I recently placed my clown costume into storage to let it be a reminder of the past. Now I can't stop laughing because everywhere I look, I see a circus. It's nice to be in the real world.
But they do laugh. they laugh at the other costumes, at the colors the adornment, the funny hats that other clowns wear, they mock the noses then secretly tremble in fear that another costume part will become popular and adopted into their tradition.
Fascinating insight. I have always thought they didn't really believed it, they are merely trying to justify why they ever did. When we laugh, which I don't do lol. They must feel insecure about themselves, better to ditch it all together rather than continue, but unfortunately their life is based on their faith, friends, family, their lifestyle. To give this up is not easy, thus they continue their merry way until they feel fooled again, then the cycle happens again.
may I sample sound from this video? of course i will credit you when I put the video up and direct people to your channel in the description bar. Some great points in this video that have really stuck with me.
is that a joint your smoking??? it must be, because your the clown, the fact that you took the time to make this ridiculous video.means that you would rather waste your life making mindless garbage for youtube fame than spend your time doing something constructive. you my friend, are wearing the clown coustume....
I wore a clown's costume as a kid. I even tried to convert my neighbours to my ludicracy... thankfully I grew into my own person, began thinking for myself and evolved...
Dude, I fucking love this shit! Your capability to analyze a situation is something I have deeply respect! The way you are able to express this same process of thinking is even more incredible! As an intellectual person I crave for this at times! Fucking awesome dude!
After a quick google I referred someone to this video. I thought I recalled it being Dan Dennett or Sam Harris that had said something about "When you laugh at someone religious they always seem to know why..."
This guy works “professionally” on the same “torture in the grave” as the other “assholist” that has supplied you with material for some of the best comedy we have enjoyed in the last years.
This guy warns us “it not a fairy tale, its real”.
If you search on Internet, this guy has had problems with the authority and they are trying hard to keep him out of the country.
@philhellenes Well, I know this is 2 months too late (what can I say, I've only discovered your channel a week ago), for more 'childish' fun, turn on the subtitles.
Err, to elaborate; The thought that your judgment is right doesn't even enter their head. It's straight to them judging your character and thinking you've only thought it was laughable because you're blind to the truth for one reason or another. It's a thick wall, my friend.
@VitriolicAC Yep, a very very thick wall! They will make 1+1 into 5 if necessary.. Its not about logic for them.. And its not just that religion works your mind in a way that people cannot think straight, but its also the fact that the one consistent thing I came to meet with every religious person, is that they lack general knowledge/capabilities to obtain knowledge... Try it, try some other subject and see how they will respond in an intellectual inferior way.. Doesn't matter what subject...
They DO laugh -at other people's clown costumes, and that's one of the most baffling things about the religious. The average Protestant or Muslim, for instance, can immediately point out why Scientology and Mormonism are ridiculous, but they can't (or won't) do the same when it comes to their own goofy beliefs.
No, they don't ask because they already know why we are laughing. They know anyone who laughs in their face is mocking their position, so there's no need to ask. Some people wear clown costumes because they do actually think they fit nice and look good. Just because your sense of 'fashion' is different doesn't give you a right to mock. That's why they get angry. I'm an atheist too. But I'm mature enough to respect the many very intelligent and thoughtful people who do lead a different life.
That explains everything... I always wondered why I was so bothered by clowns! Excelent vid though I am not as sure as philhellenes that they all know why we laugh. The great trick to religion, all religion, is the subversion of reason which is also why they can't be bothered to think critically of their own faith, or even entertain the corollary.
Duh, isn't it obvious that a Theist already knows why you're laughing. Thanks for the attempt at a theatrical buildup, but the bottom line is, the reason why Theists don't ask; "Why are you laughing?", is BECAUSE THEY ALREADY KNOW WHY.
The desperate non-hope you have for 'eternality' is clearly written all over the eyes of those who laugh.
I deconverted several years ago. One main reason that brought that about was having deeply sdudied scripture for the 1st time. If that doesn't convince you we have believed in a Bi Polar, evil deity, I don't know what would.
One of his favorite things in the world was killing...and had a penchant for killing children! Never could understand that. But then, how does 1 understand a Supernatural Psychopath?
I can assure U that no delusions about eternity. What will be will be.
@Cootabux Your problem begins with the delusion you 'deeply sdudied scripture'. Yeah, the bottom line is, if you don't like the God of the Bible, He will destroy you. Sounds like U.S. foreign policy. No? I assume you feel the same way about abortionists making tons of money off abortions. NO? So what's the difference if they're a couple of years old? I'm sorry you view humanity so important. We really aren't that special that God should automatically love us. Didn't you understand the flood?
@Cootabux You 'in depth study of scripture' is a delusion because it was neither 'in depth' nor 'a study'. If you read the Bible 'in depth' you would know that God is autonomous and not bound by any law. Not believing the God of the Bible is one thing, but misquoting the Bible as characterizing Him a certain, which it doesn't, is talking out your ass and making a specious argument. So, why not kill 1yr, old babies? Why are they any different from an 81/2 month old unborn?
In other words, it would have to coincide with your understanding? And u don't know what I know, Mr. Clown!
