He was however the fourth monarch belonging to the Scottish house of Stuart (the other three being James I and VI, Charles ! and Charles II). William was succeeded by James' younger daughter, Anne, the sixth and final Stuart monarch.

@hektorpike For your information, James II and VII was not "Scottish". He was born in St. James Palace which is in London. London is in England. He was however the fourth monarch belonging to the Scottish house of Stuart (the other three being James I and VI, Charles ! and Charles II). Further, when James was deposed, William reigned alongside James' daughter, Mary, who became the fifth Stuart monarch. William was succeeded by James' younger daughter, Anne, the sixth and final Stuart monarch.

@hektorpike Respectfully, I think you need to study a reputable book instead of what you've learnt from the television and Irish Republican websites. The original IRA (who, as you correctly say, were a completely different entity from PIRA) were on the verge of defeat in 1920/1 and it was precisely because they feared a repeat of the South African experience in the Boer War that they agreed to the treaty which partitioned Ireland and left the Free State as a monarchy within the Empire.

I would disagree that Irish Republicans only "wanted to be free" and would point out that their ideology was one of ethno-religious tribalism deriving from c19th Romanticism.
This is borne out by the demographics - the non-Catholic population of the Free State declined 70% between 1920-90 as a consequence of ethnic/religious cleansing and discrimination.
