  • Thanks for the driving tour,I used to have penfriends in both Poznan and Lodz,so this was fun.The weather this year sounds like normal beastly American summers...they generally stretch from April to October with those temps too! Horrid stuff.Cheers!

  • @teufelstaub This year the weather was very odd. Everywhere is forecasting a tough winter - not for me though - I am clearing off somewhere else until it is warm again!!!

  • @alanheath Having watched several Polish films (i.e. Zemsta,Ogniem i Mieczem),I can imagine the winters there are frosty indeed. The Poles do seem to have so many lovely holiday traditions that might warm the season a trifle!(I'm a Chicagoan,so hearty weather isn't too scary...cheers on your travels!

  • @teufelstaub I bet it is just as cold where you live! My ex was in Ogniem i Mieczem - she played the part of Horpynia's voice (just the voice - not the acting!!)

  • @alanheath How cool is that? I honestly preferred Horpyna to Helena;she never simpered! I came away from that film with a long list of favourites, and loved Andrzej Seweryn,Bohdan Stupka,Aleksandr Domogarov,Wiktor Zborowski,Zbigniew Zamachowski and Macziej ? who played "Crooked Nose" of the Cossacks. No doubt you've seen tons of Polish cinema, and truly enjoyed it because of your fluency with the language!OiM is the best ever, and Szabla od Komendanta is a howl!Great country and terrific folks!

  • @teufelstaub I have not actually seen that much cinema from Poland or anywhere else for that matter outside English language films. When I was a student in Paris, a professor asked me if I had been to the cinema much. Oh yes, I said, I saw James Bond, Missing in Action, Swarzenegger...

  • @alanheath Oh,you'd love so much of it,given your facility with the language.Szabla od Komendanta is a darling film about an older gent who is ready to die, because he's missing his deceased wife.He must, however, pass along his sabre to his son,who shows no interest in the military or marriage.Lots of antics ensue,as his cronies try to prepare him for the inevitable.I personally feel Poles have the best cinema outside the UK.Cheers!

  • @teufelstaub I have not actually heard of that film although the plot sounds like something which no doubt happens quite often. I have in the last five minutes obtained a copy of Samotność w Sieci which has been highly recommended - even from a friend in southern Russia.

Outside of the English speaking world - I am a bit pushed to say which country produces the best films for me. Germany has however produced two of the best war films - Stalingrad and Downfall.