Sorry to burst that buble but I'll tell you what I have discovered about Yahweh/jesus! But 1st we have to enter even more into delusion. We have to pretend it was real & not a product of Hebrew Barbarianas!
So what we find is a god, no entire religion, that was adopted (stolen) from the Canaanites, who practically taught them everything they knew.
Of course after the Hebrews changed their supreme god El Shaddai to Yahweh, who happened to have been 1 of El's sons. They tried to destroy the evidence by wiping everything breathing member of the Canaanites off the map, which was very flat & square at that time.
The Hebrews were brazen though. They didn't stop there. They gave Yahweh El's consort (wife), Asherah! Still with me Sparky?
They wiped out every Canaanite, even their goldfish, but of course the Hebrews had no idea
that in the distant future the Ugaritic Texts would be found and the whole scam would be exposed.
That was the 1st part. The reason I got into it was to show how all the Pantheons borrowed from each other. The Elohims were basically the same, they just changed the names of their gods to fit their culture. Also, all Elohims (Divine Council) were plural. Israel was the only ones to change theirs to Mono.
Now, how do we know Yahweh wasn't a god? Bcuz we saw how Yahweh was 1 of 70
Jump ahead...The Hebrews systematically demonized Yahweh's brothers; Allah, Mot, Yam, Baal & of course, Asherah his fathers consort!
Got the picture so far?
Another way we know the Yahweh character was BS is the more obvious & well known way.... by observing his "warm & loving" disposition! Nothing he liked better than killing women, children....oh btw, u mentioned what's the diff. between 1 yr. & 8 1/2 mo. unborn...nothing to Yahweh!
Yahweh had no problem ordering his men 2 "rip the babies from their mother's wombs."
This is Yahweh, an old volcano god...a warrior from way back. Genocide came easy 2 him. Remember, he "was" a vengeful & jealous god who was quick 2 anger! (Curious emotions 4 a ghost)...not 2 mention that he liked the aroma of burnt offerings!!
There's your god in all his murderous, psychotic glory! But even he can't surpass jesus in evil deeds. One word..."Hell!" It's the most evil of deeds!
@Cootabux You're a babbling fool. The U.S. is now doing to Iragi's and Afghans what the Israelites did to the Canannites. Is it the God of the U.S. doing it, or, is it the people of the U.S.? Who is worse: The God of the Bible, or Mankind all by himself?
Listen to yourself!! And U have the fuckin nerve to call me a fool? U don't even have a good grasp of reality! U keep bring politics & abortions into the story of the biblical gods!
No question god is far worse! This would be especially true if he did in fact create us in his image! That means we carry his genes. No wonder we love killing so much! I'm guilty too! I killed in Vietnam & I've killed in my own land. I'm above that shit now tho, & that's what counts!
@Cootabux I have the nerve to call you a 'babbling fool' because you babble for 5 comment boxes and don't even address the fucking issue I've raised. Even your last comment shows you smoked too much grass in Viet Nam to be able to think outside the box of your drooling mad dog atheist paradigm. The point I've made is that secular & atheist groups are JUST AS murderous as the religious. Which means, God, or, no God, human beings are a fucked up species and you're a perfect fucking example.
People who dont want their beliefs laughed at shouldnt have such funny beliefs. HAAUUUUAA HHHAWWUUAA !!!
Faith (wishing it were true) is essential for believing in absurdities !!!
Delusional psychotic religious people NEED to be laughed at, it gives them the oppurtunity to remember (even for just an instant) that they are living in fantasy land, telecommunicating with imaginary friends, and revering imaginary places.
That'a all do true! When I was a Xuan, I can remember going thru those mental exercises of blocking out rational conversation. It evolved into hard core denial! It's the only way I could hold onto such insane beliefs. If I stopped to think about the big questions...I was in trouble! Eventually, that's what happened. Critical thinking could not be held back any longer. When this happens, it's so easy to see the absurdity of faith (Hope), which is just wishful thinking!
@xtremerandomness >>> obviously didn't watch the fucking video. but whatever I don't really care. Faith doesn't require a god. A god does require faith. end of story. So sorry, here's your lovely parting gift!
@xtremerandomness I WAS out! Like I said I don't give a fuck! I'm not here to train every monkey how to think. Stop calling me back here then! I said good day sir!!!
@xtremerandomness ROFL I'm sure anyone who comes along and reads this conversation will come to the same conclusion. Well done, buddy. You tell that guy in the mirror he's a WINNER lol. Whatever, like I said I don't give a fuck.
@textingname Wow, you're really grasping at straws if you're suggesting I'm referring to your first comment. No, of course I wasn't replying to the one in which you implied you just HAD to reply.
@xtremerandomness K whatever. you've been shut down already. You're like the guy who just keeps sitting at the drive through window even though he already got his burger!
Why would *you* keep replying?? Hm OH YEAH it's because you're not so high and mighty over us silly humans and our egos after all! Now reply again! and keep doing it with the goal of getting the last word, making your hypocrisy even MORE clear than it was. Bury yourself all you want. It's fun to watch! Now REPLY STUPID HUMAN!
