The original was in Czech, and Janacek's melodic style is notoriously tied to the patterns of the Czech language - an effect he deliberately cultivated early in his career. One one hand I'm sympathetic to BBC's intention (I presume) to make this accessible to a wide audience (and children in particular), but then on the other hand I feel it really loses much of its vitality this way.
@luciferlocke Might we not overdo the 'authentic Czech at any price' approach? Janacek seemed to approve his friend Max Brod's German version of the opera, after all. Would British youngsters watching a long, subtitled Czech opera both understand and remain enthralled, and would Janacek really have approved of his 'melodic curves of speech' theories reducing access to his works by non-Czechs (assuming a sympathetic translation, obviously)?
I thought that this was supposed to be one of the few English operas in existence. Janacek wrote it in English so it's proper for this to be in English.
What's all this about "one of the few opera in English in existence"?? There are hundreds, probably thousands, of English-language operas. Ever heard of Benjamin Britten, for goodness sake?
Revenge ! Let's record Britten and Purcell in Swedish

It may be in english, but even I as an english speaker cannot understand it, XD I'd prefer it in czech even though I don't know that language.

Unfortunately few people know that the opera is based off of a book. Janacek got famous off the genius of Tesnolidek.

Not a book, Rudolf Tesnohlidek's original Liska Bystrouska was published as a newspaper comic strip.
Janacek's opera was the first, and possibly only opera based on a comic strip.

He says "You had better do as you're told! Don't be disobedient! Anything for a quiet life..."
I remember original footage of when Matt Baker recorded his voice for the dog. :)

Okay I looked it up, apparently it can be in both languages. I had an opera collection that described why it is in English but I lent it out.
