  • but i like luigi :(

  • Maybe they should have made this more like Time Bandits? With magical/futuristic pipe(s) leading to various worlds etc.

That would have been an acceptable interpretation.

The dinosaur angle could've stayed, and maybe the fungus thing developed a bit more, with intelligent network of mushrooms that are at the heart of a civilization (though that would probably be too deep and controvercial as it reeks of the entheogen subculture).

  • You know what would be an interesting concept for a decent Mario movie? A movie from one of the Koopaling's perspectives. Fisher Stevens played "Iggy" in the movie and his partner (cousin, whatever) was Spike. A movie from Larry or Lemmy's perspective -- that would be interesting. Except they'd be actual Koopalings, not humyns pretending to be...unKoopas (dino-decended humans are lame). Another interesting thing would a yoshi (other than Yoshi) who sided with the Koopas for political reasons.

  • The dinosaur kingdom is called Dinohattan, I know, it sucks, just like this movie!

  • I actually like this movie a lot. This is likely due to the fact that I never grew up with the games. The people who hate this movie are game fans that complain how unlike the the game(s) the film is. Having never played any of the games except Super Mario World, I proudly admit I don't give a rat's patootie about the inaccuracies. I just enjoy it for the dumb action-comedy movie that it is.

  • 0:40 to 0:44 sounds like Mario was taking a shit.

  • im glad to see im not the only 1 who hates Luigi, especially on that DS game where you have to find 1 certain face withing many other faces, every time i lost on that little game...it was because Luigi's attempt to look like a skinny Mario fooled me...little git lol, nice review loved the "pipe" bit lol

  • Jar Jar = Yoshi

  • the Super Mario Bros. movie would have been good if it was animated so that way it would be more faithful to the games.

  • How can you make a movie about a guy jumping around collecting mushrooms and travelling through pipes? That would be even stupider than this movie.

  • True, but it'd have been good for a laugh.

  • ...I've been saying for years that this (And just about every other Movie based on a Video Game) should've either been animated or not made at all.

I mean, looking AT the actual Super Mario Bros. games, what person in their right mind would ever THINK 'Wow, we should make a live-action version of Super Mario Bros.?'

That kind of borderline retarded and laughably deluded thinking is one (Of many) things that is wrong with this 'movie (If it can even be considered that)...'

  • Good points there. You never know, an animated movie might be made in the future.

  • @Entropy161 You have a point, but what they wound up making isn't all that bad, when taken on its own merits. At least in my opinion. If it had been titled something else and had different character names maybe it wouldn't be so universally reviled.

  • @Entropy161

Just look at the NES SMB manual‘s synopsis or game objective overview, and in throwing away the letter of humorous stereotypes and gameplay, one can sense that Mario could have very well been a children‘s fantasy story book and not a video game. There are many children‘s books with heroes and villains similar to Mario and Luigi, with similar plots of the lesser taking on evil.

Look at the anime made on Mario. Did it involve the letter? No, and a live movie can do the same.

  • @Entropy161

Mario was still a carpender on the synopsis of the console port's manual of Mario Brothers. Why did it matter on his occupation. Everyone says plumber, and suddenly the idea of the movie is of the life of a plumber.

Is it bias? Yes, they turned a nothing ride of random oddity into a film. They didn't add anything that didn't come from the Pirates ride. Even some of the ordering and the curse from the ride is there. They just fleshed it out, that's it.

  • @silenceofthehills ...What exactly are you talking about? There was nothing in my post to indicate that the Mario series couldn't have been a 'fantasy story book,' or any sarcastic remarks about 'the Pirates rides' & whatever 'curse' gibberish. The fact of the matter is that THE MOVIE WAS POORLY DONE, period, in every conceivable way, something you were well aware of before you replied. Yes, I still like the movie for whatever reason, but that doesn't mean it wasn't poorly done.

  • @Entropy161

I think I responded to the wrong person in the line of comments by mistake.

Still, I dissagree with your comment as well. It makes no difference being live action or animated, a VG movie. It doesn't help, especially if CG. If Mario is animated, it will just be a glorified version of the TV show, likely. I'd rather it be more like the Ninja Turtles was for the TV show, with gritty looking animatronics and more an atmosphere coming from the anime.

  • @silenceofthehills ...Yes, I believe you did respond to the wrong person.

However, I stand by my earlier comments, as I spoke from the perspective of 'It's bad enough that someone wants to make a Mario movie, but If they're going to do it...'

Also, the Mario movie was 'gritty (And somewhat cheesy)-looking'' enough, with a preponderance of animatronics that looked nothing like what they were supposed to represent, and we both know how the movie fared both critically and commercially.

  • @Entropy161 It's bad enough? Well, might as well bring up the comment I made to the other guy then...

I don't find it silly as I don't take the letter.

If they can make a live version of a children's fantasy book, then they can of Mario. I don't know why people even see it as of being live action. I don't think they fair badly myself, the puppets and robots, as they aren't any different from other films. The problem is that they changed them, and not made them more detailed/realistic.

  • @silenceofthehills ...You pretty much reiterated what I just said. And if you don't find the movie bad in ANY way, especially/starting with in/its relation to the source material, then you're deluding yourself. There's no other way to say it.

  • @Entropy161

What do you mean, this movie? It is bad. I meant the idea of making Mario into a film in general, which was your statement. This film has that Theodor Rex/those Highlander 2 twins punk vibe to it, or vice versa, and the story has nothing to do with the game.

The game never had Mario stumble on upon a world at all, for instance. It was meant to be about a lesser beating out all the odds, which is a prominant theme in many older fantasy stories.

