This is a lovely video, alavaini, and I would love the opportunity to do this myself one day. However, I've just read on Wikipedia about how Indian elephants are domesticated by their mahouts. It's known as phajaan: calves are taken from their mothers at a very young age, are locked into a tiny space and beaten and tortured by villagers until they submit entirely to human orders. Did the elephants in this clip have to go through this? It seems dreadfully cruel. How can it be justified?
MrsBundlebery, Thanks for seeing the video and sending this response. Unfortunately, I do not know how these particular elephants are treated. Yes, I would think that all practices have a good part and a not-so-good or even really bad part. In fact, it may happen and people don't talk of it. I am not 100% in favor of this, as I also disagree with the concept of a zoo....it's really a hard call though.

Are you fed up with the sad state of affairs in Kerala? Are you angry that for the past 50 years two parties have raped and fucked up Kerala? Do you feel cheated and left out? Don't you think you are also an important stakeholder in giving ideas and suggestions for development of Kerala? But nobody cares or listens to you? Are you fed up with selfish politicians fighting against each other? Does your heart cry for change in Kerala? Don't you want to give a good future to your kids?

Brilliant - has anyone read a book on " How to train an Elephant ;)" I am sure India beats any "Sit Stay Fetch" culture.
