those throw out reserves seem to work pretty damn good, think i'll stick to skydiving. that one had some hesitation, i was thinking awe shit, come on inflate.
He's lucky his wing didn't completely gift wrap him. At least he had a chance to throw his laundry although that reserve was mighty slow opening. At least he's sure to repack more often now which reminds me...and flair!
this should teach you to repack your reserve more often... swiss paraglider association shv proposes a 4-6 months interval, then it should open in 1-2 seconds. and not in 13 as we see it here. with 100m above ground, he could be dead because of the long opening time! and then his headover position...
I love the way the music changes as soon as his reserve inflates. Quite the learning curve in Paragliding. Broke the tow line once about 60 ft off the ground. No SIV for that. Either catch the surge or kiss the planet. Not a great flair but one hell of a roll ;)
Been there...done that. I kissed the planet from about 80' off the line. Decided to trust the rubber bum. Took a great gouge out of Terra Firma, but got away with a sore bum for two weeks! Boing!
He was doing an SIV, and just did not catch a forward surge, loads of energy in the wing, dived unexpectedly and there you go... I have to admit, the video does not show well the energy build up - it really came by surprise I bet...
From what I've heard, he threw it into the wind (down, not up), and maybe the wing still produced enough drag to slow his fall somewhat... but it's been repacked several times since then :-)
Paragliding "Pilot" not a "jumper" although from this clip I can see how you'd get confused. That reserve deployment left much to be desired. That was slow even by sky Diving standards. It's suppose to come out of the bag, snap open fully on deployment to provide "Low Saves". This one didn't.

That was a pathetic throw. He needs to eat his Wheaties or put some adrenaline behind his toss.

what a slow reserve. what if he was 200 m from the ground, the reserve would be useless

That big-ass reserve opened slow as hell! Check out the Metamorfosi Conar -- opens in 3 seconds.

Hmmm. do you think he had a little too much brake pressure? watch how quick the wing spins just before he belly flops into his wing.

I was trying to get some King Edwards in!!! Seriously, it's an interesting view, the ground 30' in front of your face.
Fine at altitude, but damned scary at T.O.
Ah well, live to fight...
Mail me if you want the full SP.
