@spartan117ism OMG I'm so sorry for the late reply. Havent logged in months as I'm focused on a much bigger channel
Yes, If you already are running 10.6 Snow Leopard, you may go ahead & download Lion from the Mac App Store. I did & it worked perfectly. Tho I'm not sure if you can do that from 10.5 Leopard. So yeah, you're good if you already have snow Leopard purring :)
Do you like it? I have this same imac 2 core duo.I was told by an apple agent the memory is pretty decent size & upgrade the RAM since it's only 1, but only if I'm gonna do major stuff on it, which I don't only use it for everyday browsing and everyday work on it. Question if I upgrade the RAM I can upgrade to the newest version Lion, but what would be the difference in the mac itself? in other words if a newer 20011 mac has LION & this mac is an 06 also has the Lion what's the difference?
@AF0093 I really loved this iMac. There have been road bumps along the way but I had Applecare Coverage.
The LCD was replaced a month after the 3 year coverage ended but apple stepped in & did the repair for free. I've had the superdrive replaced, & during the 1st year the logic board was replaced but it wasnt a necessary fix.
I replaced the HDD myself to a larger 500GB HD & it's been working beautifully. I've given this iMac to my Niece how just loves it. Oh, It runs Lion beautifully :)
I still love my iMac, your videos on the 17" influenced me to buy one, and I just upgraded it to 1tb. I believe that these iMacs are way more expandable in terms of ease and they are great tools for almost any task in todays world. Apple built em strong and they aren't breaking down anytime soon.
@electrotech555 Yeah these were easy to fix. I loved how such an Old Mac could still handle everything I threw at it with ease. (Except games) Issue with the 17" is the LCD which after 3 yrs, they develop this vertical line defect. Happened to this a month after the 3 yr Applecare coverage, but apple fixed it free anyway. Did a 500 GB HD upgrade myself after Applecare
Runs Lion perfectly. Gave it to my niece 2 months ago & she just loves it & I'm sure she'll get many yrs of use out of it :)
@obeliskandra This is a Late 2006 2 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo model & I have since installed 10.7 Lion on it with ease through the App Store :P Runs Lion beautifully & if anything, runs better with it.

I do recall using Photoshop CS3 in a graphic design course I took which was full of PowerMac G5's with Dual 2 Ghz G5's & 4 GB of Ram in each I think. I found this iMac at home worked heavy filters & handled large photos much faster than the G5's used in Class.
It still pretty much still handles whatever I throw at it, I still kinda like it more than the newest Mac Mini I have.

So no nobody can get away with the $29 DVD anymore. LOL I'm 1 of those types thats 1st in line to get a new Mac OS X when it comes out. hehe.
I always figured if Apple wanted to play Nasty, I can reclaim that I do have a Family Pack copy of Leopard ( Which I have). It's never been the case. I just don't like Simply upgrading over another OS. Could be a mental thing but I feel it runs better from a clean install Like I did.
Like said, you need to get the Mac OS X, iLife & iWork Combo. Apple Markets it as the Mac Box Set for $129 which is a great deal. You may find it cheaper elsewhere.
The only standalone copy of Snow Leopard Apple Markets is the upgrade DVD but it's no use to you as u still have Tiger.
The Logic Board Didn't Have to be replaced. I kept hearing a click sound while adjusting volume or before any sound effect. Turned out it's just the soundcard shutting on and off to save energy when not in use.
SuperDrive chatter and Scratch my Discs shortly after. I think the Genius damaged it during the LB repair so it was avoidable.
The LCD had a vertical line just after 3 years, 1 month after Applecare ran out. Apple Honored the repair.
I also replaced the Hard Drive. The Stock 160GB HD was working fine but I wanted more internal space. I replaced it myself successfully with A 500GB WD Caviar Blue. 1st time I ever ripped it apart..Took almost 2 hours as I used an online vid to refer. This was around March.
For now, I expect this iMac to give me at least another 2-3 years without trouble. I'm lettin my parents use it which they love. I took them off a 2005 2.8ghz P4 PC I custom built with XP Pro.
i just put 10.5.7 on my Compaq presario c500 took me a week of going through distros but i got it. I love the stability of macs os and it looks cool. But I can't afford the hardware. But trust me when i can afford it I'm gettin a mac. I also have a custom tower pc 2.11 ghz dual core AMD 4 gig ram soundblaster xfi soundcard 6 usb ports xp and 7 64 bit

