A very underrated band and song. I still remember when this song came out, and then hearing about what had happened (can't remember what in order though). Weird to think both this song/accident happened 16 years ago.
No better time to be a teen than the '90's. Saw the reformed version of For Squirrels sometime in the mid 90's at The reggency Showcase in Springfield MO.
Just a quick update for For Squirrels fans, if anyone is wondering about Travis Tooke - he just recorded two new amazing songs in Asbury Park, NJ w/producer Jeff Plate. We hope some of you are interested in hearing them when they are released.
Broke out "Example" today for the first time in years. (Spooky thing, there was a long dead spider having been squished when I last took it out still dried to the jewel case) In a moment, "8:02 PM" was roaring through my surround sound, and those guys lived again.
i want sony BMG to make a film of the "band that never was" fuck this album was an instrumental part of my youth.......... and i put it to them to re-release the album as covers done by the likes of R.E.M. , the foo fighters and all their influences etc......look out for the FB fan page soon.......I'm on it!!
Such a shame what happened to these guys. Two of the band members killed in a wreck only a month before the release of their debut album. I used to watch this video all of the time on MTV's "120 Minutes" every Sunday night in late '95.
@njh2280 I remember when I watched this video for the first time back in 1995. I was looking at the video and was thinking that they used the old clips to show them paying over the years. I was unaware that two members had been killed at the time and the other two were still in the hospital recovering from their injuries. Sometimes I wonder at how far this band could have gone had the accident not happened.
Yes, it is about Kurt Curbain and NOT by him. "Example" is a freakishly good album by For Squirrels who would have done much more if not for the horrible motor accident that killed most of the band.
@RickOFtheJames Not all. Jack Vigiliatura and Bill White died in 1995. However, a reformed "for squirrels" got together to play a few shows after the accident. I remember going to one of those shows. You could tell the band was frustrated and exhausted. Jack Greigo (drummer) had some kind of sling setup supporting his arms, i suppose he was still recovering at the time. Travis Tooke lost it on stage, and was visibly in tears. I suppose the shows were a release for them at a very hard time.
This song Legit gives me goose bumps everytime i hear it. Epic. Def an all-time favorite song. I still have the t shirt that came with the album, that was 16 years ago.....
@couchwanker Im pretty sure this song was released a couple of years after Kurt died. And I think it was written in tribute to Kurt, but not written by him.
This whole album is so FUCKING GOOD. I bought it right after I heard this song when it debuted on MTV. Such a tragedy what happend to this band. they could have been GREAT.
Yeah, MAJOR flashback... I saw them after the accident when they still called themselves For Squirrels @ Irving Plaza in NYC, and then again when they toured in support of Subrosa/Never Bet the Devil Your Head, another incredible album. For those who don't know, after the accident, they recruited their old bassist & Travis went from guitar to guitar & lead vocals. I'm still dying to hear Baypath Road, I'm told it's excellent....
this is my favorite band of all time . although disenchanted is one of their best songs and under smithville!!!!!! Wish they could of been around for a bit longer
I was anxiously awaiting their club appearances in RI; had just discovered their music & awesomeness. What lost potential! What loss of enormous talent! Someone should write a song in tribute to them (but not me! That would end up being an insult if I attempted a song). And, to all of you who feel old, because you were in 5th grade!!!! Please, get over it. I didn't feel ancient, but after reading that & knowing that I was in college at that time... I guess I should be in the old folks home now!
I saw these guys perform in Upstate New York 10 days before the accident in 1995 and they were great. Was anyone else at that show at Saratoga Winners in Cohoes? I love this song and the album. I used to play this song on my college radio show. Great memories!
@RIPmyers If your interested,8:02 p.m. can be found at playlist.com.A song listed as Track 03,which is called Under Smithville(my favorite from Example) is also worth a listen. Still in Macon? Not far from ya'. In Columbus.
@veritasrex66 I'm further south than that. South Florida on the treasure coast. when I DID live in Georgia, it was in Austell. a town outside of Atlanta
@MrProfessornutbutter It's still chilling to here the lead singer's voice when I listein to it. I miss my younger days but this song reminds me of good times....."Ship me off to the morgue, I'm ready to be buried away down in my bed and I'm alone without the sun"
@RIPmyers exactly this. hey, it's worth mentioning that "8:02 PM", their only follow up single from their only album with the original line-up is worth listening to, if you can find it.
Ah, the nostalgia is rushing over me like a wave...I listened to the For Squirrels in college. It's all about my college days for this song...that's what this songs means to me at least. How lovely the feeling...
