One possible explanation is fresh water from a nearby river that may have killed the herring school, or that they were driven too far up on the shore by predatory fish and got trapped as the tide did what it usually do.
Besides, zillions of seagulls, sea eagles, crows, ravens, seals, minks, otters, cats, free meal on the beach.
This way it's not so miraculous the fish dissappeared quickly...

well, I hate to explain it, but every 12 or so hours the tide comes in and could easily bring the left over fish that the seagulls didn't eat back out to sea.

I throw the dead fish up to them and they catch it and fly off. done it many times.

They they put out a poison called DRC-1339 and allowed thousands of birds to feed on that poison.They even proudly publish an online spreadsheet showing just how many they’ve murdered with poison. The USDA has been killing off species for several years now. Called ByeBye Blackbird project. They they put out a poison called DRC-1339 and allowed thousands of birds to feed on that poison.They even proudly publish an online spreadsheet showing just how many they’ve murdered with poison. The USDA poisons birds because certain groups become too populous, what do you suppose is planned for when human population grows too large?

There are billions of blackbirds and they create a lot of problems. a few weeks back just in my trees alone there were thousands and they were crapping all over everything. Fish gas up and float sometimes.. After the gas dissipates due to the decreased pressure of being on the ocean surface and due to some chemical reactions, they sink. Sometimes, they never float but just sink to the bottom. The scary part is that massive fish die offs could be going on all the time, like in Revs, but we wouldn't even know since they could be sinkers.