>>Claims victory on behalf of someone else who claimed victory by being more offensive rather than making valid point.
>>Claims hypocrisy without any evidence for when I said I had the moral high-ground.
In fact, I'm actually quite enjoying baiting you like this. I even told you, yet you'll still reply (having said you were out a few posts ago). I'm not out, this is fun :)
Right right,... in the comment after I mention that *I* am toying with *you* you go and try to flip it around. Nice try, but stop copying me in an attempt to salvage your stupid angle. I'm not the one pretending to be above the idea of having an ego. Oooh you're baiting me! rofl. If you couldn't find the valid point(s) in anything this guy or I said, it's extra hilarious that you think you have some kind of upper hand. **watches intently** So? What are you going to pull out of your ass next?
You people are fucking hilarious to watch. You're as bigoted and closed to criticism as your religious counterparts, it seems. Rather than ignoring the evidence, you argue logically or strawman for a bit, then just sit back and claim victory on nothing.
Open mind? Try some philosophy and then you'll know what it means.
@textingname Saying "If you couldn't find the valid point(s) in anything this guy or I said, it's extra hilarious" implies that I didn't understand your point. That's just arrogance :)
You teenage(-like) atheists are pathetic in your reasoning when it gets to anything other than being opposed to fundamentalists. As soon as some agnostic arguments hit you, you just get uber-defensive.
How arrogant to claim we know so much of the world having observed so little.
@xtremerandomness ROFL!!!!! I gave a link to my video in my first comment. *THAT* was the video that I was asking if you watched when you said yes. YOU'RE TALKING TO AN AGNOSTIC, FUCKTARD!! LOLOLOL I laid out exactly why in my aforementioned video. That egg is going to drip down onto your shirt if you don't get a rag, idiot. Checkmate! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D
@textingname I had watched it. However, the current impression you're giving is that of supporting philhellenes with his video - contradiction much, unless you're claiming I've been owned by you claiming that you owned me, which is just babyish.
@xtremerandomness This video takes issue with organized religion and a convicted belief in a god. What about that as an agnostic am I not allowed to agree with? hmm? Blatant flaws claims blah blah. I'm telling you you're being a dickhead over a simple misunderstanding! Where the fuck does the argument go from that?
Just shut up already lol. Paint me out however you want, you are WRONG. WRONG! Do you understand that word?
@textingname You're not allowed to agree that he beat me on the issue of faith - if you were a true agnostic you'd understand such concepts of naturalism. Me being the dickhead - I think you'll find you've just declared yourself the "winner" since the beginning, and repeatedly telling me that you're leaving, that I should shut up and that you're right and I'm wrong doesn't make your case stronger.
@xtremerandomness lol I said I'm leaving once. Do you honestly think I care if I convince some random jerkoff on the internet of my beliefs? I flat out told you I'm just having fun with you. If you don't want to realize how wrong you are, it makes no difference in the real word. Antagonistic morons like you are EVERYWHERE and fixing you one at a time through internet commenting would be a monumental task. Pick apart that comment! Bark bark!
@textingname btw the video of mine I asked if you watched? yeah if you had watched it, you'd see that I'm behind Science! Do you understand the tenets of Methodological naturalism? I guess if you did, and you watched the video, you'd realize what a dumbass you are. All I said was that I addresses the issue of faith in my video. Go back and read it. Woof, mother fucker. :)
>> Insults then calls antagonistic, then insults again.
>> Makes arrogant claim whilst being hypocritical.
>> Thinks naturalism supports science (LOL).
>> Becomes obsessed with the idea of baiting.
Obvious ignorance and superiority complex?
Oh, and your sort of agnosticism is absolutely pathetic anyway - it's not based on being non-judgemental about how likely things are because we can't be sure at all on any of that, it's the "both are crap" one, which is just a joke.
You make a strong case (and I'm inclined to agree). However, your argument makes the assumption that only that that is intuitively obvious must be true. I agree that religion makes absurd claims, but the ideas of evolution and the Big Bang were surely laughed at by the masses originally, and those proposing would have been offended - they knew why the others laughed, and were offended that they weren't taken seriously, not because they knew deep down that they were in denial or embarrassed.
@xtremerandomness - Do you see anyone genuinely laughing at the big bang. Please point me to ONE video where you see GENUINE laughter on the subject. Some fake it, but it shows. Same with evolution. I have never seen REAL laughter on the subject. However, if I ever do I will ask why the person is laughing (genuine ignorance is not offensive to me) and what statement of mine triggered it. Then I will explain the reasoning and evidence behind it. If they give me the time, they won't be laughing.
Do I see? No. Would I when it was originally proposed? Yes.
Please reread what I said.
Also, you may not find genuine ignorance offensive, and neither do I, but many do. I made the point that it is offensive to not be taken seriously, not that they would be offended by the ignorance of the laughing.
@xtremerandomness I knew you were talking about when the ideas were originally proposed, but I see little significant difference between a learned scientist of the 1850s hearing Darwin's ideas for the first time and the home schooled creationist kid hearing them for the first time, at least in terms of a potential humorous reaction. The laughter is false, forced, adversarial (offensive in the "military" sense). I'm not saying there are not exceptions, but they are rare.
