The do gooders naivley assume that getting "an education" will make you more prepared for life. Spending $100K to get an arts degree that will earn you $40K annually is not a smart trade off. Especially, if you end up (like most arts majors) working for the govt or in a coffe shop. Schiff is right, people need to learn skills - not simply jump through academic hoops so that they can put a plaque on the wall.

in the past, a degree actually meant something. Sure people had to work and save in order to afford to go to college, however that made that degree all the more important to get, besides the price of college was affordable before student loans came about.

Now that everyone has a degree, only degrees from good colleges are worth anything, and if you dont get in a good college, your degree is worthless, all you are left with is no job prospects and a huge debt and a whole lot of time wasted.