  • @silenceofthehills What do YOU mean? All you've done on this video page is ramble almost incoherently about everything but 'The Elephant in the Room-' The glaring fact that this movie SUCKS and never should've been made. There's nothing deep, philosophical (Or in relation to any 'curses') about that. It simply is what it is.

  • @Entropy161

I may have given the wrong responce to the wrong person, but your comments have been incoherent to mine as well. I don't even know how to respond to them that they made no sense to what I've stated. They are not ramblings either, they probably just don't go to you're comment. I was only giving the idea to look beyond traditional thought.

For instance, you say the movie never should have been made? No, the movie never should have been made like this, and that's it.

  • @silenceofthehills There was nothing 'incoherent' about me plainly stating that IF a Mario movie was going to be made, it should've been animated. Just admit it-My last comment hurt your feelings, and now you're trying to save face. You're the one who unnecessarily rambled on about 'the curse,' and made tenuous links between the story of the games & fantasy literature, while I kept the topic on, well, the topic. Like I said before, it's as simple as that.

  • @Entropy161

Uh, no. My comment was not to you, however, what you said about it needing to be animated in not scientifically viable. Therefore, my statements ARE cohesive in letting you understand that it makes no sense as to why it needs to be animated. Say that, and your saying that Where the Wild Things Are HAS to be animated in spirit.

    DO YOU FINALLY GET IT...

I didn't talk about a curse also, I was simply talking about the Pirates movie in which everything came from a simple ride.

  • @silenceofthehills 'Uh,' no matter how many times you state that you weren't originally talking to me, the tact remains that: 1) I originally stated that IF a Mario movie just had to be made, it would've made more sense to have it be animated than live-action, and 2)You didn't shut up. In other words, your incoherent rambling was utterly unnecessary.

    DO YOU FINALLY GET IT?

    DO YOU FINALLY GET IT.

  • @Entropy161

I get it what you said all the whole time. If that then, how can my more recent comments be non-cohesive when I know what you mean? Look, it doesn't matter anymore. I sensed your annoyance or anger and I never cared for bickering.

The only angry man here is you, and I can tell.

  • @silenceofthehills ...You obviously don't get what I 'said the whole time,' otherwise, you would've admitted to your mistake and stopped replying to me several comments ago. Also, outside of this video page, you know nothing about me, especially my emotional reaction(s) (If any) to font on a computer screen. In other words, I'm not 'annoyed' or 'angered' by anything you're saying--I just find your incessant attempts to save face rather hilarious and pathetic, something I can readily tell.

  • @silenceofthehills (Continued) The only reason I said the movie should've been animated is because, as we all are aware, there are many things in relation to the Mario series that would've been better conveyed in animated form rather than live-action, something your obvious enjoyment at seeing your own font on the screen can't deny.

    Game Over.

  • @Entropy161

Well, what your saying is opinionated, as there is no difference. I can bring up comics and how people thought its art would never see light as live action. Fantasy = Animation...no. I'm I being incoherent for giving you AN EXAMPLE why its not perfect fact.

Anything else is not going to be in the film anyhow, as its not the story nor important. Still, I never stated that you had to change your opinion.

I'm stopping now, as its now just a bunch of combacks. Wah...boo hoo.

  • @silenceofthehills ...Of course what I'm saying is opinionated, as the point of commenting on Youtube videos is to espouse opinions. You can't possibly be this stupid...But then again, you're sitting here trying to predict how a movie that was made 18 years ago would be if it was animated, while comparing it to some Theme Park ride. Therefore, I stand by what I said about your incoherent rambling, and you're dismissed.

'Wah...boo hoo' indeed, Mr. long-winded, incoherent rubbish.

  • They did it with the Mario cartoons...stayed close to the game canon but brought something new and entertaining. They were probably limited in the live-action film due to the CGI of the time. Imagine a modern movie with a properly done CGI Bowser, he'd make kids shit their pants. :|

  • hey shitcase, i have a small question for you. i want to make movie reviews, but how do i get high quality tv takes of the movie? is it hard? what do i do?

  • I still have that original gameboy version of Mario. It's still great.

  • I just don't GET IT! They SHOULD HAVE brought in Shigeru Miyamato to actually SHOW THEM how to make a possibly good movie adaption of the game, not hire some random couples to be directors who think they know it all! If this were a movie, I would at LEAST put in SOME Super Mario Bros music IN THE MOVIE! And where's the mushroom and Fire Flower! OH NO, NOT IN THIS MOVIE! THEY ARE TOO GOOD FOR THIS MOVIE!

  • Flaw there, Mario Bros movie came out in 1993. You have a picture of the Sonic adventure redesign of Sonic released in the late 90s :P

    Nerd moment =]

Good review guys was entertaining and funny. Do make more.

  • Good review, you gave that film a VERY generous 5/10, but you should have spoken more about the music. The music was bloody awful, terrible stuff,it sounds silly and comical and in no way catchy, more irritating, and what worse is that if you look at the credits youll see that the music score was done by Alan Silvertsri,he did the fantastic scores for Back to the future,Predator,The Abyss, and Forrest Gump.I thought that he could have come up with a much better musical score but no it stinks.

  • I kinda hope the stuff about you hating Luigi is a joke. I personally love Luigi. He's like the underdog, the Usopp of the Mario series. (You have to watch One Piece to understand, stay away from the 4kids dub) Anyway, this review had all the stuff I liked, it bashed a movie that deserved it and it was funny. Great job.

  • Luigi is cool, we don't actually hate the character of him :) Thanks for your comments!

  • you two really kick f*****g a**e with these reviews. great ttime travel effects at the end. you'll have to show me how you got them so flawless.

  • Cool review. I liked how you approached it. Comparing it to the game. Game to film conversions always find it hard. And vice versa. Nice one Lads.
