my hard disk "chirps" like birds in the distance outside or a squeaky wheel. It does this through my computer's soundcard whenever I click on a blank space in a game or on the windows desktop. It is a new harddrive(array) too, Two Raptors and one WD black. I hope my Power supply isn't the culprit.
hey, cool vid! could you tell me where i have to plug the audio wires on my hdd? i have a spare WD800JB - you can pm me and i send you a photo of the hdd =) thanks in advance!
okay, i just finished it and works perfectly! its not as loud as yours,i didiit with your exact HDD but a bit older, 236 mb..... i still cant understand how it makes sound.
Hey . Why Yours Is So Loud ? I Was So Intrested That I Made One Of My Own . But The Head Always Stuck At The Magnet . What Step Did I Miss ? Can You Please Help Me ?
Nice tutorial, I bought some new F1 Spinpoints so my crappy old maxtor's are going to get a special treatment. Thanks mate, it actually looks pretty as well!
The motion of the arm going back and forth creates vibrations which are picked up by the human ear as sound. just like a normal speaker is a cone shape bouncing in and out due to a magnet pushing and pulling it.
@fladdy45 sound are just vibrations in the air. The arm is te only moving part in the hdd exept for the disk itself, which wasnt spinning. If nothing mives, then you wont have sound
lol...i did this project a while back...I had a very low frequency bass tester on a cd, so I hooked it up to my amp in my truck...2000w of sheer kicker wasn't a bright idea...that arm flew off so fast, I found it a couple days later stuck into the side of my garage...
good job... but im just interested i know that the motor spinning the disk is quite fast... is it easy to connect? do i need control circuits or whatever?
When you test the connections with the motherboard speaker how did you get it to play so loud? i have to turn my volume way up on my hi-fi set till like 57% before i can get that volume level.
lol you could make it look like a old record player :D find where the sound is coming from make a cone and attach it thats how they did it during the 1910's-1920's
That's pretty cool. I've always wanted to mess around with an old hard drive, but all my old hard drives WORK. Even though my oldest is only 1.2GB, I don't want to wreck a working hard drive. Oh well, I have a 4GB Fujitsu with all kinds of bad sectors, maybe I'll hack that one:)
The song is called 'Bass, I Love You' by 'Bassotronics' i think. (Thats the one i used when testing it out with my laptop). Before the laptop came in it was all from the radio.

Yo dawg, I heard you made a speaker out of a hard drive.
So I'm listening to you make a speaker out of a hard drive with a speaker made out of a hard drive.
(I made one too, and I have it hooked up to my computer.)

@rudi2122 Your amplified Audio signal controlls the movement of the head. So it oscillates and excites the air around it. It's like a normal speaker.

Make sure that the reader arm doesnt move, so tight it very fast, maybe solder it.
