Charles Finney invented the shinanigans Washer talks about around 2-3 minutes. He believed salvation consisted of a man reforming himself and that one could "stop sinning," so he was trying to emotionally stir people to choose to begin living a "perfectly moral" life. He considered the idea of the antonement absurd, disbelieved in original sin, and believed man had to save himself though "holy living." He is the father of many heresies, perhaps even the idea one must be a "good person."
