oh aye they still do it. When i was operation Herrick 10 i saw a herculese drop about 65 paras from only 800 feet. Its a rapid responce. But they dont do it often.

i joined the paras when i left school at 16. i got into trouble and had a fight with fellow soldiers while out on the piss. i just left cause no one liked me because i was a stupid chav asshole. but i loved the military and decided something harder. so joined the royal marines at 20.

The UK supporting protestants are only a majority in the North (6 counties out of 32.) About half a million out of the total Irish population of 4 million plus. Think North and South Korea, different countries and armies. So it is inaccurate and misleading to say there is an "Irish" regiment in the British army. Britain should clarify this in the interests of the peace process. The old colony of Ireland is long gone (since 1921).

It is not about religion. It is about rights. The historical problem is that Britain seized the North of Ireland and settled it with protestants. They then discriminated against the local population. That doesn't happen any more. Today in the North, you can hold a British or Irish passport - whatever you want. Protestants in the rest of Ireland have equal rights and there are no issues.

The British army handed back Dublin Castle to Irish war of independence leader Michael Collins on Jan 16th 1922. Commonwealth membership after that was a voluntary association quite different from being ruled by Britain. If some still choose to join the British army is a very old and dying tradition. I'm sure there are a few British born serving with us too.

The Irish army did not fight in Iraq. Ireland is a neutral country. The so-called "Irish' regiment in the British army, is made up of Northern Irish protestants - a small minority - who still support the union with Britain. They have nothing to do with the Irish army, which has been a separate nation and separate army since 1921. Google it if in doubt.

Imagine if you were walking down the road and some person shot your best friend from a car and drove off and they wouldnt fight you outright and you had to live with that guilt for the rest of your life. Best to call them Northern Irish to avoid confusion. Ireland itself is a separate nation - separate army. Before Ireland became independent (1921), many Irish (catholic and protestant) joined the British army and fought in World War 1.Today, Irish citizens can not join a foreign army. Most Irish people have nothing against the English and would like to see a peaceful North with power sharing, and the right to have any citizenship they want (as the peace agreement allows).