@philhellenes I wasn't talking about a learned scientist hearing them, I was talking about the majority hearing them. They would have been (incorrectly) deriding them as false and ridiculous, and would have found it hilarious that anyone at all would be proposing them.
Now you would claim that you are not uneducated or whatever, but the point is that just because one group finds it ridiculous does not make it so, and it is unfair to jump to conclusions on their reaction.
@xtremerandomness "but the point is that just because one group finds it ridiculous does not make it so" If that IS your point, we agree. But this is more of an observation than a conclusion. And the annoying fact remains, nobody ever genuinely laughed at you when you told them about evolution or the big bang. And when you laughed at a believers "beliefs", as you must have at some point, briefly perhaps, you were not asked WHY you were laughing. Am I right or wrong?
@philhellenes But then you jumped to the conclusion that this was because they were embarrassed or secretly knew they were wrong, which was the logical fallacy I pointed out. Hence my example about the Big Bang and evolution. Irrelevant of whether people laugh at me about it now, people would have found it ridiculous and humorous back then, even if incorrectly and would have laughed about it; the claimants would have been offended by being not taken seriously, not for being secretly wrong.
@xtremerandomness I do not think it is irrelevant that they don't laugh now. As for the past, I know of no record of anyone ever busting a gut about evolution. The word that most generally typifies the reaction to Darwin's ideas in Darwin's time was "outrage" or "shock". and, as I stated before, if they HAD genuinely laughed they would have been asked why, glad of the chance to explain further. You see nothing of any significance in this asymmetry. I see some significance in all asymmetries.
@philhellenes Please, stop with the "wiser than thou" endings to your comments.
You're right about outrage and shock, but the point is the feeling of ridiculousness people had to it. asymmetries are only significant when it is directly related to the topic at hand without adding in new factors. The education of those involved is irrelevant to my point, the time period is, the actual reaction is (the feeling is the same: ridiculous and untrue).
@xtremerandomness The asymmetrical reactions between religious believers being mocked and believers in science being mocked is indicative, in my opinion, of a different depth of clarity and confidence. You'll find the same thing in UFO believers, 911 truthers, scientologists. Same asymmetry, same cause, in my opinion. (Was that a "wiser than thou" ending? I have no idea what one of those is.)
@philhellenes That would be a very arrogant claim to make on behalf of science. It can be (very easily) argued that science is as much of a faith as Christianity due to the infinitesimal part of space-time we have observed logically means that we can have no certainty on the continuity of the laws of physics, or even logic. Semantics aside, many religious people are more vigorous than the true scientist due to the scientists healthy level of scepticism. I was just imitating "holier than thou".
@philhellenes It's called naturalism. For all practical intents and purposes we can assume science is correct. It is a faith nonetheless, as assumptions are made. Although by that logic EVERYTHING is a faith, which is technically true.
26 billion light years of an unknown sized universe in an unknown sized multiverse for around 10000 years out of 13.7 billion with an unknown amount either side in the multiverse. Great grounds for certainty.
@xtremerandomness I said "confidence", NOT "certainty". You accuse me of "strawmanning" then blatantly do it yourself. Also, I do not think nor have ever said that the physical laws in the multiverse are the same as this Universe (I'd bet my life against that actually). Also, when we look out 13 billion light years we see back in time 13 billion years so your "10000 years" becomes pure ignorance.
I was criticizing your confidence in your certainty if I read. Due to the infinitesimally small amount of knowledge we have garnered of what is and is not observable renders our usual methods of probability useless. Certainty is always useful, yet in this context it is not possible. You are confusing "certainty" with "certainty about the probabilities of things". The multiverse point is irrelevant. You are replying to a point I never made.
@philhellenes I didn't dance around your point, I showed your logic to be flawed in a more general context.
Your latest argument appears to be simply replying to something I never said, saying I'm strawmanning you (how?) and then talking about something totally useless to this debate (I know the laws of the multiverse are different to the universe... your point?) You are correct that we observe the past. However, we miss the "present" in those places. So as much is lost as is gained.
@xtremerandomness If science is a faith, why does the scientific community continually seek to disprove it, for that is the scientic method. It takes no faith to believe in gravity because we all see it and feel it, there is evidence. Same for all science, and when there is no evidence the seeking is in the disproving not the faithful believing.
@xtremerandomness - Probability is the core of science. By claiming it as useless in this context is to simultaneously (albeit inadvertently) claim that certainty (the only alternative to probability) is useful in other contexts. You don't know when to stop it seems to me.
@philhellenes I was also criticizing our logic in our certainty of the continuity of events in space-time. You don't seem to have addressed this point other than providing (seemingly) vast examples of our measurements in unknown sized multiverse. As soon as infinities or uncertainties are involved, we cannot HAVE any probabilities, much less trust them.
@xtremerandomness You accuse me of being probabilistic AND certain??? Enough. You object to my observation in the video. I answer your objections. We dance a little, trying to identify the cause of disagreement. You move to science. I show your ignorance. You strawman. You move your points after you lose confidence in them. If you landed a glove on me I didn't feel it. My knuckles feel sore and your face looks a mess. I'll let the readers judge the fight.
