@187967 It's supposed to be. In the story that goes along with the songs, Mehisopheles wanted to take Beethoveen's last symphony by saying he would trade Beetoven's soul (which he apparently possesses) for it. Beethoven knew what his music might do for the world and when he refused, Mephisotoples retaliates by threatening to tortue a random homeless little girl for the rest of her life. This song is all those threats.
The singer is Mephistopheles/Satan bargaining with Beethoven for his final symphony. Basically he's saying if he doesn't give him the music, he will make this little girl's life on his porch a living hell. Beethoven begrudgingly accepts.
@nibblesfan I've made that comparison before, too! XD When I first stumbled across TSO (specifically, this album), I was also in a huge Phantom of the Opera and Nightmare Before Christmas phase, and to me, his voice sounded like a cross between Jack Skellington and some of the snarlier bits of Gerard Butler's singing. Basically, I was head-over-heels for his voice in about half a second. XD
@myoneandonly89 GASP!!!!!!!!!! YOU MUST BE MY LONG LOST TWIN!!!!!!!!!!!! I am totally obsessed with Phantom of the Opera and that's exactly what I thought!!!!!!!! And yes I know exactly how you feel about his voice!!!!!!! XD (we even use the same smiley!!! XD)
This is my theme song.... I'm not even joking. A friend of mine created a character based off of me to put in her story after we listened to this song... This IS my theme song. 8)
I am in love with Jon Oliva's voice. He has the ability to sound heart-achingly sweet, chillingly guttural, and, as clearly demonstrated here, delightfully maniacal.
It's sort of a twisted form of beautiful, this song. You can feel the emotions: all the rage and malice and pain. This song is evil yet in a good way...if that makes sense. All I really know is that I've been pressing replay for the past hour! And I still can't get enough! ^.^
@GlorifyTheRisenSon XD That's a funny thought, if you haven't heard anything else by this singer. His name is Jon Oliva and he's got a pretty incredible range of singing! Try listening to "Believe" by Savatage, his voice is incredibly sweet in that song.
That growl, though! Hee! Manages to make the hair on my neck stand on end.
Funny thing is i met Jon Oliva in a bar after a show and despite him selling the evil voice so well, he's the friendliest goof ball you could ever meet.
You know, I feel like I want to help the girl in the song more and more each time I listen to it, to the point where I'm absolutely fed up with the narrator. I want to strangle him or somthing. That's how you can tell if it's a good song, and this one definately passed.
such a dark, morbid song but still great just like the entire album my favorite TSO album so far yeah the christmas music is good too but nothing compares to a beethoven concept album
To tell you the Truth I think it Reminds me of JACK THE RIPPER it sounds like something he would do, cause he killed prostitutes mainly females! ANYONE ELSE AGREE?

Great ... the intensity in this song is great and the way the piano just sort of rises and falls like nothing he ever does will change is just brilliant the lyrics is so sadist its almost the worst ( which means best in this situation) of shoden fruede
Exactly! It sounds like he's talking about Harleen Quinzell as well. Metaphorically or literally either way it could be about the poor blonde psychiatrist.
mephistopheles, which is who the singer of this song is acting as, is often portrayed as the devil in films and songs. what mephistopheles really is a demon. unlike most demons who try to corrupt every human they come across mephistopheles only talked to certain humans. humans who were said to already be damned or on their way to damnation.

@SasorisPuppet thats right. the devil informes beethovhan that the devil owns this girls soul. now in exchange for the 10th symphony, he will let this childs soul go. let her live a happy long life. the album is beethovhan's last night. a masterpiece of a rock opera.
the laughter wasnt from people passing her by that didnt help, though people did do that if they could see her which im not sure they could. she was mephistopheles slave i suppose. he had her soul and was planning on torturing her if beethoven didnt give him the 10th symphony
Is this the devil?
