john said he wasnt addicted to heroin until after niandra lades. yea he's high and pot and cocaine maybe but the hardcore heroin didnt come till Smile From The Streets You Hold.
I understand that this music was recorded during the BSSM era. Figuring Hendrix-esque guitar work was a HUGE influence on John during this era, I find it interesting that the great music ideas on this album don't really contain Hendrix-esque licks nor bluesy stuff. Anyone disagree? Agree? Any input?
@chrisrave I'm no music expert, but my opinion is that you can hear the Hendrix influence here. John's guitar playing is almost always melodic instead of chordal. That's one of the things that Hendrix was known for.
@chrisrave It's kind of hard to explain, it does but it doesn't. Or rather, it does in the same way Hendrix's music resembled traditional blues. I play a lot of Hendrix and a lot of Niandra, and if you play them, you can see the melodic and chordal similarities. It's just there's a different emotional emphasis, and a few outside notes that kinda come out of left field that make it sound really different. The intro to this song in particular is very Voodoo Chile when you play it.
@chrisrave But that said, Niandra Lades is just super-original and different sounding, and it's hard to find any influence (in terms of sound) that Frusciante is actively trying to mimic anywhere on the album. It's just too much its own thing. Seriously who the fuck would write Untitled 12? Genius stuff though.
Im so glad I can look on youtube and find 130 likes on one of my favorite songs, from one of my favorite albums. So pure, every one who says this is bad doesn't understand music. Just such a great track.
Seriously if I ever become a famous rock star, I'm going to mention this album in every interview. Work it into the collective unconscious of society, build it up long term, you know?
FUCK IT BETTER IDEA. If I ever become become president, Your Pussy's Glued To A Building On Fire will be my victory song.
Screw the critics, someday this will be recognized as a work of genius. Fucking inspirational.
Because you see, life is a yoke and we are all oxen. In this outdated agricultural metaphor we labor ourselves to death under the burning sun to sow the seeds of civilization that our grandsons might have silver drops of starlight stylishly engraved on their bigger, better yoke.
"And this album has that vibe and I think it's something that can really make a difference in somebody's life in this world. It can make them feel like they have a place in the world or not have a place."(John Frusciante)
This album goes beyond describing. Either you love it or you cant handle it. In my opinion this isnt just John's best album but my all time favorite album. A big F-U to all bandwagon frusciante fans that always complain over dread his drug days, this is the purest form of music Ive ever heard
Listening to his music back from these days, to me, is kinda like walking through a pitch-black tunnel and you have no idea where it goes
You can't see or hear anything, you can't touch anything, and you are almost disconnected from the world your use to. Theres a haunting feel to it and at the exact same time a deep minded feel. Like a euphoric other-world I can't leave and John's music is my guide. I almost don't wanna walk through this tunnel, but as long as John is with me, I'm not afraid
Haha, I have to admit something. I was always kinda afraid of listening to this album, seeing as John was heading towards a life-threatening addiction around this time. I sometimes refer to it as his "dark years".
Its like this album is the most scariest thing ever because it shows just how real shit can get, but at the same exact time it is the same reason why I think it is probably thee most beautiful work of musical art/poetry ever.
frusciante always talks about being in the 4th dimension , i feel its a cosmic unconscious discovery were time and space doesnt exist , only vibration and emotion.
@Seagerash Thats bad... the recording and everything about this album is what created the intense and strong vibe it has to it. This song was most likley recorded in johns room in the mansion they stayed at during the bssm recording. its done on a simple 4 track and its what adds to the extrordinary artistic expression this album has... sorry for sounding like abit of an asshole but its true.
althought the lyrics are quite odd i shows art dont have to make sense to be beatiful and besides this sound like out of some bizarre beatiful extrange universe .
@psychopomp88 frusciante loves duchamp, and duchamp invented the charcter of rrose selavy (duchamp himself dressed as a woman), i think the cover of this album is a sort of "quotation" from marcel
@dandansade I feel the same way. This is obviously the most beautiful album i've ever heard in my life. Its perfection. I feel bad for allll the people who dont "understand" it.
I am a insane hip-hop head but this is insane fuck wait up Im going to stop calling myself a hip-hop head and call it a MUSIC Junkie that sounds so much better........Ya Music Junkie......Way better but all of Chili peppers shit is good
To find good music these days, you have to be prepared to look. Good music is no longer an effortless discovery. A person can't be lazy if they want to hear beauty in a true sense, it's something that needs chasing and searching, but that really can make it more rewarding when you find something of this caliber. People forget that music can still be pure and is still pure, but it needs to be uncovered. Or, you could just make it yourself.
@Pastafield that is what i do. i am really sad how the minds of some young people are overly dominated by the pointless repetitive lyrics of mainstream pop and rnb songs.
@Pastafield you are right looking for real and different music is always a quest because most of the things we hear in radio are not the best are just the one that sell more alot of artist are overlook because dont fit in the labels of music industry, looking for beatiful music is the best anyone can do instead of just accepting what radio put in front of us.
It's from John's movie he made with his friend, before he recorded the album. He played a girl named Niandra and his own personality at once. You can see the female character on the CD's cover. I read that in "Kalifornizacja" by Bartek Koziczyński, but I don't remember all facts.. it was 4 years ago. The movie has never released.
The title for the album was taken from an experimental movie and Niandra LaDes is the main (male!) character looked up to famous dadaist, Marcel Duchamp. John also played his alter ego - a woman - Rose C'est La Vie, and the "woman" on the cover is she.
So.. I'm sorry I wildered you all a little bit in my previous comment. As I said I didn't remember all facts, but this is what I read just before. Hope it's helpful for you.
Btw, take a look at Rrose Sélavy (vel Marcel Duchamp), it looks like John wanted to imitate him on every way.
That's funny how deep story have this album, and how it's making me more interested in it, as opposed to the rest of his solo work (except Smile.. and TROWFTD). I want to say that this album has not begin in a studio, like most, but far back in the past, before all ideas appeared together in one place..
ya i feel that everyone who enjoys this album has a special connection with their emotions that no other person can reach because they listen to pop shit. john frusciante is one of the few if only person who can take u to another place with his music. im glad other ppl appreciate this album too
no other music i have ever heard has had the same effect on me that this stuff has. to me it is the purest expression of a person. i sometimes have goosebumps in a song when a really profound part hits, but i get them throughout the whole of this album. a lot of my friends can't understand...
@Judojam fuck.... i thought it was just me. bro(or sis), i could not have put it better myself. i was 19 when this came out, in a band, in love for the first time,..........................i gotta go b4 i collapse.........
The cover represents John Frusciante Himself desguised in Marcel Duchamp's Rrose Sélavy (A french character: sélavy= C'est la vie = That's life) whom Frusciante was a fan of.
