  • I actually got more book/movie/TV suggestions off of YouTube than I did from anywhere else.

  • *grateful

  • YouTube has given me an outlet for my writing/music, and for that I am greatful.

  • YouTube introduced me to charlieissocoollike, who in turn introduced me to the vlogbrothers, who in turn introduced me to your good self, who literally five minutes ago introduced some amazing videos about the score for the movie Inception, which is one of the best films I've seen in a looooong time. Thus, I am thankful to YouTube for this :) YouTube just wins life because it is more than just an internet site. It's a billion ideas converging in one place to create something beautiful :D

  • or a poem (or both, like some of yours), of course you have to internalise the information to understand it. It's called interpretation! Bah, frustrating. Up with youtube!

  • @nogoldfish A great analysis!

  • Oh hell yes. I was at an event recently, and someone was cited as saying that the internet is external, whereas when reading poetry, you have to take the words into yourself (paraphrased, and I don't know who said it). Now am I the only one who cannot make sense of this? The external/internal argument for the internet kind of works when you're talking about memory or attention span, but in terms of valuing art it's just ridiculous. In order to interpret any information, be it a youtube video

  • So true! <3 I feel sorry for my friends who only watch stupid tv. Youtube is so much more than that!

  • Youtube is soon enough going to successfully replace the idiot box in a few years.

it sure as hell has done for me, anything i want, i can get online, i can get the news online, and i can watch RNGG on youtube, and lots of other great videos you cant on television

    .

When the NEWS starts having it's own channel on youtube, then you know the end of television is near, all that is needed is the news, and several other shows and stations will follow

  • @kokorosenshi I do see online video as the next step for tv. Accessible, user-supported and often user-generated, free...

  • i always rate and comment to and its sad most people dont

  • I agree 100% on most of what you have to say in this video. There is one point on which I disagree. I think that we as consumers of traditional media (TV, film, etc.) have a great deal of say in what kind of content gets created. I chose not to pay $10 to see Clash of the Titans, effectively thumbs downing it. Millions of others did pay to see it, thumbs upping it.

  • @HeBreaksLate Certainly consumer (dis)approval matters quite a bit with traditional media -- but I so love that anybody with a camera can put out content on YT, and you don't need loads of money to find an audience. But I do understand your point!

Thank you for taking the time to comment (=

  • I love this video. BUT I take issue with your frequent use of "IRL" to distinguish between "real life" and online life. Why is it not "real" if it's online? Youtube exists in real life!

  • @EyeMonniker Understood - I tend to use that to distinguish between my virtual-based life, and my physical-based life. YouTube is as real to me as anything else, but its nature as something that is huge and intangible makes a big difference in terms of the impact it has on us!

  • youtube has helped me gain more confidence in myself and that even the most simplest thing can be hard. It showed me there are people like you who are creative and can boost the creativity of others and even change the world. I woo want to change the world. As my favorite quote says "No matter how gifted you are, alone you cannot change the world. That is what makes humans so great." Youtube brings these people together to do this very thing. Whether it's to make smiles or to make people aware

  • Wow, beautiful words. I'm so thankful that you shared.

  • Please, please, please, please, please ^456703 make more videos! You are so good!

  • You're so sweet! Thank you!

  • sooo true, all of it.

  • Thank you!

  • Speaking of excellent content, have you ever seen WhatYouOughtToKnow? If not, then I highly recommend it. It's hilarious and has mad re-watchability, which is even more amazing given its average runtime falls somewhere between 3 and 6 mins.

And in case you don't respond to the comments on your channel's page, I'm curious, do you have a personal page or blog? Because good "content" never gets tiresome.

  • Thanks so much for your comments! I replied to most of your questions in a message -- but no, I do not have a public blog. I hope you will subscribe to keep up with my content!

  • This video is yet another example why YouTube pwns. And I don't just mean by your argument, which is solid, but by the eloquence, humor, and quality of your presentation. How long did it take to you to write and edit this?

    Truly inspiring stuff.

    {cracks whip}

So get back to work so I can enjoy more of your posts.

  • Absolutely the best thing that YouTube has done for me is to keep from utterly losing my sanity with a shouty baby in the middle of the night. As I told both vlogbrothers when I briefly met them at LeakyCon (another wonderful thing I never would have done were it not for the 3428ers and YouTube), watching their thoughtful, hilarious vlogs gave me short but wondrous moments of peace, and helped me parent more effectively by taking me outside of my own misery for just a short time.