@philhellenes You are being probabilistic AND certain. Hence my criticism. My ignorance in science? You are an extremely arrogant and unpleasant man, it seems. You obviously have no knowledge in philosophy, you can't seem to understand that "faith" is impossible to escape from (assumptions = faith), you accuse me of hypocrisy without providing examples. Attempt to defeat my points with the exact thing I just showed to be useless. Then you claim victory. What a fucking joke.
@philhellenes I am not so sure they know why we are laughing.I believe most of them really believe that they know something the rest of us do not. I enjoy your vids!
You are correct on the confidence of some religious people, and I'm sure you're correct in a few cases, but there are so many examples where this just simply is not the case.
@xtremerandomness To add to that, your point is entirely ad hominem, which was another point I was making with that original example, but didn't sum up quite so concisely.
@philhellenes You're setting my point up as a strawman, which is as bad as those people you criticize themselves. You're also very aggressive in your argument style, which does nothing to convince people that you're making a valid point.
@AcheronEternal You believe in Hell??? And THEN you say, "nothing in science contradicts my religious beliefs..." And THEN you talk about "intellectual discussion".
As I'm sure others have said in the comments before me, understanding another person's viewpoint and not agreeing with it is not the same as being ashamed of your own beliefs. The fact that there is a large number of people who go against organized religion is not unknown. The majority of people who "know why you laugh" understand your point of view, even if they disagree with it. It's a pretty hefty claim to make that all religious people are ashamed with their beliefs.
PhilHellenes I have to say this video was great and you make an awesome point. Just looking at the comments on your video you can see some people who seem to be upset or flabbergasted (hard to tell with text only) at this video. I'm not advocating giving religious people a hard time just because of their beliefs, they should believe whatever they want to, jesus, mohammed, almighty squirrel god, whatever. Just don't try to give me a hard time that I cannot have faith in a zombie carpenter.
@tmy6294 But openly laughing in the face of religious people is totally fine then? I'm not an outraged Christian, but I hate the double standards of Religious people and Non-Religious people.
@Javvier7 I never stated I think athiests or people of faith should be intentionally going out of their way to belittle those with a different belief. However if you know on my door or solicit me with your beliefs I am within my right to call you out on it. If you feel bad for it then maybe you should be doing a little self reflection. If my actions can make you question your belief then you are very weak minded.
sigh, I'm not going to try to convince you who appear convinced of your superiority. If you would argue with me with an open mind, we might each gain new insight. But, if you maintain that you are right, and anyone else's view is wrong then there is little you could benefit from any kind of intelligent discussion.
@AcheronEternal If you simply believe there MIGHT be a god, I have absolutely no reason to feel superior in ANY way at all. BUT, if you believe any of the organised religions in this world, if you believe one word written came from a god, I think you are delusional. I see you speak with certainty ("this wondrous universe created by god" - not much doubt THERE), another sign of delusion, and/or ignorance. I do not feel superior to a delusional person, just luckier.
Or perhaps I'm open minded? I see science as a way of looking at this wondrous universe created by god. The more science reveals, the more amazed by it all I am.
@AcheronEternal You can't cherry-pick your facts like that. Science looks at the universe objectively, not romantically, and it doesn't leave room for divine power of any sort. You can put your trust in logical analysis or you can put it in religion; the whole idea of "faith" rejects skepticism entirely, so there's no middle ground.
This video is really stupid. I don't get angry when someone laughs at my religion. I don't question why they laugh, because I understand they do not share my belief. That is fine by me. But, that hardly means I'm embarrassed.
If you spend enough time thinking about life, the universe, and everything, a creator looks more and more plausible the longer you think about it.
@AcheronEternal "If you spend enough time thinking about life, the universe, and everything, a creator looks more and more plausible the longer you think about it."
To you, maybe. In fact, you can just check the map and see how the most religious coutries are underdeveloped and the people have, regrettably, a very poor education. The more you think, the less you believe. That is a fact.
I randomly stumbled on this video, just want to say, well said my man. I do wish more people would use their brain instead of believing nonsensical things. Then again, I do love to laugh.
Boy I was waaay off on the question bit. The very first thing out of my mouth would be to ask the person laughing whether or not they'd like a black eye.
Well, when I throw out controversial ideas.. people don't laugh, they don't challenge my ideas..they are dismissive on some bullshit point. I think I would love a good fight.
As for Christians, they know it's nuts. I often wonder what part of their psyche holds this information. There has to be a part of us that carries all knowledge about the universe, now whether that part of us communicates freely with the ego/persona, or not, is another matter.
"There has to be a part of us that carries all knowledge about the universe, now whether that part of us communicates freely with the ego/persona, or not, is another matter. "
Sorry - that is just mumbo-jumbo. It doesn't wash with me - our physical brains haven't got a clue about what's going on in the universe - that's how we know all religions are completely made up; as made up as if we asked a monkey to type out a book the size of The Bible and every word came close to matching up.
