My Champ Orc is still my favorite overhead driver, keep it in the bag just for those accurate long drives. I suggest trying one out if you're a thumber-heavy player.
@blahk1234454 I actually tomahawk an orc on an island hole on one of my home courses. It's really consistent and doesn't take much effort to get it there.
I wonder how the Aerobie Epic has still the PDGA approvement, and the other hand for example, the Gateway Ninja doesn´t. (Im not really sure, but heard that the main reason why Gateway Ninja is illegal is its got too wide rim) The Epic is (IMO) much more weird disc, and has a rim which, is even more wide (despite the eccentric desing)
In these (not so offical usually) overhead-thrown distance competitions the Aerobie Epic is often banned...
@hurmave Well, I don't really know how it all works. But as far as I know, the Epic was grandfathered into PDGA approval. Maybe it was originally accepted and managed to keep it's status even after rules were changed?
I'd say that the Epic should be legal. It's weird yes, but it just caters to a certain thrower. People who are really strong backhanders or side-armers get discs that they can throw 600 feet or so. So why wouldn't a disc that superior overhanders can throw that far be legal?
@loinclothe I see your point.. And if you think about it, the Epic is perhaps one of the most difficult disc to control, especially if it´s windy. So perhaps it kind of brings the balance between ordinary discs and epic. Its great in some cases, and doesn´t need that much power to get it fly far distaces thrown overhead, but overall it isn´t that practical.
I´m just thinking.. If the epic is kind of "shortcut" to far distance overhead drives, why the Ninja is still a bit like "no no" ?
I haven´t personally tried the gateway Ninja yet, but i´ve heard its quite a flyer.. Could think it simiraly kind of "shortcut" for those who hasn´t got that much power for backhand or forehand.. I think it should also be legal.
But this is just me wondering, a bit offtopic and so... :) no big deal
@hurmave I agree that it should be legal. I don't know much about the ninja but it seems to me that disc companies will continue to come out with better and further flying discs. The game must adapt to those discs. People are maximizing disc capabilities when throw backhand. All Aerobie did was recognize that ppl throw overhand and alter the aerodynamics to suit that style. Just like some ppl throw backhands further than others, some ppl throw epics further too. Fair enough. Limits to each.
It doesn't make much sense to me that a disc (if made to the specified standards) wouldn't be legal just because it could add more distance. The difference between top players and amateurs is that while amateurs (like me) may hit 500+ feet, they aren't as consistent, don't throw up shots as well, and don't putt as well. Top pros will remain on top and the game advances and becomes more fun. Just my opinion though.
@mx23ang 480 was my approximate measurement, and I don't have a wheel to roll things off with. Regardless, that's a pretty good estimate probably. Doubt if you want, but I've throw over 500 with one of those according to the signs that tell how far away the basket is. And in distance drive competitions (which is more like what I was doing) top pros will throw over 600 feet.
How do you get the disc to turn right side up? when i throw one it flips about 180 degrees and ends up verticle. or is it just that disc your throwing?
@novistatic It's hard to get a regular driver to turn all the way over, but these discs (aerobie epics) are meant to be thrown as a thumber or tomahawk and turn all the way over and fly like a standard backhand or forehand throw. Super distance. And only about 8 bucks.
Fluttered in the shot just meant it looked to me like it didn't spin as flat as possible because it had been bent so it wasn't flat. That's just being nitpicky though! Great vid. I love the epic for overhand shots.
@Flyzguy Gotcha, I just couldn't tell if it had any wobble or not so I asked. Thanks for imparting extra knowledge. People need to love this disc!! I shot half the potential in my arm playing baseball in high school, but aside from arm problems...I'd throw this disc every time I needed to throw something super far.
I cringed when I saw you only bend it on one side like a taco - and then it fluttered in the shot. Tune it by bending it, rotating it in your hands by a bit, then bend it some more, and repeat all the way around the disc perimeter. Tacos are fer eatin, not throwin.
@Flyzguy Haha, I think I only bend it once because I'm not willing to put in the time of bending it again. I will say though, these particular tacos fly pretty far. After a week or so I stop bending them at all, but I'll do a full 360 degree bend on the fresh ones. What do you mean when you said "and then it fluttered in the shot."?