  • The aforementioned shouty baby is now a boisterous preschooler who usually sleeps through the night, but I'm still not getting enough sleep, thanks to all the wonderful content on YouTube I never seem to feel caught up on! And John Green and the Yeti are about to have an I-hope-less-shouty baby of their own.

This is the first of your vids I have watched, but I'll be watching more very soon, and posting this to facebook. Thank you for your succinct summary. It, like you, is made of awesome.

  • I am so jealous that you have met John & Hank! I hope to spend some time with one or both of them at VidCon. And yes, I do hope their baby is less troublesome than some I have known.

Thank you so much! I hope you enjoy my content!

  • You are absolutely correct! but unfortunately this happens with every generation. We find our voice our way of doing things our way of connecting and then malevolent forces hi-jack them for their own purpose. Look at the sixties, Peace Love and all that. It tuned into a big marketing scheme and so will this. You say Not us we are different. but so did they. i.e. Jimi Hindrix is still releasing new C.D.s 40 years after his death.

  • I think it's really important to keep believing that this is our chance, our time, our opportunity. Nothing is permanent, and I know that one day YT may be archaic, but hopefully it will have given way to something even better.

  • Personaly I like youtube cause its a good way to promote ourselfs. I use it so I can show things about my band and as an artist I try to reach as many crowd I can. Good video, keep going ;)

  • Great reason! YT definitely provides artists with an opportunity to share their talents. Thank you!

  • wow this is really amazing! Well done.

  • Thanks!

  • Fantastic vid!

You articulate your points thoughtfully and well.

  • Wow, thank you!

  • This was great! I think I'll subscribe :)

  • Thanks so much!

  • You are a perfect example of how "good content rises." Well done!

  • Aww, shucks! Thank you!

  • well said. well done.

  • Thanks very much!

  • I used to think YouTube was a vapid wasteland worse than TV - until I found vlogbrothers. Now I've seen that there is so much more to it.

Great video - agree on all points!

  • Agreed! Thank you!

  • IFTBA.

i forgot to be awesome :(

    :P

    DFTBA

  • xD DFTBA (=

  • awesome, awesome video :)

    DFTBA

  • Thank you!

  • A) Yay, you're making more videos!

B.) Congrats on getting a nod from Hank!

C.) This video is awesome. Officially subscribed :-P

  • A - It appears so!

    B - I was fangirling xD

    C - Thank you, bb!

  • I loved this video, brilliant points! You hit the nail on the head.

I could talk about how YouTube has changed me and effected my life for hours, so I'm not even going to try and put all that into a comment, haha

  • Thank you very much! I'm a big fan (nice performance in NYC, by the way! I quite enjoyed it), so it's very flattering that you say so.

Perhaps you can discuss it in a video response, hmm? Practice for vidcon? ;)

  • I love your video. Very thoughtful. Thanks.

  • Thank you so much!

  • :) I agree wholeheartedly!

  • (-:

  • Interesting and insightful! This made my morning a lot happier, thank you!

  • Thank you! I'm glad to have brightened your day a little bit!

  • Youtube, and the internet in general, helps more than people know.

  • Agreed!

  • You're awesome and what you said is so, so true.

  • Thank you! Great username, btw (=

  • I completely agree with you.

But in spite of the great things on youtube you have to remember about all the dumb stuff which is here, haters being the most obvious flaw to point out.

Many of my friends simply see youtube as a source of funny/stupid videos (The aforementioned cute cats/animals/pop stars) Luckily my media studies teacher in school is a big advocate of web 2.0 and is beginning to see things our way.

YouTube has definitely made me a much more open and awesome person.

    DFTBA

  • Thank you for your comment! I'm glad that you have a teacher who is as big a fan of the "new web" as we are (=

  • FOR THE WIN! you made some excellent points. =)

  • Thanks!

  • Youtube = a fine example of the best and worst the internet has to offer. I don't know about this youtube community that you speak of, but Youtube has made watching caramellansen memes incredibly easy. And for that, It's ok in my book.

  • I totally agree with all of your points, and I thought this video was brilliant. I get so annoyed when people don't even TRY to understand how amazing the internet, and youtube in specific really is.

    Very well said. :)

  • Thanks so much!

  • very well said. This is wonderful.

  • Thank you!

  • Great video! I agree with so much of what you just said. Youtube, among other things on the internet has opened my eyes to so many different things that have truly become a part of me. I fail to see how this could be a negative viewed as a thing.

  • Thank you! I agree, I'm always a fan of more information and more transparency.