Really, u'rs is a much better. U're 1.06Ghz faster, bigger screen, 1066Mhz FSB speed vs my 667Mhz, better graphics, higher ram limit which mine tops out at only 3GB, LED Backlit Display, and the SD Card slot. Oh yeah, I like the aluminum casing much better than the white plastic I have. C'mon I'm jealous here.!!!!
@pokeeto2 well, all of that info is true and it actually made me laugh because you make jealousy sound funny lol but the overall design, same awkward square same black apple (talking about the monitor/overall comp) only difference is the mouse and keyboard so yep
True. Only reason why I haven't bought a new iMac is because of that. ( I'm Only jealous of your specs ). Last time I was wowed by an iMac was when the iMac G4 Came out. Still my favorite design. Then it was the Mac Mini G4 1.25Ghz which was my First Mac.
I'll replace my iMac when Apple comes out with the next complete redesign of the iMac. Not a refresh. That could be another 1-2+ years. By then, it will be over 6 years old. I may drop a 500GB HDD into it soon.
@pokeeto2 you're a smart guy for doing tht and yeah i wanted to see something new you know like a new design maybe but apple works fast, but all they do is refresh. and im more of a desktop kinda guy i dont like laptops. i dont travel much so its not a problem for me
Same here. I haven't used my iBook G4 in a while. It's been lifeless under my bed for weeks now. I've been so turned off to use it lately. My iPod Touch took over most of it's roles.
I just hope Apple makes the Next iMac more user-friendly for Repairs. The iMac G5 was very accessible. All these intel iMacs much more complex (except for Ram replacement).
@pokeeto2 yea i used to have a penryn macbook pro (late 2007 macbook pro) but yea my itouch took over and apple has to create their own intel based thing somehow. they did come through though with the new models theyre great and lol about the putting under the bed haha
I have a mac G5 with only 512mb, now when i insert the original snow lepard. It will not show the disk in the boot menu also when i boot with C pressed it will not work
Startup you iMac ( before or during the chime) press and hold the these keys in the following order. Command, Option, P, R ....... Keep holding them down until you here the startup chime again for a 2nd time. Release..
Aluminum ones are better. Yours has a PRo look while mine has a more feminine look. The only advantage I have is my screen is non glossy & theres no glare. Other that that, I wished I had an Aluminum one with a bigger screen. The plastic is shiny & is prone to scratches/scuffs. Mine has many. The LCD was replaced a month ago because of vertical blue lines. (Thanks AppleCare!!) I plan to use mine for another 3 years if I can, or until it dies.
i agree the white ones seem to be stronger and more versatile. my hard drive kicked the bucket two months after applecare and i had it replaced with a 1 tb. it runs great. planning on using it for another 2 or 3 years before i give it away. thing is a beast. the non glare display on them is nice. i made sure i got a matte display on my Macbook pro when i bought it on ebay. the 20 inch is nice, and I never notice any scratching like pokeeto2 says. mine is fine and is in a home office enviornment.
Anybody knows how I can clone my Hard Drive Along with the Windows Partition ??? I've been thinking of getting a 500GB, 750GB, or a 1TB Drive. When I have open projects and undeleted stuff, I can have as little as 12GB left when I normally have 85GB free.
I want to replace the drive myself & I've never opened an iMac before, just the lid below to Max out the Ram. I've built a Custom windows PC but this is way different. This iMac only has 160GB.
I cant see if you already got an answer to your question
How to clone a hard drive:
1. Initialise the new drive with the correct partition table (choose Partition in the disk utility, then 1 Partition, next Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and under Options the GUID Partition Table).
2. Use the disk utilitys function Restore to clone the Mac OS X partition.
3. Use WinClone to copy the Windows system onto a newly created Boot Camp partition.
I think U should get more ram. Leopard will work but as soon as you have a few open apps, u will quickly run low and it will slow down. I have a 1.25GHz Mac Mini G4 with 1GB. After bootup, it has about 522mb free. Open Firefox, iTunes, iMovie and before u know it, I suddenly have about 45MB left and the system slows down.
Leopard does use up more Ram than Tiger. I think your G5 uses PC3200 Ram @ 400MHz. a 1GB Stick is about $35. I'm almost sure yours has Two 512MB sticks.
i did tiger to snow leopard with this same computer and 1 gb ram works perfect and way faster so leopard will do fine but get snow leopard.way cheaper and newer technology REALLY fast too
Well for this generation iMac, It's always been specified that it supports 3gb of ram. I think I've heard you can go beyond 3GB ( Let say 4GB) but the system will not report it. What I don't know is if the system will use it.
I can safely say that you're good with 3GB RAM, the system does use and report it. I have One 2GB and a 1GB stick. After boot, it reports about 2.5GB free ram. Originally it came with Two 512MB sticks totaling 1GB of Ram which was hardly enough even with Tiger 10.4.
How ? Do PC's have the best music software built in with ilife ,on each mac ,? ,do they have the most profestional music software made by them , for them , I think not
if macs aren't built for music then why does adobe make their creatice suites for mac, why does ableton live run on mac, and what the hell do you call Logic Studio- kid software, maybe if you consider amateur software to cost half a grand.
