Thats not the point. They still joined for the came reasons as those who did in the world wars. Same aim - to defend our country. We don't choose what wars we fight - the government who we elect does. No Iraq and all these wars are bullshit but we do the best with what we have i.e. risk our lives just so that Afghans/Iraqis can "vote" and do not get stoned to death for being raped.

Not every soldier is a hero and joining the army doesn't automatically transform you into Britain's finest citizen. This American-style worship of the armed forces (started and enforced by The Sun and The Mail) is meaningless.
A doctor is a better hero than a soldier.
