i think the most spectacular thing here is not how the horse understands the body signals of the rider, but why it is happily doing so. every horse recognises small movements or signals. but to gain and keep the mental power as a rider, this is not usual. its the hardest part, nobody would ever learn watchin horse training videos. its a work on yourself you have to do. luckily, some gentle horses can help you though, if you keep on and listen.
There really is an amazing feeling with having such a great connection with a horse, where the horse really just becomes like an extension of your legs (when riding), and you work together as one. I experienced that with my recently passed percheron who was also my first horse. She was an amazing and beautiful animal who thought me a lot about communicating with horses. More people can do this. It might come more natural for those who are kind & kinestetic learners, but its possible for everyone
It is truly a sensation to watch him ride, even if oly in a video. but if one person can do it, why can't the rest of us? One day I dream of being able to ride like that :)
He is an inspiring trainer. I read his book years ago and loved it. It is such a treat to be able to see him on video. I have ridden many miles with loose horses in a herd and the feeling is primordial! I always rode one that was saddled and bridled, though. I see he carries a rope, that he can use as a correction. Once you get the horse well trained, all you need is a slight reminder, like the rope in his hand.
@hickchick9 yes. Look...when you are riding like this, and having this connection with your horse, you trust at your horse and the horse trusts you, and it's possible because of this. But when you put a helmet on, it means that you don't trust at your horse, cause you thing "omg, maybe he is scared, and he will try to through me down...etc" but if you think that, theres no trust, and so you can't ride like this...:) do you understand?
@artOfSamira yes trust is important but you won't be able to ride much if you have brain damage. Accidents can happen whether you trust your horse or not. Whether the horse trusts you or not.
@bayimpulse We take this risk every time we ride, float, or work with our Horses. It's the trust in myself and my horses that gives me the courage to undertake all of the above. I trust that my horses would not deliberately hurt me and even in an accident they would be mindful of me and look to me for help.
@artOfSamira But maybe you arent thinking that as much as you are thinking "what is I screw up and fall off." The person is not necessarily thinking that they dont trust the horse, just more as they dont trust themselves to have the balance or strength to stay on. They could trust the horse with their life 6-fold, but you can never trust yourself.
@artOfSamira: I disagree on the trust issue. When we ride, we travel faster than our bodies are designed for, and since no rider is immune to the laws of physics, there is always a potential risk of injury. Wearing a helmet is therefor a question of safety - not of trust. Wearing a seatbelt is the same: Even though you trust the driver (e.g. yourself) completely, you still wear it - if you're smart...

Two free beings in beautiful harmony. You can see how calm and happy the horse is all the time.