@BarricadeSlade I'm on a Mac right now, and I'm gonna have to say that Windows 7's new taskbar is much, much better than the dock. It may have been inspired by the dock, but they definitely improved on it. It's not just a rip off.
I haven't tried Win 7, only dealt with Vista on cousins pc's.
I can't say anything about Win7 but ever since snow leopard came out, I never had to access my programs through the Hard Disc icon ( Finder ) anymore. I Access everything through the dock. I only go the old way to quickView stuff, and it's not all often.
@pokeeto2 The Dock works as a decent app launcher, but it is very subpar in window management in my opinion. The Windows 7 superbar handles app both launching and window management very well by comparison. Although Exposé on the Mac really does help the situation, and the trackpad initiation is very convenient. Still, between the new taskbar and the dock, the taskbar just wins this for me. Anyway, my point was just that it's not just some cheap knockoff of the dock; it really is useful.
Spaces actually came in handy when I had to find dozens of sources & material for a report I had to do the day. Helped me avoid having everything into one desktop. I had 9 set spaces, (kinda like having 9 cleared desktop )
For Win XP Pro SP3 which I have on this and on a new Mini, I just used this knockoff dock called RocketDock to help out in accessing Apps. But really it's just a bunch of shortcut icons places in a line to simulate dock. It's half assed but it works.
@pokeeto2 I actually haven't used or even activated spaces yet, but I used a similar program on certain Linux distros before. It really does come in handy, although I never really find myself needing more than maybe two or three desktops max. I think I'll try it out now, actually.
And I used to have Rocket Dock on Windows XP and Vista, haha. Windows 7 kind of made that program superfluous now, though, obviously. :P
How...? I've used xp, vista, and seven, and they ALL had the quick launch, which is what I'm sure you're talking about. I can't speak on behalf of the earlier OSes though. And if you want to see some copying, take a good look at ubuntu. Copies EVERYTHING from either OS x or windows.
@Legofan78 They did not copy the iPhone. Where did you get something like that? Wikipedia? Hell, No. Windows Phone is totally different from the iPhone, because it's totally different from other smartphones, do to the tiles that update every time, a more enhanced interface, and more.
Actually, you're the Wintard for not following the Title, and the Description. You will not find any Windows, Mac or Linux computer that will startup fresh for the first time after just installing the OS in 34 Seconds. Especially when loading setup Assistant or in your case, that Merlin $h!t if Microsoft still uses that theme.
After this boot. My iMac starts up in about the same 34 seconds without my EXT HDD connected which does add 10 seconds if it is connected.
but anyway windows 7 takes much longer after all those virus scanners i must download 1:31secs = ☹
and yes i have a mac(bootcamp FTW) but i dont have snow it doesn't make any since to get an operating system at 10.6 ill just wait till house cat or what ever is next lol
i hate macs aka imac and mac pro but for their os mac osx all versions good for laptops And Yes Macs Get Viruses I Had A virus That Made THe Driver which was 120 gb to 300 kb lol formatted reinstalled and installed iantivirus
Dude (or girl), that question is really stupid. Bootcamp comes with every intel mac, and boot camp allows you to run windows or linux natively on any intel mac. It also comes with Mac OS X Leopard and later.
Boot camp IS NOT emulation. There is pretty much NO REASON to not use boot camp.
Do you realize your comment will obviously get a thumbs down on your comment? You are trolling. Safari has way better security then IE 8. Is this a joke? IE's JScript (jack_somebody_off script) can use activeX to write files to your computer.
I agree, IE is safer and can overwrite all my files.
Did you noticed that system boot and system shutdown are fast as Tiger ones? And the blue screen during the system shutdown came back? Just like Tiger! That blue screen was eliminated in Leopard!
I think that Snow Leopard is the real heir of Tiger! :)
It's a whole lot more than cool Intros. It's just so much easier to use. Besides you don't even have to make a complete Mac Transition. Just Install windows too and use it when you have to. Thats what I do and I hardly ever have to use windows. Now, I only use windows just to use a cheap USB Video Adapter thats only compatable with Windows. Thats How I record the video gameplay videos I have on here. But The editing, encoding, and uploading to youtube I do on Mac. 98% of my uses goes to Mac
Yea, Startup and Shutdown times Were Slow with 10.5 Leopard, And Tiger was fast. 10.6 Snow Leopard Brings back the Speeds of Tiger, And maybe faster operations of some Tasks because of the 64Bit.
I use the Logitech Z-2300 speakers. They're THX certified and I got them from Tiger Direct Almost 4 years ago for $149.
My Camera sucks when it comes to soft sounds but it does well with loud ones. And My speaker rock. I only cleared up the sound when the song played since it was the most audible part.
Another thing is that I'm now in a much smaller room with a 10ft ceiling. So sound is much more reflective and with a slight echo, also making my Z-2300 Speakers sound beefier.
At first I ordered the Box Set on the 24th from Mac Mall. Sometime late on the 25th I read an article on Macdailynews saying that the $29 upgrade is in fact a full version and it can be directly installed on a wiped out Intel Mac. I then canceled the order I made on Mac Mall. And I ordered direct from Apple the $29 SL disc. It came on the 28th in The Afternoon the same day SL debuted . I am happy with it and everything works including Office 04, CS3 and my iLife 06 apps.