Well Jazzx, you are wrong on the most basic of points. Our brains know EVERYTHING about the Universe. What are you perceiving/interpreting the universe with, after all? There is no other perceptive tool, other than the mind, brain, psyche. Now, I cannot say absolutely whether brain=mind=psyche.
You present a false premise, then argue from that point.
@jazzx251 Sorry to butt in...but it might come from the myth that we only use ten percent of our brains and we have untapped potential. I'm not agreeing with anyone, I'm just stating an opinion.
You sir, are my hero

@FattyMcFox I think that was summed up by his final remarks about how they'd be laughing if they weren't wearing the clownsuit.

Fascinating insight. I have always thought they didn't really believed it, they are merely trying to justify why they ever did. When we laugh, which I don't do lol. Phil, I would just like to say great job on making your videos fairly welcoming to theists. I've noticed this and hope you continue like this.
It's always good to have someone around like CultofDusty though. :P Variety is nice.

Err, to elaborate; The thought that your judgment is right doesn't even enter their head. It's straight to them judging your character and thinking you've only thought it was laughable because you're blind to the truth for one reason or another. It's a thick wall, my friend.
VitriolicAC 1 year ago 4

I don't get why this sort of video doesn't destroy religion. I suppose it helps a lot, at least (just guessing).
LyriMetacurl 1 year ago

TroddinSod 1 year ago
@TroddinSod
Cootabux 1 year ago
@Cootabux Your problem begins with the delusion you 'deeply sdudied scripture'. Yeah, the bottom line is, if you don't like the God of the Bible, He will destroy you. Sounds like U.S. foreign policy. No? I assume you feel the same way about abortionists making tons of money off abortions. NO? So what's the difference if they're a couple of years old? I'm sorry you view humanity so important. We really aren't that special that God should automatically love us. Didn't you understand the flood?
TroddinSod 1 year ago
@TroddinSod
Why would my depth of study be a delusion, & what the fuck does it have to do with being similar to US policy? There r many wrongs in life.
Also we're not talking about the meaning of an age diff. & how that may or may not be relative. It's about the despicable acts of a cosmic psychopath!
God love us? No, just leave us the fuck alone & get off that judgement BS! Any judge who violates his own laws, has no business judging anyone!
Flood? What flood? U mean no ones told u yet?
Cootabux 1 year ago
@Cootabux You 'in depth study of scripture' is a delusion because it was neither 'in depth' nor 'a study'. If you read the Bible 'in depth' you would know that God is autonomous and not bound by any law. Not believing the God of the Bible is one thing, but misquoting the Bible as characterizing Him a certain, which it doesn't, is talking out your ass and making a specious argument. So, why not kill 1yr, old babies? Why are they any different from an 81/2 month old unborn?
TroddinSod 1 year ago
@TroddinSod #1
Cootabux 1 year ago
@TroddinSod #2
Cootabux 1 year ago
@TroddinSod #3
that in the distant future the Ugaritic Texts would be found and the whole scam would be exposed.
Bcuz we saw how Yahweh was 1 of 70
Cootabux 1 year ago
@TroddinSod #4
sons belonging to the supreme god El!
Cootabux 1 year ago
@TroddinSod #5
One word..."Hell!" It's the most evil of deeds!

xtremerandomness 1 year ago
You make a strong case (and I'm inclined to agree). However, your argument makes the assumption that only that that is intuitively obvious must be true. I agree that religion makes absurd claims, but the ideas of evolution and the Big Bang were surely laughed at by the masses originally, and those proposing would have been offended - they knew why the others laughed, and were offended that they weren't taken seriously, not because they knew deep down that they were in denial or embarrassed.
xtremerandomness 1 year ago
@xtremerandomness - Do you see anyone genuinely laughing at the big bang. Please point me to ONE video where you see GENUINE laughter on the subject. Some fake it, but it shows. Same with evolution. I have never seen REAL laughter on the subject. However, if I ever do I will ask why the person is laughing (genuine ignorance is not offensive to me) and what statement of mine triggered it. Then I will explain the reasoning and evidence behind it. If they give me the time, they won't be laughing.
philhellenes 1 year ago
@philhellenes
Do I see? No. Would I when it was originally proposed? Yes.
Please reread what I said.
Also, you may not find genuine ignorance offensive, and neither do I, but many do. I made the point that it is offensive to not be taken seriously, not that they would be offended by the ignorance of the laughing.
xtremerandomness 1 year ago
@xtremerandomness I knew you were talking about when the ideas were originally proposed, but I see little significant difference between a learned scientist of the 1850s hearing Darwin's ideas for the first time and the home schooled creationist kid hearing them for the first time, at least in terms of a potential humorous reaction. The laughter is false, forced, adversarial (offensive in the "military" sense). I'm not saying there are not exceptions, but they are rare.
philhellenes 1 year ago
@philhellenes I wasn't talking about a learned scientist hearing them, I was talking about the majority hearing them. They would have been (incorrectly) deriding them as false and ridiculous, and would have found it hilarious that anyone at all would be proposing them.
