Watched this many times as a child, teenager and now with my kids and will still watch it and watch it again and again. Lets me escape to my child hood for that little while...
i do love this scene, but dick does have strings attached to him. it's still impressive, but i'd say mainly because of how fantastic of an actor he is. there are those who can act, and those who can sing, and those who can dance, and then there's dick van dyke.
yes, all the dancing is real it must be soooo hard to sing and be stiff. Also the way dick got up out of the box. These people were amazing dancers and singers and most people now take them for granted.
I watch this movie so many times and I still find something i didnt notice before. Just notice her pushing him into the mirror for getting off track. lol. I just love this movie and this part.
@CanadianWarMachine He's apparently still doing physical comedy: "While I was in L.A. with the stage version of "Mary Poppins" almost two years ago, Dick Van Dyke appeared on stage in a one-night-only cameo walk-on as a superannuated banker, a role he had played in the movie but is finally actually old enough for. He can still do physical comedy even in his 80s... the audience ate it up!"
@hulkhogan503 cuz he didn't know what he looked like in the makeup and costume and it caught him off guard for a sec there.... until she hit him in the head.
I remember being a kid watching this at the drive-in. You'd been sitting there for what felt like 10 hours and seen every imaginable flight of fancy on earth both grim and gorgeous...then all of a sudden this delicate, beautiful, subtle moment came along and it was like the world froze for a few minutes and it was heaven...for reasons I STILL don't understand. :) Thanks for posting!
Gosh when I first saw this movie as a kid and saw the beautiful Sally Ann Howes for the first time, I started feeling all funny in my special place LOL
@PhantomoftheOperaOG By Ahhhh no, bad advice for THAT guy brother! I would NOT recomend THIS movie to HIM!! I kinde of get the notion that Rambo, or something more along THAT line, would be more suitable for THAT fellow there !
@kungfoolai I have a special place for this one thank you, grew up with it, even though I didn't understand it until I got older. You want to talk about most classics sucking, look at the classic books.
@drewqq I find it funny how before you replied to my comment, you went on my profile to find anything that would offend me, then you went back to my comment and wrote that! Geez, we dont have to get personal!
btw, im not American so classic American films dont appeal to me, especially musicals!..
@kungfoolai I went to your profile to see what kind of person would have such a strong reaction to a children's film. Sorry if your feelings were hurt, and you don't have to be American to like an American classic. One of my favorite films from my childhood is La Ballon Rouge (the Red Balloon) which is a classic French Children's film. But still, apologies if I hurt your feelings. It was just a joke.
Best scene in the movie. Pure movie magic that works even alone without any context from the rest of the movie.
Aside: and as others have pointed out, the Doll in a Music Box would be an ingenious work of art. Unlikely, but perhaps possible. ....The Dick Van Dyke puppet character, however, would've been an achievement in the field of artificial intelligence on such a level as to put anything coming out of Skynet to shame.
Hate me if you want, but I love this movie. However, and this you may disagree with me here, I always got bored watching the first hour or so before the Baron makes his appearance, so I'd fastforward to when Dick starts to tell the story to the kids. I love this part of the movie so much, all the characters are great. It's just the first half, that bores me so.
@ballet288 she was acting like a doll so they could get into the palace unnoticed as the real people they were to save the children that had been brought there by the child snatcher
The fact that no one's said that they've seen/heard of this movie when I asked makes it that much more special. This was the movie that I practically watched every day as a child <3
Definitely My Favourite Scene. She Must Have Been So Numb From Standing There! She's Such A Beautiful Actress, And Amazing Singer And Extremely Talented For Remembering All Of That(:

Gert Frobe (here playing Baron Bomburst) also played Auric GOLDFINGER in the Bond movie of the same name. Both movies made legends of the cars they used too.
saw it for the first time last week.. im 33 and i love this performance.. i think this is where "The Robot" moves first came to be ^^ *sings* Domo Aregato Mr. Roboto lol
To think she was able to memorize all those moves, and stand real still while waiting to be wound up again, and with one of her feet tilted diagonally.
She's convincing as a mechanical doll, but Dick Van Dyke is too real and human in his movements how can he fool those people ? lol...he is acting too much like his clown like comedian self that audiences were used to. He was great at physical stunts but he didn't convince as a doll the way Sally Howes did
She really did look and act as if she was a mechanical doll; this is perfection! Dick though was lousy and did not act like a toy...he was way too much like his actual self!!! LOL
