The knights of this order were german (the wiki by the way says teutonic forces were mostly estonian). They sacked Pskov and moved to Novgorod. Novgorodians called for Alexander, who defeated the swedes 2 years earlier on Neva river, after which he was called Nevsky.

A suggestion to everyone who likes this. If you own this DVD, and also if you own a CD w/ a modern (newer) recording of this score, what u can do is mute your TV when you play this movie, and simultaneously play that CD on your stereo, so that it sounds much much better. Stalin had banned the movie originally, It was made when the Red tsar made a pact with hitler to divide poland and the clear "anti german" themes in the movie would offended Hitler,a few years later when Hitler ordered the invasion of the USSR in operation Barbarossa this movie was immediately unbanned and released to the Russian public as anti German war propaganda.
Nah mate this is a propaganda film, this was made in the USSR during the rise of the Nazi's in germany, war was looking unavoidable and this film was intended to spread anti german feeling and get the russian population used to the idea of war with germany. This film was banned after the USSR signed a non aggression pact with Germany. After Germany invaded this film was quickly russed out to cinemas again.
No need to get angry at me, I'm not trying to insult you ot this film, in fact I really admire Eisenstein and what he did with this film. But this was intended to spread anti German feelings in the USSR, so it is propaganda.
Everyone knows that the realtions between russia and germany was very strained and war on the horizon. Einsenstein used the real like battle as a backdrop for an anti german propaganda film. I'm not saying thats all this movie is and it was a big stride foward in cinema history but it was commisioned for propaganda purposes.
Hitler made it clear from the beginning that he was going to invade russia and that he despised communism, Stalin made the pact with him to buy time to rebuild the russian army after the purges of the 30s, Stalin knew war was going to happen and wanted the russian people to stand with him by sprading anti german feelings while at the same time stiring patrotic pride.
to quote wikipedia "The film was finished only a few months before Stalin entered into the MolotovRibbentrop Pact, which provided for non-aggression between Germany and the Soviet Union. The film was therefore pulled from distribution within a few weeks of its (highly successful) opening within and outside the Soviet Union, ostensibly indefinitely. But the situation was reversed in 1941 after the German invasion of the Soviet Union, and the film was rapidly returned to Soviet screens."
We could argue over what was going through Stalins head at that time but its beside the point. You can't deny the political subtext it was made in. I mean Early scripts the germans had swastikas on their helmets.
Check out the way the german are portrayed compared to the russians, the germans helmets enclose their whole faces makeing them look menacing and evil, some even have horns! Russians helmets expose their whole face leaving them to look hansome and heroic
And the teutonic helmets were really like this. The horns are historical. Look at the Codex Manesse, 13th Century, you'll find representations of horned Teutonic knights.
But yes, the Germans are evil in this film. Eisenstein wisely decided to take away the swastikas in the Teutonic clothes, but the Bishop still has swastikas in his mithre.
the horns aren´t historical because you can´t compare the codex manesse pictures directly with crusade knights...these simple bucket helmets or just plain helmets without any things on it are historical....but i know which picture in the codex you mean with the horns :-)

Actually this battle is just a rumor, never happend like its shown here. There haven't been more than 400 knights in the German Order at this time. As the rumors reached the orders command no knights were missing, so the Greatmaster sent some knights to the east to investigate the story. At the lake they found a few swords, but no signs for a larger battle. Theres a documentary about this report. So what you see here is propaganda, no one knows who actually fought at this lake.
Excellent mix of old and new soundtracks. The original sound is terrible but some of the crudeness is deliberate. Composer Sergei Prokofiev placed the brass instruments right in front of the microphone so the recording would come out distorted. He said that German battle horns would've sounded unpleasant to Russian ears, and that was the effect he wanted to duplicate. This mix preserves that.
What is somewhat comic and tragic regarding this film's initial release is that it had to be pulled from circulation just a few short months because of the Nazi/Soviet Pact in 1938. I mean, suddenly their Soviet policy had changed to where their supposed enemies were now their friends, and this film was regarded as a blight to Stalin's sudden new attitude towards Hitler's Germany. Only after Stalin had proverbial egg on his face (after the Nazis invaded them in 1941) was did this film return.
This film is history insofar as it was made 70 years ago, and that there is a story behind it. The events depicted in the film cannot be called "history of Russia," or else it would be a documentary. Since the events took place 767 years ago, and this depiction was scripted by Sergei Eisenstein, it is a drama, not history.
The Soviet/Nazi pact was "invented" in 1939, not 2009, so I had nothing to do with it since I am only 47.

