I have relatives who told me of all the damage that was done by Hugo in Kannapolis. By the news back then you would have thought it only went through Charlotte.
20 plus yrs since that day I was 6yrs old then man that night was like somethn from a movie even the time before nite fall felt odd to me clearly this is something Ill never get over or forget Even more so everybody who was hit by this storm still have scars from it today (Landscape wise) every since then every hurricane season I pay attention to the path each one takes and if one ever follow the same exact path hugo took.... well you know the rest to that statement.
This was a night of terror....... my two young children, myself and husband sit quitely on our stair case and prayed, while the winds shook our house for almost 30mins, I almost went into early labor with my third child....the aftermath in Charlotte NC was better to deal with than going through the storm....praise God for his mercy and grace....I pray for those in Joplin, God they need your help!
i was living in isle of palms, SC during hugo. we all got evacuated the day before it hit. the eye of the storm completely covered our island at one point. i went and stayed with family in scotts store, NC. We couldn't believe what we saw when we came back home......very helpless feeling at the time.
I don't know what was more shocking for me, seeing the devastation in Charleston or the complete shock of seeing tress down on top of cars in Charlotte. i think that one shocked me the most. I live in Wilmington and it makes me very thankful at how we were spared and saddened to see what the folks in Charleston and Charlotte went through.
Wow I can't believe it been 21 years ago now god I was 11 years old I remember my mom and my late foster telling the how they stayed up all night making sure are house didn't fall down and I sleep through hugo I was deep sleeper and I woke I was shocked seen one are huge tree uprooted in are back yard just my room and late grandmother room we were both and now hurricane earl coming in still scare us n.c. people. We always remember every hurricane comes in
i lived in lancaster sc,our mobile home fell off the blocks.we left and drove to grannys house driving through the storm.i remember my dad was calm cool and collected.thank you lord for sparing our lives
@TWCmusicweatherfan61 I live in Wilmington. The schools here if I remember correctly were dismissed at regular time on Thursday and were canceled on Friday. We were very fortunate here. I was one of the fortunate that didn't lose power.
I was stunned to wake up and see the sun out shining very bright to turn on the the tv and not only see the devastation in Charleston but what was more shocking was the footage of trees on top of cars in Charlotte. It was very shocking.
I was 7 when it hit after that i know every wether system out thier. I have the old vcr tape of the hugo video scrap book.... I hope that people watch this it was the strongest storm ever befor hurricane andrew. The only storm to hold it's composure within miles inland was hurricane Hugo that was a strong storm through the mountains of nc, virg,tn, and canada!!! Beat that Hurricane Katrina!!!! I FEEL SORRY FOR THOSE PEOPLE!!!!!
Well I've got 13 ten minute segments of it, I've ofter wondered how much was missing. I'm sure some others would like to see the last segments if you could upload...
Not sure about the music, I guess they had a band that did all their music, sounds familiar for that era.
I remember waking up at 1am in Kannapolis, I lived a block from the train tracks and it sounded like a train was moving outside the window. Our house wasn't damaged, but all of the water oak trees we had were stripped clean of limbs and our block had a tree in the road every 5 feet. I was 13.

We lived in Charlotte and experienced Hugo. Incredible how Hugo was still so strong that far inland.