Now you would claim that you are not uneducated or whatever, but the point is that just because one group finds it ridiculous does not make it so, and it is unfair to jump to conclusions on their reaction.
xtremerandomness 1 year ago
@xtremerandomness "but the point is that just because one group finds it ridiculous does not make it so" If that IS your point, we agree. But this is more of an observation than a conclusion. And the annoying fact remains, nobody ever genuinely laughed at you when you told them about evolution or the big bang. And when you laughed at a believers "beliefs", as you must have at some point, briefly perhaps, you were not asked WHY you were laughing. Am I right or wrong?
philhellenes 1 year ago
@philhellenes But then you jumped to the conclusion that this was because they were embarrassed or secretly knew they were wrong, which was the logical fallacy I pointed out. Hence my example about the Big Bang and evolution. Irrelevant of whether people laugh at me about it now, people would have found it ridiculous and humorous back then, even if incorrectly and would have laughed about it; the claimants would have been offended by being not taken seriously, not for being secretly wrong.
xtremerandomness 1 year ago
@xtremerandomness I do not think it is irrelevant that they don't laugh now. As for the past, I know of no record of anyone ever busting a gut about evolution. The word that most generally typifies the reaction to Darwin's ideas in Darwin's time was "outrage" or "shock". and, as I stated before, if they HAD genuinely laughed they would have been asked why, glad of the chance to explain further. You see nothing of any significance in this asymmetry. I see some significance in all asymmetries.
philhellenes 1 year ago
@philhellenes Please, stop with the "wiser than thou" endings to your comments.
You're right about outrage and shock, but the point is the feeling of ridiculousness people had to it. asymmetries are only significant when it is directly related to the topic at hand without adding in new factors. The education of those involved is irrelevant to my point, the time period is, the actual reaction is (the feeling is the same: ridiculous and untrue).
xtremerandomness 1 year ago
@xtremerandomness The asymmetrical reactions between religious believers being mocked and believers in science being mocked is indicative, in my opinion, of a different depth of clarity and confidence. You'll find the same thing in UFO believers, 911 truthers, scientologists. Same asymmetry, same cause, in my opinion. (Was that a "wiser than thou" ending? I have no idea what one of those is.)
philhellenes 1 year ago
@philhellenes That would be a very arrogant claim to make on behalf of science. It can be (very easily) argued that science is as much of a faith as Christianity due to the infinitesimal part of space-time we have observed logically means that we can have no certainty on the continuity of the laws of physics, or even logic. Semantics aside, many religious people are more vigorous than the true scientist due to the scientists healthy level of scepticism. I was just imitating "holier than thou".
xtremerandomness 1 year ago
@xtremerandomness "It can be (very easily) argued that science is as much of a faith as Christianity..."
You just lost a bleeding chunk of credibility.
"...due to the infinitesimal part of space-time we have observed..."
All 26 billion light years of it.
"logically means that we can have no certainty on the continuity of the laws of physics..."
We see the same atoms doing the same thing at the same energies on the far side of the Universe. That is grounds for confidence.
philhellenes 1 year ago
@philhellenes It's called naturalism. For all practical intents and purposes we can assume science is correct. It is a faith nonetheless, as assumptions are made. Although by that logic EVERYTHING is a faith, which is technically true.
26 billion light years of an unknown sized universe in an unknown sized multiverse for around 10000 years out of 13.7 billion with an unknown amount either side in the multiverse. Great grounds for certainty.
xtremerandomness 1 year ago
@xtremerandomness I said "confidence", NOT "certainty". You accuse me of "strawmanning" then blatantly do it yourself. Also, I do not think nor have ever said that the physical laws in the multiverse are the same as this Universe (I'd bet my life against that actually). Also, when we look out 13 billion light years we see back in time 13 billion years so your "10000 years" becomes pure ignorance.
philhellenes 1 year ago
@philhellenes
You are replying to a point I never made.
xtremerandomness 1 year ago
@xtremerandomness I read the whole argument. It was interesting. That is all.
redice1024 1 year ago
@philhellenes I didn't dance around your point, I showed your logic to be flawed in a more general context.
Your latest argument appears to be simply replying to something I never said, saying I'm strawmanning you (how?) and then talking about something totally useless to this debate (I know the laws of the multiverse are different to the universe... your point?) You are correct that we observe the past. However, we miss the "present" in those places. So as much is lost as is gained.
xtremerandomness 1 year ago
@xtremerandomness If science is a faith, why does the scientific community continually seek to disprove it, for that is the scientic method. It takes no faith to believe in gravity because we all see it and feel it, there is evidence. Same for all science, and when there is no evidence the seeking is in the disproving not the faithful believing.
savageecho 1 year ago
@philhellenes Your examples are entirely probabilistic, which I have shown to be totally useless in this context.
xtremerandomness 1 year ago
@xtremerandomness - Probability is the core of science. By claiming it as useless in this context is to simultaneously (albeit inadvertently) claim that certainty (the only alternative to probability) is useful in other contexts. You don't know when to stop it seems to me.
philhellenes 1 year ago
@philhellenes That is true, but my point was on grounds of it being a faith, which it is.
