ish, which is not a bad thing if you're trying to make it more accessible to people not used to Linux.

  • Ya Unity is pointless I could already set Ubuntu up to look better than this using Gnome Shell + Mac Theme + Global Menu + Global Menu + AWN Dock + Compiz ... and it looks 10 times better than this crap. Unity will be the death of Ubuntu... I know lots of people that are dropping Ubuntu and switch to Linux Mint as soon as Unity becomes the default ...

  • Looks like Gnome Shell so I don't really see the reason to duplicate efforts, but we will see what happens to both in 6 months.

    Hong Kong is great...:)

  • @FeelItRising Difference is the compositing, Gnome shell uses the new Gnome 3 compositing, I forgot he name, whereas Unity uses Compiz.

  • @fatkasuvayu yup Gnome Shell will use Mutter (metacity + clutter) and Unity in 11.04 will use Compiz
