My iPad has 38,000 proximity sensors and 12,000 accelerometers so when it detects that it is moving at high speeds near the ground and is about to break 28,000,000 nano rockets boost it up and gently set it down on the nearest desk or table to prevent such a thing. But still no flash...
The screen is actually VERY tough... you have to strike it in "just" the right way to have it break. Drop it onto carpet or anything with ANY kind of give and its usually just fine. Note that, here, they dropped it onto a bare concrete floor, the deceleration there was probably in excess of 100G.
I've dropped mine 2 times, about 4 feet to our office floors, which are thinly carpetted + underlay. Not a single scratch.
Hey guys... how many takes did this take before it actually smashed? :)
@ChmarrCheetah First take. This is the only time we tried to break one purposely. The idea was to drop it from a short distance, if it did not break then drop it from a greater distance until it broke. But it broke the first time.
All I can tell you is that we receive these broken every single day :)
@ChmarrCheetah You've been lucky... Having been involved with Tablet PCs for 10 years I can tell you that broken screens are very common. Tablets get carried much more than laptops. If you have already dropped yours twice it's only a matter of time before you need to call these guys for a new screen.
It's all about the distibution of the shock, sometimes you get away with it.. iPad most likely uses standard hardened glass, not particularly stong. Corning Gorilla Glass would not break though.
@ChmarrCheetah Additionally, that's not technically the "screen" that cracked, as most people mean the LCD when they say "screen". The LCD is protected and is fully intact after this impact (ON TO CONCRETE). What is broken is the input device, the digitizer, which senses the touch inputs. This piece is still a little pricey, at around $75, but still not that expensive in the event that it breaks. PS: the iPad is an expensive piece of kit, treat it with respect and it won't take falls!
Is there a noticeable difference between a new iPad and an iPad that has had it's glass/digitizer replaced?

@ChmarrCheetah deceleration isn't a word, even if there isn't a red squiggly line under it.

@DylanThomas1993
Deceleration is a word, but it's the same as Accelerating isn't it? lol Sorry I'm starting to learn this now and had to comment.
