Great video, great cuts, great music. We iceboat on Buckeye lake, OH but it is usually my 2 DNs, a rat boat DN and an Arrow. I think we are the farthest south iceboating lake in Ohio. Our mud puddle is very shallow and they let it down in the winter so it freezes fast but ugly. Have you put a GPS on the boat for top speed runs? I got a 44.7mph on my new boat but the front runner wasn't true. Try a DeLorme it will print a track of your run with max, average, duration ,location, etc.

I would say this is physicly impossible because of the wind being the driving force.

No, he's right. Many sailboats go faster than the wind, even on water. They aren't just blown by the wind, they act like an aircraft wing. It intakes wind from the front and exausts it from the back + you get motion. The bigger the sail, the stronger the wind or the faster the sail travels the stronger the force. Just wiki it if you want to know the basic physics.

any idea how that works? if Im pushing your car 10 mph,how does your car go faster than 10 mph? if your sail boat went faster than the wind wouldnt the sail be pushing the air?

it's because of the profile of the sail, it has the profile of a wing. And because of this, there is a low pressure on one side, and a high one on the other side, pushing the sail to the low pressure, and moving the boat..

I kinda understand what makes the boat move,its just when your going faster than the thing thats pushing you.I believe it I just dont understand it.if the wind is blowing 10mph and your going 20 mph,your pushing the wind?

If the wind is coming in your back you wont go any faster than the wind but the trick is to go almost right into the wind but not completely. the wind should fall diagonally in the sail so you get the wing effect. It works great if you have good blades and lots of wind. I've done this myself last week because there was ice here (YEEH) in the Netherland. It's such a rush :D

Many people struggle with this concept. The perception is easily altered when you realize that we are not 'pushed by the wind' The vertical wing (sail/mast combo) creates a high & low pressure differential with the wing in between. We are getting 'sucked' to the low pressure created. The only limiting factor is parasitic drag from the non-lift producing components of the boat and the drag of the runners which is minimal if they are properly tuned.

simple answer, if the wind is coming from behind, the boat won't go faster than the wind.

but if you are going against it (upwind) or along it (reaching), the fact that its moving through the air means that it creates its own wind, which will add onto the wind already there, making it go faster :).

When going downwind, the wind that it creates is opposite to the wind already there.

As a sailor, this is also why the wind seems calmer going downwind than upwind.

not really, because when you are going downwind, you pick up speed and your apparent wind angle moves forward it makes it seem like you are on a reach and you can therefore acceed the speed of the wind. ocean racing boats like the volvo 70s do this all the time

I just got back from Crivitz, WI. They had about 4 in of black ice, no snow, and 20mph wind. Some of the best iceboating ive done. Watching this video just makes me wanna go out for some more!