  • I'm glad you understood what I just said there! I have no clue what I was on when I wrote that last line! lol!

  • I'm glad you understood what I just said there! I have no clue what I was on when I wrote that last line! lol!

  • This was eloquent and well put. I can sometimes be in that first category of people who says "get off the internet!" because I fear that we are growing dependent on it and are losing our life skills. It is reassuring to hear how your YouTube experience has translated into the real world.

I also usually exclude YouTube when I'm condemning the internet ;) It's been such a great way to meet people and have meaningful discussions.

  • Thank you for responding! It's nice to hear that, while you do have reservations about the Internet's influence on us, you agree that YouTube does a lot of good in the world.

    Also, awesome username (=

  • Youtube has succeeded in making me more confident in myself as well as an aware person.

  • Awesome! Thanks for sharing!

  • If you say it's an instinct to rate every video you watch 5 stars, that's not providing actual feedback, that's a meaningless bump in rating. Actual feedback is an honest rating. Also, when you describe things as 'awesome' so frequently, it makes the points you make seem less important and lacking perspective, as you seem to find everything immeasurably amazing, especially when you describe VidCon as "the most awesome thing in the history of the internet and definitely in my life".

  • I ought to have clarified that point, so thank you for bringing it up. I was contrasting my previous behavior of not providing any feedback to my current one: commenting and rating videos I really enjoy. I don't 5-star every video I watch, which I may have accidentally implied! Thank you!

Fair enough. Nerdfighteria has made "awesome" a much more prevalent part of my vocabulary, which, to be fair, does have its time and place. Thank you for your thoughts!

  • Very good points! YouTube has made me A LOT more cultured. Not only do I understand and appreciate what life is like on the other side of the country, but I understand culture in countries that many other Americans never even stop to remember exist!

Also, since you did mention feedback in the video, here is some from moi: It sounded a bit like you were reading from a script, or like you were giving a speech. Loosen up! :D

  • Thank you! I absolutely do value feedback. This is only the fourth video I've made, so I am still getting a feel for the whole process. Thank you for your suggestion -- I'll do my best to relax more for next time!

  • It sounds like you and I use youtube similarly, but I think the casual user has a different experience. Until you get involved you don't really put much stock into youtube as a resource.

For instance IRL how many people do you meet that use youtube and comment/rate/sub? With no investment there is no reward. Parents/adults should be encouraged to join the conversation, they may just find something they're missing out on.

  • Agreed. YouTube is one of very few things in life that only gets more awesome the more effort one invests into it. The more I've gotten involved, the better the experience has been for me!

  • That was completely fantastic. I don't even know what more to say, you left me speechless because you hit everything right on the nail. THANK YOU!

  • Wow, thanks so much!

  • Wow, I am impressed with your eloquence! I couldn't agree with your points more.

Personally, YT has made me proud to be myself. It has introduced me to a network of people just like me. It has made me a more openminded and respectful person by introducing me to people from all walks of life. My collab channel has given me friends around the world, inspired me to make my dreams a reality and to travel. It has given me a creative outlet and has pushed me to become more confident and outgoing...

  • (continued) Shawn's work with UP inspired me to try a project I called Quitting for a Cause, in which I gave up a luxury for a month and donated my savings. I had no intentions of the idea extending past that month, but I decided to post a video on YT about it. As a result, I gained support and friendship. I was joined in my project by many others. Now, it has become a year-long project of self improvement and giving. I owe it all to youtube.

So I must agree - youtube definitely pwns!

    -Jess

  • Thank you, first of all!

Oh my word, that's so exciting! You're a model example of all that YT does for the world!

  • Ah! I was typing out a response to this with the typical 'yay, that was awesome' kind of thing, and then I saw your LJ post and was like WAIT A MINUTE HERE.

    Craziness. *is baffled*

  • xD xD xD

    Oh hey, bb!

  • It's a coincidence, just today I handed in an essay explaining why the Internet is so great for our culture. And raised a lot of these points.

    Great video :)

  • No way! I guess great minds think alike ;)

    Thank you!

  • Thanks for saying this so well! I have tried to explain the importance and value of YouTube numerous times to people who don't use it (especially some of older generations) and no matter what I say, they tend to dismiss it as a website for millions of videos of kittens. It's become such an important part of my life for all the reasons you said, and yet I can't talk to most people about it without sounding like a weirdo...

  • Well, hopefully I articulated some of what you mean to say! Thank you for watching!