I did not say that Alexander Nevsky was invented. You are putting words into my mouth. You are the one who is behaving with paranoia, not me. The battle depicted in this film did indeed happen. I never said that they did not. All I said was that this film itself has a story behind it that is historical. Also, there are portions of the events depicted here that ARE inventions of the director. Eisenstein wrote the script based upon historical events, but it was Eisenstein's creation.
I am a very rational and reasonable person. Thank you for acknowledging that. Whether there was a misunderstanding due to differences in language or cultural thinking, I want to assure you that I do not have any animus towards anyone anywhere. People everywhere share similar hopes and dreams. We share far more elements about our human makeups than anything that truly divides us.
Remember, the film was made in the soviet era, and around world war 2, so it would have the teutonic order, (which composed mainly of germans or prussians in actaul fact.) It would be inaccurate for them. However, Alexander NEvsky did hold off hordes of teutons and therefore is a real hero, however exxaggerated.
What is obviously missing from this narrative is the fact that it wasn't just the Teutons who were fighting against the Russians, but there was a rather large Swedish contingent also. The absence of the Swedes here seems due to the fact that they were of no propagandistic value to the story in the film.
cool film, but the teutonic unis are comically bad. and the heavy cavalry charge could not be more inaccurate (imagine a pack of toyota corollas driving into a crowd of people at 30 mph and you have a more accurate depiction)

Absolutey brilliant. Obivously the structure of the battle has been copied by many subsequent films. Eisenstein was a genius and one can only wish that every director had his talent for doing great things so well.
Nothing ingenious. The "retreat tactics" were used long time before. It was invented by the Samogitians. The essence of the tactics is to pretend that "our army is being defeated", and then simple psychology - the enemy thinks they already almost won the battle, and then they release all their forces on an euphory. And then, of a sudden, they are surrounded unexpectedly by the REAL army of the opponent and slaugtered. An heavy "iron knight" in a forest or swamp in all the mess is helpless...
I love how they used those old soviet tin mop buckets for the Teutonic Knights' helmuts. You can still see those mop buckets being used today in Russia.
Nice this is my favoret scene - it's funny that Eisenstein basically invents the need for a panoramic camera lens - check out how he cuts his scenes together to make what would be a panoramic wide shot by showing the sections one after the other... BRILLIANT despite MAJOR technical limitations. George Lucas is shit.
poland- rech pospolitaya was a great country 300 years ago. I think there was some battles with luck on their side. Beefore Russian qween Ekaterine defeat them and destroy rech pospolitaya.

Some battles with luck, some not, but if MOST battles our elitar units (hussars) were winning against 5-8 times stronger armies... this cannot be just luck.
As for Teutons and Tannenberg (Grunwald), there was olso strong regiment from Smolensk and of course many east Slavs, citizens of "Lithuania". After that battle Teutons never regained thier previous power, it was one of biggest medieval battles.
Lithuanian army was at Moscow under Grand Duke Algirdas. Moscow was surrounded totally, but Lithuanians did not attack it because Moscow town heads managed to negotiate not to destroy the town and they offered to pay tribute for that. Later on Duke Algirdas married a Russian princess...
Lithuanian army in the medieval ages smashed the crusaders many times AND managed to save your asses because it held all the might of the crusaders from the west where they could sweep you at once. Read history, man. Google for battles titles Saule battle, Durbe battle, and GRUNWALD (Zalgiris) battle which was the BIGGEST and one the bloodiest battle in the medieval history where joint Lithuanian-Polish forces crushed to pieces the Teutonic order. And with a much smaller army.

Everyone knows that the realtions between russia and germany was very strained and war on the horizon. Einsenstein used the real like battle as a backdrop for an anti german propaganda film. I'm not saying thats all this movie is and it was a big stride foward in cinema history but it was commisioned for propaganda purposes.

Hitler made it clear from the beginning that he was going to invade russia and that he despised communism, Stalin made the pact with him to buy time to rebuild the russian army after the purges of the 30s, Stalin knew war was going to happen and wanted the russian people to stand with him by sprading anti german feelings while at the same time stiring patrotic pride.

Check out the way the german are portrayed compared to the russians, the germans helmets enclose their whole faces makeing them look menacing and evil, some even have horns! Russians helmets expose their whole face leaving them to look hansome and heroic

Alexander Nevsky wears a half mask in the film.
And the teutonic helmets were really like this. The horns are historical. Look at the Codex Manesse, 13th Century, you'll find representations of horned Teutonic knights.
But yes, the Germans are evil in this film. Eisenstein wisely decided to take away the swastikas in the Teutonic clothes, but the Bishop still has swastikas in his mithre.

the horns aren´t historical because you can´t compare the codex manesse pictures directly with crusade knights...these simple bucket helmets or just plain helmets without any things on it are historical....but i know which picture in the codex you mean with the horns :-)

Actually this battle is just a rumor, never happend like its shown here. There haven't been more than 400 knights in the German Order at this time. As the rumors reached the orders command no knights were missing, so the Greatmaster sent some knights to the east to investigate the story. At the lake they found a few swords, but no signs for a larger battle. Theres a documentary about this report. So what you see here is propaganda, no one knows who actually fought at this lake.