trainrider110 1 year ago
@trainrider110
Logic Board, Super Drive, LCD.
Apple Honored the repair.
pokeeto2 1 year ago
@trainrider110

C'mon I'm jealous here.!!!!
pokeeto2 1 year ago
@pokeeto2 well, all of that info is true and it actually made me laugh because you make jealousy sound funny lol but the overall design, same awkward square same black apple (talking about the monitor/overall comp) only difference is the mouse and keyboard so yep
metalmanazer 1 year ago
I may drop a 500GB HDD into it soon.
pokeeto2 1 year ago
@pokeeto2 you're a smart guy for doing tht and yeah i wanted to see something new you know like a new design maybe but apple works fast, but all they do is refresh. and im more of a desktop kinda guy i dont like laptops. i dont travel much so its not a problem for me
metalmanazer 1 year ago
All these intel iMacs much more complex (except for Ram replacement).
pokeeto2 1 year ago
@pokeeto2 yea i used to have a penryn macbook pro (late 2007 macbook pro) but yea my itouch took over and apple has to create their own intel based thing somehow. they did come through though with the new models theyre great and lol about the putting under the bed haha

You can not install Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard on an iMac G5. Snow Leopard is for Intel Macs Only!!!
The latest operating System you can install on a PPC G5 Mac is Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. Leopard is compatible for both PPC G4, G5 & Intel Macs.
Thats why your Snow Leopard installationt will not work...

I like this iMac. Mine's aluminum. I prefer the white one. :/
ethanswish123 2 years ago
@ethanswish123
(Thanks AppleCare!!) I plan to use mine for another 3 years if I can, or until it dies.
pokeeto2 2 years ago
i agree the white ones seem to be stronger and more versatile. my hard drive kicked the bucket two months after applecare and i had it replaced with a 1 tb. it runs great. planning on using it for another 2 or 3 years before i give it away. thing is a beast. the non glare display on them is nice. i made sure i got a matte display on my Macbook pro when i bought it on ebay. the 20 inch is nice, and I never notice any scratching like pokeeto2 says. mine is fine and is in a home office enviornment.