@TheMatt1026 Well if you go right from the mando to the basket it'd be 663 feet. My shot went straight past the mando by quite a bit and toward the road. I think it's quite a bit more than 500 to the road, but I've never measured it. I just guessed using what I knew about the hole's length and how far I've thrown previous tomahawks. I only know of one throw that I think went further than that one and it was basket high on 14 at pleasant view. I need to get a wheel and get an exact distance.
@TheMatt1026 Just did a rough measurement from the approximate landing spot to the tee using two tape measures and came up with 480 feet on the dot. That was right in the middle of my estimate at the time, so I'm assuming it's at least respectably close to the actual distance.
@TheMatt1026 Haha, well it wasn't raining when I went. So no rain + long sleeves + 60 degrees = as good a time as any. Yeah, it doesn't happen a lot. Thanks.
@MrNa8er They do get beat up more quickly than a champion plastic disc or something. But ideally, if you can turn them over well, they don't land too hard or on a big hyzer. I find that they also tend to fly a little better probably once they're beat in some, too. You may have to replace them every now and then, but they float (so you won't lose them in water) and they're only like 8 bucks so they're easier to replace.
@hultinshustlin Haha, I know. Not entirely his fault. That camera isn't real great and it's a touch screen that isn't very sensitive. He was hitting the button but it didn't work until it was too late.
@loinclothe wo weird touch screen zoom. well anyways nice drives. I have tried that grip with a forehand and i can tell i get way more power but i lose alot of control. Looks like I should probably learn it though, I'm sure once you do the control is the same.
@hultinshustlin Oh yeah man, definitely on the control. If I tomahawk on a consistent basis I can usually drop a 300 foot tomahawk within 15 or 20 feet of the basket 90% of the time. Never off by much.
WHERE IS BOBBY MUMBLINS!!!! I WANT MUMBLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That dude can crush. Ive seen mumbles throw like 350ft. WOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He is also gay, and he wears 2 shirts
@l1l2r1r2udlrrldu Haha, well I don't claim to bend it the way the designer intended, that's just the way I've seen it's flight change. Cool idea with the night throw though! I'm still working to find a good way to see this thing's entire flight. Better camera might help!
i haven't quite figured out the tomahawk, i use it for up shots but im stuck with a 30' putt. i just figured out how to putt finally so I can try to make them long ones
@livinloud840 Yeah, I use a tomahawk with a different disc (dx wraith) for accurate up shots. It's a really good tool, but if you truly figure out the tomahawk, it can be a great tool for clear overhead drives around 300 to 400 feet.
@Benjameenx509x You really should try to avoid commenting on things you have no way of knowing about. And as I said before...good for the first person who truly invented that grip, but I did not learn that grip from anyone else, so I came up with it for myself. I claim no rights to that grip, I just use it to tomahawk farther than people like you. Have a nice day.
@JSKiZZinQflat Thanks man, I do the best with the camera I've got. I'd like to find an angle and a camera that can show the entire flight, start to finish.
@Benjameenx509x How about... "I don't throw it like a lot of people do because it's super weak. So this is the way I grip it, this is the way I have always gripped it, I didn't learn it from anyone, so yes, I modified it." Other people may do that too, I'm just showing people what I do differently to throw tomahawks a long way.
@frolfhaus21 Haha, thanks man. Yeah, I've heard a lot of people say they throw it as a thumber, but I've always been a tomahawk person. Thumbers feel weird, probably because I have short thumbs, haha.
@loinclothe Yea, I think it feels wierd too, but it still works decent. Check out my Aerobie Epic Review video if you get the chance. I had one pretty nice thumber, but i don't usually throw them.
@frolfhaus21 Yeah, I remembered your video when I saw it because I've seen it before when I was looking around to see if anyone had a tomahawking tutorial I could point people towards, but ended up just making my own. I may try some thumbers just to see what I can do. Either way, I'll more than likely just use the Epic as a crowd pleaser, but it is really sweet to watch and gets lots of ooohhs and aaahhhs.

@mx23ang Toppros backhand up to 700. 500 is possible with a overhead. Ville Pippo has thrown overheads 600.
