  • from the live album The Kingston Trio ... from the Hungri i 1958 released january 59

  • 0:49 To save you some time.

  • Beautifully done.

  • This is hilarious :D

  • re: richyyyy's comment--did you really think Dave was being serious in his lead-in? How old are you --12?

  • This was a nice version giving credence to the original recording in 1939.

  • I really love their live albums. They had real talent and presence.

  • Terrific Song!

  • Somehow I found the little intro "joke" a bit disrespectful.

  • @Palomee16 then you're a ridiculously over-sensitive pussy

  • @scandmx5atl Is that so? One would think your overreacting over a mere comment on Youtube would have more pussy like qualities.

  • @Palomee16 well you're replying to it tool lmao

  • Comment removed

  • @Palomee16 nice english hahahahaa

  • These guys are represented by the "New Main Street Singers" in the mockumentary "A Mighty Wind" - they are true, song-stealing A*holes who stole this song from Pete Seeger (Bob Seeger's dad).

  • @johnny07652 I'm assuming you're joking because you can't be wrong on three out of three things in one post. Can you?

  • Comment removed

  • @johnny07652 I thought this was an African song written by a South African!

  • @johnny07652 nah, the new main street singers were the new christie minstrels. And bob and pete are not related.

  • tragic! improper translation of lyrics as well. Dolts. Ha ha.

  • @justaman6972 In case you didn't care to notice all the other jokes in the beginning, it was a continuation of their humor as they actually didn't sing any words at all... Ya gotta be a little quicker to catch the droll humor. They also made it sound at the end like they were doing some type of movement on stage to be funny as well.

  • Do you know that it is actually Dave Guard singing the high part in this song. Shows how versatile he was. He sang high, low and everything in between. He was the best and left the Trio far too soon.

  • I've always assumed any live KT version of "Wimoweh" was pure fun, never meant to be taken as serious singing. In my little collection of Kingston Trio live "Wimoweh" recordings, no two the same, I hear all kinds of silly stuff -- like their tenor hitting a countertenor style tarzan-ish yodel.

I still haven't found "the one", or haven't been able to hear "that part" yet if I do have it, where reportedly one can hear John going "Jagger" and singing "i can't get NO-OH NO-OH satisfaction".

  • race monger.

  • @bitchylawlor123

Guarandamntee ya I can, and I can find many tenors who could do the high harmonies.

    Nobody can outsing us bluegrassers.

  • Yeah I love the trio but they should have done something more with this song. Like actual words.

  • the tarriers did a sing along of this on tv nuff said

  • Don't have any anger issues do you?

  • If it weren't for Americans, you never would have heard this song.

Think about that, you fargin' racist idiot full of hate.

  • Jesus Christ on a crutch! I fell into the French video. Oh well. Anyway, great song. Hillarious opening. Viva de la revolucion! or something along those lines...

  • Good cover. But you should listen to the original by Salomon Linda and the Evening Stars.

    It's called "Mbube".

  • Recorded by the Trio live in 1958 ('capitol mono master # 30205) for the January 5,1959 release FROM THE HUNGRY I in San Francisco- # 2 peak position for 4 weeks - 178 weeks charted

  • Pete Seeger said this is a Zulu prayer for the return of Shaka Zulu the war leader who nearly defeated the British tha were settling (invading) the Zulu tribal lands. Shaka is the "sleeping lion"

  • Great...watched these guys in 1959 and they were at the top right in the beginning. They were hysterical in person.

  • Mount Kilimanjaro

  • Great images. Thank you for posting this. Gosh, they were so young.

  • RIP NICK THANK !!YOU !!

  • RIP NICK!!!!!

  • Wondereful,I first saw these guys in Atlanta,'65 they were AWESOME.They finished with "When the Saints Go Marching In." Next saw the KT in 1969 after Stewart left, working at the Bistro,Atlanta. One of the replacements was a guy named Connor I believe. He had talent equal to Guard and Stewart(well almost).Folk had given way to the british invasion.I was going to Vietnam and I spent all my leave going to hear these guys. Shane did "Don't make promises you can't keep." It was a great song for him.

Thanks for this version of Solomon Linda's "mbube". It's like the Original quite great!!

    5 Sterne / 5 Stars

  • it was a zulu chant,,and stolen...but such is life..

  • I thought Pete Seeger wrote Wimoweh?

  • Actually, the song was written by Solomon Linda and first recorded by The Evening Birds. And unfortunately over time digressed to this version and eventually making it's way into the greedy hands of Disney as well. By the way the translation of the lyrics that he reads at the beginning are complete BS. There is actually a documentary out based on the journey of this song as it's really quite amazing, it's called "A Lion's Trail".

  • Thank you so very much for posting this. Regardless of 'who was better or worse' these guys were my 'daddy's' faves and it brings many fond memories when hearing them. I did not 'know' this song and why I loved it so much until I heard this. Years flooded back... never underestimate a memory. God bless you...

  • I like when karl denver sings this song, just search his name.

  • Pete Seeger and the Weavers did a nice version.

  • Look up Mbube on Youtube for a list of performers.

Originally in 1939 in South Africa by Solomon Linda, then by Pete Seeger with the Weavers in the 1950s, then of course the Tokens got hold of the song and it became the ubiquitous "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" in 1961.

Also search Youtube for Solomon Linda (can't post URL here)

Solomon Linda's Mbube became synonymous with that style of African close harmony... he was a genius who didn't get the credit he deserved.

  • I have another recording of these guys doing it better; ex pre facto Limewire. They must have been working to perfect it. I like it rough like it is here. My understanding is that Solomon LInda didn't mind Pete's version, or the Token's, or the Kingston Trio, but when Disney exploited it in the Film version of the Lion King, Solomon Linda's relatives sued and I hope they got a fat settlement.

  • Who else have done this?

  • The best is by far by Miriam Makeba!

However her version is in Zhulu, and the lyrics is a bit different.

  • this sucks, they were not funny or anything... the only version is the original african by solomon linda

  • no... the miriam makeba and the Ladysmith Black Mambazo versions are also good and pretty faithful

  • So,only if somebody from Africa decides to re-make it, it's O.K?

  • no.... I didn't say that.... I answered negatively to a negative comment, making mine positive, no?

And take a look at the keyword "also", where I was pointing out to other youtube users that they should check them out....

Stop looking for things where there isn't anything to look for!

  • Danniel, chill. ANYONE reading would read it the way dunskie, did. Chill!

  • nice collage of pics. song from the Hungry I album.

  • wow suerb guys that was amazing i just love the kingston trio they are fab thanks for letting me hear this 5 stars for this song cheers ans