This iMac only has 160GB.
pokeeto2 2 years ago
I cant see if you already got an answer to your question
How to clone a hard drive:
1. Initialise the new drive with the correct partition table (choose Partition in the disk utility, then 1 Partition, next Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and under Options the GUID Partition Table).
2. Use the disk utilitys function Restore to clone the Mac OS X partition.
3. Use WinClone to copy the Windows system onto a newly created Boot Camp partition.
2.

Is it possible to get leopard on the iMac g5 with only 1gb of ram?? Straigt from tiger to leopard??
540sk8er 2 years ago
I think U should get more ram. Leopard will work but as soon as you have a few open apps, u will quickly run low and it will slow down. I have a 1.25GHz Mac Mini G4 with 1GB. After bootup, it has about 522mb free. Open Firefox, iTunes, iMovie and before u know it, I suddenly have about 45MB left and the system slows down.
Leopard does use up more Ram than Tiger. I think your G5 uses PC3200 Ram @ 400MHz. a 1GB Stick is about $35. I'm almost sure yours has Two 512MB sticks.
pokeeto2 2 years ago
Snow leopard is intel only

How'd you get 3GB ram into it?
Apple says the maximum is 2GB
BarricadeSlade 2 years ago
Well for this generation iMac, It's always been specified that it supports 3gb of ram. I think I've heard you can go beyond 3GB ( Let say 4GB) but the system will not report it. What I don't know is if the system will use it.
I can safely say that you're good with 3GB RAM, the system does use and report it. I have One 2GB and a 1GB stick. After boot, it reports about 2.5GB free ram. Originally it came with Two 512MB sticks totaling 1GB of Ram which was hardly enough even with Tiger 10.4.

@BarricadeSlade Not exactly. Windows 7 taskbar is basically old Windows taskbar with larger icons.
darthirakli 1 year ago
@BarricadeSlade I'm on a Mac right now, and I'm gonna have to say that Windows 7's new taskbar is much, much better than the dock. It may have been inspired by the dock, but they definitely improved on it. It's not just a rip off.
SalientK 1 year ago
@SalientK
I haven't tried Win 7, only dealt with Vista on cousins pc's.
I can't say anything about Win7 but ever since snow leopard came out, I never had to access my programs through the Hard Disc icon ( Finder ) anymore. I Access everything through the dock. I only go the old way to quickView stuff, and it's not all often.
pokeeto2 1 year ago
@pokeeto2 The Dock works as a decent app launcher, but it is very subpar in window management in my opinion. The Windows 7 superbar handles app both launching and window management very well by comparison. Although Exposé on the Mac really does help the situation, and the trackpad initiation is very convenient. Still, between the new taskbar and the dock, the taskbar just wins this for me. Anyway, my point was just that it's not just some cheap knockoff of the dock; it really is useful.
SalientK 1 year ago
@SalientK
It's half assed but it works.
pokeeto2 1 year ago
@pokeeto2 I actually haven't used or even activated spaces yet, but I used a similar program on certain Linux distros before. It really does come in handy, although I never really find myself needing more than maybe two or three desktops max. I think I'll try it out now, actually.
And I used to have Rocket Dock on Windows XP and Vista, haha. Windows 7 kind of made that program superfluous now, though, obviously. :P
SalientK 1 year ago
@BarricadeSlade
How...? I've used xp, vista, and seven, and they ALL had the quick launch, which is what I'm sure you're talking about. I can't speak on behalf of the earlier OSes though. And if you want to see some copying, take a good look at ubuntu. Copies EVERYTHING from either OS x or windows.

Sorry MacTards But Mac osx 10.6 snow leapord Sucked It's Boot Time is 72 secs
Where in Windows 7 34 secs
iboxful 2 years ago
Actually, you're the Wintard for not following the Title, and the Description. You will not find any Windows, Mac or Linux computer that will startup fresh for the first time after just installing the OS in 34 Seconds. Especially when loading setup Assistant or in your case, that Merlin $h!t if Microsoft still uses that theme.
After this boot. My iMac starts up in about the same 34 seconds without my EXT HDD connected which does add 10 seconds if it is connected.

I then canceled the order I made on Mac Mall. And I ordered direct from Apple the $29 SL disc. It came on the 28th in The Afternoon the same day SL debuted . I am happy with it and everything works including Office 04, CS3 and my iLife 06 apps.
