Not to mention translating is not easy, especially HK comedies since they tend to use a lot of puns. Heck I bet if a Mandarin speaker who doesn't know any Cantonese watched it, they won't get what's so funny about it even if there are Chinese subtitles! And that is not even a translation problem. I remember watching Korean drama with English subs. They must have done a direct translation because I didn't really get the joke...or the cultural references.