xtremerandomness 1 year ago
@philhellenes I was also criticizing our logic in our certainty of the continuity of events in space-time. You don't seem to have addressed this point other than providing (seemingly) vast examples of our measurements in unknown sized multiverse. As soon as infinities or uncertainties are involved, we cannot HAVE any probabilities, much less trust them.
xtremerandomness 1 year ago
@xtremerandomness You accuse me of being probabilistic AND certain??? Enough. You object to my observation in the video. I answer your objections. We dance a little, trying to identify the cause of disagreement. You move to science. I show your ignorance. You strawman. You move your points after you lose confidence in them. If you landed a glove on me I didn't feel it. My knuckles feel sore and your face looks a mess. I'll let the readers judge the fight.
philhellenes 1 year ago 43

You are correct on the confidence of some religious people, and I'm sure you're correct in a few cases, but there are so many examples where this just simply is not the case.
xtremerandomness 1 year ago
@xtremerandomness To add to that, your point is entirely ad hominem, which was another point I was making with that original example, but didn't sum up quite so concisely.
xtremerandomness 1 year ago
@xtremerandomness Where have I been "ad hominem"?
philhellenes 1 year ago
@philhellenes You're setting my point up as a strawman, which is as bad as those people you criticize themselves. You're also very aggressive in your argument style, which does nothing to convince people that you're making a valid point.

@xtremerandomness You're not unreasonable. I apologise for my aggression.

Just don't try to give me a hard time that I cannot have faith in a zombie carpenter.
tmy6294 1 year ago
@tmy6294 But openly laughing in the face of religious people is totally fine then? I'm not an outraged Christian, but I hate the double standards of Religious people and Non-Religious people.
Javvier7 1 year ago
@Javvier7 I never stated I think athiests or people of faith should be intentionally going out of their way to belittle those with a different belief. However if you know on my door or solicit me with your beliefs I am within my right to call you out on it. If you feel bad for it then maybe you should be doing a little self reflection. If my actions can make you question your belief then you are very weak minded.

It's funny, this atheist appears to be the close minded one. I've already looked at the idea that no god exists, and I have decided it is not correct.
before anyone points out science to me, know that I have no problem with science, and nothing in science contradicts my religious beliefs.

@philhellenes
sigh, I'm not going to try to convince you who appear convinced of your superiority. If you would argue with me with an open mind, we might each gain new insight. But, if you maintain that you are right, and anyone else's view is wrong then there is little you could benefit from any kind of intelligent discussion.
AcheronEternal 1 year ago
@AcheronEternal If you simply believe there MIGHT be a god, I have absolutely no reason to feel superior in ANY way at all. BUT, if you believe any of the organised religions in this world, if you believe one word written came from a god, I think you are delusional. I see you speak with certainty ("this wondrous universe created by god" - not much doubt THERE), another sign of delusion, and/or ignorance. I do not feel superior to a delusional person, just luckier.
philhellenes 1 year ago
@AcheronEternal you must have a pretty skeletal religion if nothing it attests conflicts with science.
RobbingDog 1 year ago
@RobbingDog
Or perhaps I'm open minded? I see science as a way of looking at this wondrous universe created by god. The more science reveals, the more amazed by it all I am.
AcheronEternal 1 year ago
@AcheronEternal You can't cherry-pick your facts like that. Science looks at the universe objectively, not romantically, and it doesn't leave room for divine power of any sort. You can put your trust in logical analysis or you can put it in religion; the whole idea of "faith" rejects skepticism entirely, so there's no middle ground.
RobbingDog 1 year ago
This video is really stupid. I don't get angry when someone laughs at my religion. I don't question why they laugh, because I understand they do not share my belief. That is fine by me. But, that hardly means I'm embarrassed.
If you spend enough time thinking about life, the universe, and everything, a creator looks more and more plausible the longer you think about it.
ran out of room :(
AcheronEternal 1 year ago
@AcheronEternal "If you spend enough time thinking about life, the universe, and everything, a creator looks more and more plausible the longer you think about it."
To you, maybe. In fact, you can just check the map and see how the most religious coutries are underdeveloped and the people have, regrettably, a very poor education. The more you think, the less you believe. That is a fact.

It doesn't wash with me - our physical brains haven't got a clue about what's going on in the universe - that's how we know all religions are completely made up; as made up as if we asked a monkey to type out a book the size of The Bible and every word came close to matching up.
jazzx251 1 year ago
@jazzx251
Don't try to bullshit me, young man.
xy11xy 1 year ago
@xy11xy
You are the one who is full of bullshit. Patronising retard.
How can you (especially you) possibly know that the brain knows everything about the universe?
The evidence shows that it knows very little in the grand scheme of things. And what it does know is due to experience and education.
Saying the brain interprets information - fine, - but then to make the extraordinary claim that it KNOWS EVERYTHING, it just hasn't been unlocked yet?
What a load of rubbish.
jazzx251 1 year ago
@jazzx251 Sorry to butt in...but it might come from the myth that we only use ten percent of our brains and we have untapped potential. I'm not agreeing with anyone, I'm just stating an opinion.
