i read a comment on youtube saying that if you do not know michel jackson you do not know music well yo are wrong if you do not know carpenters YOU DO NOT KNOW MUSIC!
@mwmatthewkc51 Michael Jackson once commented that he loved The Carpenters. John Lennon also complimented Karen on her "lovely" voice when the two bumped into each other in Los Angeles in the late 70s.
Remember this was the 80s...and the Carpenters were floundering sound-wise from 1976-into the 80s. Most of the 80s pop music now sounds pretty horrible.
If Karen had gotten well, they could have easily branched off into beautiful Jazz standards albums.
A critic actually called Richard "chubby," not Karen. Urban myth has created all of these rumors of people calling her fat, but in reality it never happened. Her anorexia can be directly traced to her removal from the drums (she says it herself : "not playing at all nearly killed me.") She had far fewer body and weight issues than one is led to believe.
Anyone who says "their music sucks" does not know the meaning of the word "class". Their music stands above all that's out there today. Their music was timeless and classic.
One of my three favorite female singers ever (the other two are Joni Mitchell and Elizabeth Fraser). This is one of the last times to see her alive, and performing such a great song. Karen was so talented and is dearly missed. God bless you always Karen, rest in peace. Thank you for posting this video.
I don't think America knows how much talent it lost when Karen died. Even today most people are unaware of the enormous, unusual talent Karen was. That is a great pity. :(
love this song a lot!! Love her range on this song. She is truly amazing in how she can do that. She is one of my idols and I love to listen to The Carpenters and do everyday!! Richard and Karen are the best!!! Would have loved to meet Karen and Richard. Love their music and thanks for posting this video. The Carpenters are the best!!!!
Sorry carpentersfan1. I meant to click on the hand that said good comment. But I click on the negative one by mistake. But i agree. It's a totally awesome song!
All the problems started because some idiotic critic said chubby little sister when referring to a concert by Richard and Karen. I hope he goes to his grave knowing what harm he caused her.
You should know that it's not all about body image issues. There's usually something wrong in the person's life. So concentrating on food and weight is an escape. I know from my personal struggle with bulimia that it's not about that.
This song so had and captured an early 1980's sound if Karen were able to live just a while longer the 1980's would have been her decade. Miss you Karen!!!!!
You got that right! I believe she was 5'4" and weighed 85 lbs in this video. When she checked herself into the hospital back in '82,she weighed 78 lbs! But putting weight on too quickly killed her. She gained 30 lbs in 6 weeks. She was "recovered" at the time of her death because she was no longer underweight.
I think Michael McDonald was the inspiration for this sound. The Doobie Brothers had hit it big with a keyboard based sound around this time.

Their songs never get old, and this one is one of my favorites, with Karen's sweet mellow voice bringing out the best in the music and lyrics.

I've heard that after performing, she had to lie down back stage. I'm amazed she was able to perform at all.

Unbelievable, didn't know about this... it really makes me sad.