  • Fantastic job!

... You were at 789?! I don't remember seeing you there.

  • Thank you!

Haha yep, I was there! I spent most of it hanging out with Karen Kavett, Caitlin Sky, and Todd of DFTBA, and fangirling Michael Buckley xD

  • Gah! I might've seen you! I was wearing a faded blue hat that said "Dam ships" on the front. And I had Matrix-like sunglasses on. And I was hanging with my friend, a tall ginger with glasses in a cowboy hat.

Did you get one of Karen's duct tape wallets?

  • Perhaps! I did not get one of her wallets, but I did get a plethora of DFTBA stickers.

  • Oh! Gah! I hate it when this kinda thing happens. I met Ehmountain at 789, didn't sign her ukulele or get a snap or footage of her and then I subbed to her on here afterwards.

  • You are right on so many levels!

For me...YouTube has helped me to loose weight. I'm part of a small collab channel called FittieFive and for the last year I've been discussing my journey to become a healthier person on the channel and the feedback and support I get from my fellow vloggers and the subscribers is amazing and has really helped. YouTube rocks!

  • That's so incredible! Good for you!

  • The FittieFive are lovely, sincere, caring, earnest, hardworking and well-intentioned people. I've been watching their vlogs since the beginning, and have found great support there in my own efforts to have a healthier lifestyle. I encourage everyone to check them out.

  • Wow, that's awesome! I'll check them out!

  • Very interesting points! Thanks so much for sharing.

~was sent by alan via twitter~

    ;)

  • Thank you!

  • I totally agree, YouTube is so much more than "David After Dentist"

  • Word!

  • Holy cow. This is fantastic. I want media-studies and cultural snobs everywhere to see this.

(Also, congratulations on getting the Hank Green Bump on Twitter.)

  • Aww, thanks so much!

xD I hadn't termed it that, but you're right!

  • This is just an amazing, informative video. The YouTube community really has changed my life and this just goes to show some of the great things that come from it. Favorited, 5 starred, and subscribed.

  • Thank you so much!

  • Thank you so much for making this video. I hate that nowadays the internet and technology in general has gotten such a bad rap. I mean, sexting and predators have scared parents into trying to limit their kids from participating in anything on the "big bad scary world" of the internet, but it really is such a great place. i feel so interconnected with those i am subscribed to. they affect my daily life, and they open my mind!

  • True. Certainly a lot of crap goes on that earns such a reputation, and it's useful to be wary of those sorts of things. But a lot about the Internet is more awesome than anything I've ever encountered!

  • "Endless tide of crappy books and movies" Totally hear you on that one.

  • xD Right?

  • What an fantastically in depth video about Youtube's effects on people!! Great job! Youtube has made me laugh, cry, and shout out loud! I love it!

  • Thank you so much!

  • Like others have said: excellent vlog! YouTube has had such a positive influence in my life. By interacting with people from all over the country and world, I've gained a personal insight on global issues and have been made aware of so many things I would otherwise have never known about.

Perhaps the best thing I've gained from YouTube is a circle of friends that encompass the U.S. and the world as I continue to interact with and meet amazing people I otherwise would have never known.

    -Beth

  • Quite true! Thanks for watching and commenting!

  • =-) this is epic. thanks hank for spreading more

  • Thank you (to you and to Hank!)

  • WTG!!!! DFTBA

  • Thank you!

  • Nice i am totally subscribing, I can totally see you becoming the next Dan Brown or just awesome utuber.

  • Wow, thanks so much! You're sweet ;)

  • This is a very excellent video. =) For me youtube has completely expanded my interests. While I have never made a video or really communicated with other users, just watching videos and reading comments shown me new music, new authors, and that even one person can do so much to change things.

  • So true! I mean, even one channel -- vlogbrothers -- has absolutely and completely transformed my life. It's so awesome!

    Thanks!

  • wonderfully done video! youtube truly is what you make of it.

  • Thank you! I'm finding that that statement is VERY true

  • Great Vlog!

  • Thank you!

  • YouTube has made me a lot of friends all over the world which is pretty good for a girl who's never left her country.

It's also helped me realize that I love making people laugh and film is more then just people on a screen.

    Great video :)

  • That's awesome! I've only been out of country once, and I too have friends all over the world.

Such a true statement! Thanks for sharing!

  • Amen to that!

  • (= Thanks!

