Gets funnier every time I see it. Top American family values: Abuse, neglect, hostility, infidelity, alcoholism, fighting, undermining each other, uncontrollable rages, financial irresponsibility, blame, resentment, ignorance, sabotage, lies, apathy, religious paranoia, guilt, shame, self-loathing...... Yeah, as a nation we really need to "get back to traditional family values".
Our stories describe the lives of the boys and men for thousands of years: boys who were beaten by their fathers, whose capacity for love and trust was crippled almost at birth, men whose best hope for connection with other human beings lay in detachment, as if life were over. It's how we keep from destroying in turn our own children and terrorizing the women who have the misfortune to love us; how we absent ourselves from the tradition of male violence how we decline the seduction of revenge.
Conflicted, afflicted, and tortured son of alcoholic abusive father, visits same on own family. Son hounds murder suspect to his own destructive end, but don't worry; it has a happy ending! After driving away everyone he loves with brutality and paranoia, son and father finally get some much needed one-on-one time. Father celebrates son's rage with whisky bottle to head. Son responds with rifle butt, arson & flight. Disney has outdone themselves again!
There are very few movies in existence that really nail the howling rage men experience in times of hardship, and the subsequent punishment and social ostracization the same men endure if they dare to cut loose for even a fraction of a second.
Love the cheesy voice over.

Paul Schrader should start making more movies like this and Auto Focus again!
