Also gotta love how the Fourth Doctor calls her the more affectionate "Sarah" rather than Sarah-Jane (As she prefers to be called) and then comes the Eleventh Doctor who merely calls her the more formal "Smith"
Also, there was a bit of UST between SJS and Four, but I never thought it was romantic at all. Or if it was, it was an unrequited crush on Sarah's part towards Four, who was always too alien to ever reciprocate. Now Romana II, on the other hand ...
Aw man! You cut it right before my favorite part! After she says "I bet it isn't even South Croyden," she laughs and tells the bemused looking dog "He BLEW it!" before walking away laughing. But right at the end, the camera freezes on her as she looks over her shoulder back to where the Tardis was, with a sad, wistful look on her face right as the end theme song starts. It always got me misty.
I completely agree that Sarah Jane is THE Companion of all time.
And note: this is coming from a New Series fan who started with Chris Eccleston and did not know of Sarah jane until School Reunion and was completely charmed by her.
yeah agreed that most of the companions of Doctor Who were of a non romantic basis, even with Rose through the 9th tenure, when she absorb the time vortex, it was about who the Doctor is and what he does for the universe and Earth, not jumping bones, even with the tenth incarnation in the the 4th(?) episode he's ready to run off the madam dePompadour, also this writing tactic made Martha look like a twit, all is a matter of opinion I guess
Lis Sladen once said she left the show because her obligation to it kept her from taking an important film role (which one is a mystery but I say she would have fit incredibly well as the star of 1979's My Brilliant Career, which Judy Davis a household name).
I've seen two Sarah Jane episodes, in neither did I see why she's regarded as a great companion, she wasn't terrible but nothing stood out. After seeing this seen I can only presume I watched some bad episodes for the Sarah Jane character.
She was on the series from Dec. 1973 to Oct. 1976, though by season-point to season-point, she was the longest running human companion (3 & 1/3 seasons); her calendar stay is a bit shorter than it would have been because Season 11 was pushed ahead of schedule, and that changed the start times for all later seasons. BTW: Jaimie Mccrimmon has the greatest number of serial episodes at 113 (+3 in later years), which by todays production would be 38 episodes+ x-mas specials. K-9 lasted 3-3/4 seasons
No problem. And I just noted an edit error in my post: meant to say that *post* season 11 was pushed ahead of schedule (which is why it there were only 20 episodes in season 12); the first story in season 13 - "Terror of the Zygons" - was supposed to be the end story for season 12, but had to be bumped do to production-time restraints. Yeah. I know. I'm being geeky. Just wanted to clarify. :)
It was really in the last two serials, masque of mandragora and hand of fear, that sarah jane became reduced to the typical companion. In a way, lis sladen was right to get out as soon as things were going a little south-but she always came back!
Again, well done. I remember watching this scene and just feeling so sad. I love Sarah Jane's character and was glad to see her return in the New Who.
Wow. Excellent commentary, and spot-on analysis of the Sarah Jane Smith character. And I agree that it was Lis Sladen who made SJS into the incredible Who character she became. In the hands of any other actress, SJS would have been just another female companion.
I too, never felt that the Dr/SJS relationship was romantic. Dr#3/SJS were almost father/daughter, while Dr#4/SJS were know-it-all big brother and feisty, lovable kid sister. The close intimacy of family, but no romance!

I always thought that Sarah just had a crush on the Doctor, but I don't think she was in love with him.

I agree about the constant falling in love with the doctor thing the current series has, it's on of the few things about it I'm not happy with :(

@Carbonite2008 That's why Donna Noble was so great. She didn't take any bullshit from him.

Sarah was the best. If she could have found the 'Spa" on the 3rd sub level she might have gotten the pampering she needed.