  • YouTube FTW! Great vlog, and I'll agree with you on just about everything. Exception being that, much as we wish it would, good content doesn't always rise above the noise. I'm constantly amazed by years old gems I find with barely 100 views while dog poop (literally) gets thousands. But, yes, when the good stuff does rise above the clutter, it's amazing, and all because of people like you and me and all those who recognize that - yes - this is a community. Keep on rocking girl!

  • Thank you, firstly. Yes, there are probably thousands of exceptions in the form of great videos that don't get the recognition they deserve. But like I said, I think we have a way better chance here than anywhere else!

    Thanks for watching!

  • So awesome! I feel the same way :) through youtube I have found so many issues that interest me that I would probably not have seen other wise. I have also met people from so many different countries solely because we watched each others video's here!

Now I have to send a link of this video to my mom ^^

  • Thank you! I hope your mom likes it, too (=

  • Such wonderful commentary. While I don't communicate with anyone on you tube on a regular basis, it has opened my eyes to so many things. Many of the things you've mentioned.

I've discovered new authors, new music and new views thanks to watching videos and just in reading comments.

  • Thank you! Your point is so true -- and hopefully your relationship with the site and with its users will continue to grow with you!

  • Good case of meta; that is, the video itself proves the point it's trying to make. Rock on.

  • Thanks! Ahh, don't we all love a little meta? ;)

  • Good Good GOOD stuff.

  • Thank you!

  • It is interesting how youtube connects people. I think it promotes international connection/collaboration as you mentioned but it also promotes connection within our own local communities. I have connected with people in my life by sharing youtube videos numerous times.

Thanks for the thought provoking video. In writing this post my views changed : )

  • Great point! I think I will show this video to my friends to explain what being a YouTuber means ;)

Thank you! It means a lot that you have taken the time to, as John Green would say, think critically about the information I am sharing. I hope you continue to love YT as much as I do!

  • Very awesome and true :) DFTBA

  • Thanks!

  • I absolutely agree :) Not only has it given me insight into... well, countless things/events/theories, etc, but the fact that it is such a global community has allowed me to develop amazing relationships with some of the most amazing people I've (n)ever met :)

    Great video :)

  • Thank you! Haha, (n)ever met is quite clever ;)

  • Very good video

  • Thanks!

  • we NEED to make this go viral!

  • Wow, thank you! Haha that would be awesome, right? ;)

  • This was really excellent. I have to say, I've been making videos for going on a year now, but it's really been in the last 2 months or so that things have really started working out for me. I've gotten much more creative, and my subscribers are responsive, and what really pushes me to keep going is that I've met a lot of people who value creativity as much as I do, and who have become an excellent support group. It's given me lots of motivation to keep producing and putting my voice out there.

  • That's so true! The more involved I become in YouTube, the more it gives me. There are very few things in life that only benefit you more as you increase your participation.

    Thank you!

  • That was extremely intelligent & well said. Thanks for sharing! :)

  • Thanks (=

  • What a fantastic video!

  • Thank you!

  • Ahh, I'm so glad Hank tweeted about this ^_^

You are so right, Youtube is completely and entirely made of awesome <3

And nerdfighter gatherings? Best. Thing. Ever. <3.

  • Oh gosh, me too! I'm doing my happy dance!

So true! The closest thing to a nf gathering I've attended was Tom Milsom's NYC concert. That was epic.

  • Ohh!! Awesome!! I saw Tom Milson at summer in the city ^_^ besides that.. we have a LOT of nerdfighter gatherings in the Netherlands - you should totally try to organize something in your area ;D

  • you are pritty.

  • *blush* Thank you!

  • twiss

  • This is exactly how I feel - not until participating in the Project for Awesome this year did I realize how big of an impact youtube can make, and how many awesome youtubers there are out there. Not to mention how great it felt to be a part of it. Awesome, awesome video. :)

  • Thank you! P4A was actually the highlight of my December (=

  • Excellent video! I agree most with your point about a global community. I've learned so much about other parts of the world from vloggers in other countries.

  • Thank you. Yes, I learned about the election scandal in Iran from YouTube, and I've been keeping up with the news there ever since.

  • Rated, commented, favorited and subscribed. I guess I got the concept. ;)

  • Oh gosh, thank you!

  • you're very articulate.

hank seemed to appreciate your video as well!

  • Thanks!

(oh man, I'm fangirling so much!)

  • YES!!! Very thoughtful, insightful, and intelligent. Well done.

  • New Zealand watcher. Well played miss.

  • :D Why, thank you for watching!

  • Well put -- I love it!!

  • Thank you!
