  • I've saw this guy live a few times years ago and he blew me away every time. Awesome player.

  • I don't like it, maybe in 1920 it would have been a great step forward but nowadays it sounds silly to me.

  • I see a lot of guys try to do a similar thing like this, bending pitches on the drums to make "notes". The thing that separates these guys from Ari is that they seem to do it more as a trick, a "cool drum thing". When Ari does it he actually achieves the note, and knows exactly how to get each pitch out of each drum. What's especially incredible is that he can get the pitch perfectly AGAIN when he refrains the melody, proving he knows where it is. All while swinging hard. What a joy to watch!

  • Now I am an Ari Hoenig fan. Beautifully conceived and played, congratulations!

  • Creative, masterful and inspiring!

  • what drum set is that?

  • @Jazzdrum1210 Pretty sure it's a Yamaha Stage Custom 22", 10" and 14" toms

  • Shit's genius.

  • SIR pls he;p me to help my AMERICAN BROTHERS BY CHECKING OUT MY DRUMMER HEALTH HELP 2PART MOVIE BY SENDING IT TO ALL YOUR DRUMMER CONTACTS AND BY ASKING THEM TO SHARE THE 2 LINKS TO. TO MY DRUMMER HELP MOVIE CALLED "DRUMBEATSTROKE"

  • INCREDIBLE you sir visit that dimmention that Mr BOZZIO OFTENS FLIT IN &OUT THAT BLURS THE DEFINITION OF A DRUMMER,

  • i don't get it, what's so crazy? has no-one tapped their left food whilst playing a timpani piece on a drum kit with a soft stick? is this revolutionary? wow.

  • Some one should introduce him a vibraphone.

  • Comment removed

  • wow he is truly gifted....

  • :Let it Shine!

  • Musicians do strange and often uncomfortable things with their body when they get in their "zone". This trance is often considered a necessity for passionate music playing, and the choice between this and un-sore shoulders bears no question.

  • why drummers couldnot play solo concerts, like pianists.it is because, people are not prepare for that.nobody explain them in schools, but i am percussionist player, and i could listen ari for hours.ari is real genius.

  • refreshing

  • he needs to relax that shoulder, looks tense, he won't like the tendinitis when he is older

  • @mycrowscopic is this guy for real? "relax the should... tendinitis"???? HOW DARE YOU.

  • Drum teachers should show this video to all their students....this is music expressed by drums..Ari Hoenig doesn't play a single note out of its perfect place in the melody he's producing. Absolutely great!!

  • i like it very much

  • Buenas melodias, es super musical es batero

  • Very Cool! ^^

  • Mad

  • I am humbled here Ari's work here redefines what one expects from an incredible solo. it shows that one doesnt necessarily have to hear TIRADE of feet& hand chops a true musician.... METINKZ!

  • WOW

  • wow.

  • he is such a breath of fresh air.

  • is this at the monk institute?

  • he is gonna develop some serious shoulder/back problems

  • lol

  • Now THATS how you are supposed to play music on the drums, this type of great playing is foriegn to guys that only appreciate senseless chops all over the place. I love how Ari is able to play the melody on his toms, he is a complete musician!!!!

  • That´s right. Ari is in the tradition of papa joe jones and max roach, melodic drummers. There aren´t many of these.

  • @JIMFISHES1 yeah , every drummer in thye world should sound exactly like this . thanks ,chairman mao !!

  • looks like he's letting his light shine to m.e. (ba da bing.)

  • People who say that this is a bad way to approach drumming are idiots. The people who say that it's pointless, they're idiots. Melodic (MUSICAL) drumming is what every player should strive for. If you need that explained to you, then you're an idiot.

  • @Mapex101 It would be a bad way to approach drumming in most scenarios. "Melodic" drumming isn't trying to create a literal, toned melody.

The reality is that in most situations, as a drummer, you're going to be taking more care of the rhythm than anything else.

Ari Hoenig has the luxury of being able to do things like this solo, and as a successful band leader - luxuries not all of us can afford throughout most of our careers as musicians.

  • @dannybrickwell you sound like a mediocre turd.."Ari Hoenig has the luxury.." its called developed skill and BALLS to experiment..Ari is human...stop making excuses for yours and all the other lame dick musicians who are hobbyists at best (including myself but I dont delude myself tho HE wouldn't be near as happy doing anything else, where as im fine not being a fulltime player)..

  • @trufiend138 You misunderstand me!

Mr Hoenig is fantastic, I don't mean any disrespect, nor do I meant to be in any way disparaging about the way he plays, nor anyone who tries to do this kind of stuff.

But look, if you get called in to do a session, recording a straight up and down pop tune, then what sort of drumming are you gonna be doing?

There are very, VERY few scenarios that call for this kind of musical exploration, ESPECIALLY if you wanna earn the kinda money you need to make a living

  • ya, i dont know what i said 4months ago, this is good!>...but i dont like his other work!

  • very melodic

  • Pitched instruments are able to serve other purposes besides playing melody and drums are able to serve other purposes than just keeping time, unfortunately there arent a lot of drummers that are willing to play musically the way Ari does in the clip above, Great stuff anyway!!

  • Why paint with blue when green looks just as good?

  • It's blue!

  • you know those moments when your mind explodes, leaving you with a fleeting sense of enlightenment?

this is one of those moments.

  • genius

  • udontexist

  • i really just can't believe this

he just rewrites the definition of drumming

    such an awesome imagination

    i've never thought of

  • He is the best. No question.

  • yes, i love heem

  • I don't tend to think that anyone can truly be the best... but sometimes I feel like it's hard to argue with that

  • saying the best is a pretty bold, general statement....I could see if you wouldve said u think hes one of the best when it comes to playin the drums melodically. Either way you cant say hes the best as long as JoJo Mayer or Benny Greb have a pair of sticks in their hands!

  • gracias carnaza¡¡¡¡¡gran video cabron¡¡¡¡

  • as miles would say. what a motherfucker.

  • great...

  • I never knew it woz possible.

  • Lovin this

  • Great playing. I took a couple of lessons from him. Very nice guy.

  • Man, you sure get inspired from watching great music played like this. Ari is leading the way, and Im positive that many will follow him. Beatiful performance. Regards, Sandemose
