@crapatitus The music is the overture from A Midsummer Night's Dream by Mendelssohn.
I originally used music from Kill Bill (!) but there's been such a tightening up of copyright issues, even for home-made videos, that I had to change it using the YouTube soundtrack swap scheme. Luckily, I really like this one.
Alfonsina, the squirrel my husband and I feed, loves peanuts and sunflower seeds. Every time we leave fruit, she never takes it, though. She does like bread and pizza crusts, but we're not sure if she should eat processed food.
Yes, I think as a general rule wild animals should be kept as far away from processed food as possible. But then I think that humans should give it a wide berth, too. The squirrels in Regents Park, London, are enormous due to the large amounts of rubbish fed to them.
Last autumn I went to Hampstead heath and collected as many acorns as I could fit into my pockets and bag along with fallen bits of oak twig. The squirrels LOVED them.
Did you see the squirrel/cat wars video? I have to film the Next Generation - her three adult grandchildren who hang around. One of them is now brave enough to take a peanut off a stick.
i have a pet squirill, i feed it cheese, crutons, popcorn straight from da bag, nachos old pizza, and he luvs it, i also throw my squirill (it fles), it hates me now =)
do you know that the greys are killing off the reds in england. the reds only sanctuary is in scotland where conservationists have to kill off encrouching grey squirrels.
I just read that peanuts contain an enzyme that inhibits the metabolism of Vitamin D. So instead of giving them rickets, I'm switching to corn/maize based hamster food. And walnuts. Spoilt critters!
Correction: peanuts contain phosphorous which inhibits the absorbtion of calcium, so young squirrels fed largely on peanuts will develop rickets. Same with sweet preserved fruit like sultanas and raisins.
Best food: wheat and maize (like muesli and bird food) plus nuts from trees like hazel, chestnut and walnut.
Carrots, cucumber, melon, sausage and even good old cheddar is what squirrels here love to bits. I also feed them peas and strawberries during summers when i know the product is domestic :D
Thanks, Anon. She nicked an avocado once - left a green trail of skin and flesh all the way down the steps. And mangoes that are on the turn they like a little but usually don't finish it - too big, I assume.
I found a Portuguese shop that sells walnuts relatively cheap and they love those.
Yeah I've been to that one!!! Also when we went to see the white house there were squirrels all over the front lawn right by the fence waiting for people to give them food lol
oh pardon haha "here" meaning the UC Berkeley campus, just a little bit east of San Francisco (but I suppose it's because on college campuses, students feed the squirrels, which contributes to their plumpness)
Right, im a nature lover, but squirrels..? theyre just fucking rats with fuzzy tails! honestly, i ask you to take the fuzzy tail off the animal in this vid and you'll see past the cuteness, they eat flesh and are mostly vicious
Sadly, there are only a few pockets of red squirrels left - in Scotland, I think. Steps are taken to cull and control grey squirrels where they threaten the reds.
Oh, this one is another classic!!! I love how you do the cuts and edits so perfectly! You're right, she is a star! But you are the real genious in capturing their antics so charmingly and entertainingly! I'm looking forward to seeing ALL of your videos! : ))

Thanks for coming back, Jo. Only one or two squirrels out the back at the moment. Their peanuts seem to be taken by jackdaws and magpies.

We won't feed her processed food anymore, then, although I have to say I've seen her carrying fries and other tidbits she finds on the road.
There are plenty of acorns around here, but Alfonsina still demands her sunflower seeds!
Thank you so much for the advice, MadameMiaow :)

Hmmm I didn't know that. Well I usually just give them unbuttered popcorn b/c they look really funny eating it lol. Gotta keep the critters healthy!

There are colonies of reds in Kent and in one or two other counties. Also a healthy number still remain on Brown Sea Island off Dorset :)