Excellent mix of old and new soundtracks. The original sound is terrible but some of the crudeness is deliberate. Composer Sergei Prokofiev placed the brass instruments right in front of the microphone so the recording would come out distorted. He said that German battle horns would've sounded unpleasant to Russian ears, and that was the effect he wanted to duplicate. This mix preserves that.

What is somewhat comic and tragic regarding this film's initial release is that it had to be pulled from circulation just a few short months because of the Nazi/Soviet Pact in 1938. I mean, suddenly their Soviet policy had changed to where their supposed enemies were now their friends, and this film was regarded as a blight to Stalin's sudden new attitude towards Hitler's Germany. Only after Stalin had proverbial egg on his face (after the Nazis invaded them in 1941) was did this film return.

This film is history insofar as it was made 70 years ago, and that there is a story behind it. The events depicted in the film cannot be called "history of Russia," or else it would be a documentary. Since the events took place 767 years ago, and this depiction was scripted by Sergei Eisenstein, it is a drama, not history.
The Soviet/Nazi pact was "invented" in 1939, not 2009, so I had nothing to do with it since I am only 47.
What I dream has nothing to do with USSR...that is YOUR invention.

I did not say that Alexander Nevsky was invented. You are putting words into my mouth. You are the one who is behaving with paranoia, not me. The battle depicted in this film did indeed happen. I never said that they did not. All I said was that this film itself has a story behind it that is historical. Also, there are portions of the events depicted here that ARE inventions of the director. Eisenstein wrote the script based upon historical events, but it was Eisenstein's creation.

Remember, the film was made in the soviet era, and around world war 2, so it would have the teutonic order, (which composed mainly of germans or prussians in actaul fact.) It would be inaccurate for them. However, Alexander NEvsky did hold off hordes of teutons and therefore is a real hero, however exxaggerated.

What is obviously missing from this narrative is the fact that it wasn't just the Teutons who were fighting against the Russians, but there was a rather large Swedish contingent also. The absence of the Swedes here seems due to the fact that they were of no propagandistic value to the story in the film.

uh actually...well you're wrong AND you're right. The Golden Horde (and later White and Blue Hordes) exacted tribute on Muscovy and Tver. (And I believe Ryazan too). The Mongols didn't conquer "Russia" because there was no "Russia", but they subjugated the "Russian" states for a good 150 years. Even after that, they were a dominant political force that the Rus had to deal with. Like it or not, the history of the Russian state would be very different if if it weren't for Berke and Batu Khan

Absolutey brilliant. Obivously the structure of the battle has been copied by many subsequent films. Eisenstein was a genius and one can only wish that every director had his talent for doing great things so well.

Nothing ingenious. The "retreat tactics" were used long time before. It was invented by the Samogitians. The essence of the tactics is to pretend that "our army is being defeated", and then simple psychology - the enemy thinks they already almost won the battle, and then they release all their forces on an euphory. And then, of a sudden, they are surrounded unexpectedly by the REAL army of the opponent and slaugtered. An heavy "iron knight" in a forest or swamp in all the mess is helpless...

Nice this is my favoret scene - it's funny that Eisenstein basically invents the need for a panoramic camera lens - check out how he cuts his scenes together to make what would be a panoramic wide shot by showing the sections one after the other... BRILLIANT despite MAJOR technical limitations. George Lucas is shit.

poland- rech pospolitaya was a great country 300 years ago. I think there was some battles with luck on their side. Beefore Russian qween Ekaterine defeat them and destroy rech pospolitaya.

Actually this was more political than military victory, but still victory.
Some battles with luck, some not, but if MOST battles our elitar units (hussars) were winning against 5-8 times stronger armies... this cannot be just luck.
As for Teutons and Tannenberg (Grunwald), there was olso strong regiment from Smolensk and of course many east Slavs, citizens of "Lithuania". After that battle Teutons never regained thier previous power, it was one of biggest medieval battles.

Lithuanian army was at Moscow under Grand Duke Algirdas. Moscow was surrounded totally, but Lithuanians did not attack it because Moscow town heads managed to negotiate not to destroy the town and they offered to pay tribute for that. Later on Duke Algirdas married a Russian princess...

Lithuanian army in the medieval ages smashed the crusaders many times AND managed to save your asses because it held all the might of the crusaders from the west where they could sweep you at once. Read history, man. Google for battles titles Saule battle, Durbe battle, and GRUNWALD (Zalgiris) battle which was the BIGGEST and one the bloodiest battle in the medieval history where joint Lithuanian-Polish forces crushed to pieces the Teutonic order. And with a much smaller army.

and Russians should thank Lithuanians and Poles who stopped the Crusaders from the West, and put a wall of defence against Mongols-Tatars from the East (who used to sweep and burn Russian towns before that)...
