  • just accept you dickhead he rocks!

  • Actually, john's pretty refreshing too.. the melodys he uses in his music aren't cliche and he's got feeling and his compositions are musically interesting.. and he brings jazz and blues out to the pop culture. I don't see how the white stripes' music is blues.. perhaps I'm wrong, if I am, explain it to me, I'd hate being ignorant

  • we just think john mayer is good, and you think jack white's good, no problem with that "bro". there is no such thing as "the best" guitarist, until there's an olympics for guitar playing wich all the guitarists in the world have to participate in. and it's not wether the girls want you or not, it's the fact that you want to let the world know it thats making it hard for me to take you serious

  • Yeah... Jack White brings a whole new different sound to this day and age.

Mayer is a great musician and guitarist but his licks have all been done, by the greats from the past.

Having said that, both are important to music today since there's a lot of lipsynching shit and fakeness going around the air waves.

  • Agreed, Kernel. Their lost. To witness such a talent in this day n' age, well they are truely missing out on history.

  • yo allthegirlswantme, ur a fucking idiot. John Mayer is the fucking best guitarist of our generation. you can suck mad nads if anyone thinks otherwise. John Mayer trio is the one of the best (if not the best) blues trio since Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble, before that Hendrix Experience. The only fucking book I can think of JM reading during that performance is fucking Alice in Wonderland while tripping on acid... fucking insane. recognize or gtfo!

  • i want to see him live so bad.

  • Brilliant! Great arrangement and love the choir.

  • *slow clap*.... *slightly faster clapping*... *slightly faster clapping with more people*.... *clapping normal speed with a lot of people*.... *stand up*... *STANDING OVATION*

  • he is the man... he himself makes good tunes... cover some good tunes without ruining them up!,,, jimi hendrix.. mamas and papas, SRV they'd be so proud seeing this man!

    awesome!

    funk groove

    tune

    mood

    all at their best

  • beautiful

  • your account name really speaks for your credibility

  • Anneliese Brown?

  • I wonder if that John Mayer super fan is in here

  • Excellent guitar player...y' re the best man

  • too bad NBC are a bunch of lame fucks and this video will soon be extinct from you tube

  • What kind of chord shape is that he uses at 0:24 - 0:26 ???

  • That is the nicest looking guitar EVER

  • Love how he gave this old song a new and refreshing modern rock twist!!! Great Job John!

  • This was not modernizing - it was retro - in fact, what he did was bring a Hendrix vibe to the Mamas and Papas tune. Both of the artists would be thrilled with it.

  • I dont think Ive ever seen John rip a solo like this on a talkshow before, even when doing gravity its only for 20 seconds and not really anything new. He was just given a good 30 secs to rip it up, so much freedom, god it was good. This mans just so brilliant. Nice one john!

  • You clearly don't know this guy

  • em... what???

    are you serious??

  • You are STUPID!

  • so great to actually feel inspired by music. john does that for me. brilliant, minimal arrangement of a timeless classic. thank you, John...

  • Can anyone tell me the effect pedal he uses for the solo???? thanks!

  • he has boss tuner some tubescreamer? klon and way huge aqua puss

  • TS-10

  • man that part at 0:55 is sick.

  • "maybe HE'S born with it"

    Sheesh. This man can rock

    Good on you John:)

  • I love John Mayer! But I think the kiddie choir ruined this song. Thats just my own opinion.

  • wow that was amazing

  • a klon centaur!!

  • so fucking awesome! john's amazing, and a beautiful song

  • the kids messed him up!!!

  • gooood stuff! i'm so excited for the new album. plus john is hotter than ever...

  • good stuff.

  • john's amazing

  • this is sooooooo friggin awesome!

  • Amazing to see and hear so much chemisrty

  • sounds like "all along the watchtower"..

  • same chord proggresion

  • weird to see someone almost as tall as Conan... he always towers over his guests...

  • I heard this on Conan the other day. What a great rendition of the song. I'm not a huge Mamas and The Papas fan, but this song really sounds great and does the original honor.

  • What song is he quoting at the end of his solo?

  • i think the last part of the solo you are hearing is REMINDING you of "all along the watchtower" as performed by jimi hendrix.

  • Like seriously, you know how hard it is to make this sound like a cool modern blues song instead of some elbow-patch tune.

  • What ?

  • He is playing the right chords just in different modulations so that the song is given a different, bluesy-jazzy feel.

  • i'm sorry are you deaf?

  • unplug your speakers and never listen to music again.

  • Comment removed

  • you win the "retard of the day" award

  • this is real live music

    raw and rockin'

what you see is what you hear

    put a smile on me

  • i just came....

  • dear john mayer; why are you so amazing?

  • Yeah i hate to say it, but those kids suck, they must be off key or something

  • great

  • sweet, dont like the chorus in the background though.

  • I just shit my pants a little... SMASHIN IT!

  • poop

  • Absolutely amazing.

  • bangin

  • THANK YOU JOHN

  • Jm is amazing & I want that guitar!

  • Brilliant!

  • Pino is such an awesome bass player. Wish they'd come to Australia.

  • the song and performance is great the only thing holding him back IMO is just that stage presence that the greats had..i cant describe it but its like all of them had a confidence and arrogonce with a guitar in there hand. john mayer has a laid back vibe..but he is still good i like his stuff

  • I've never seen so much "emotion" on his california dreamin' version!J.M. IS AMAZING!

    HE ROCKS!

  • Creativity has a name and a face and ten agile fingers that excel in muscle memory. Sometimes I think my heart beats with the tapping of his fingers. There is a serious depth to his artistry that is infectious and healing all at the same time. I see him as my musical passport. I usually travel by headphone chord or concert seat. Even when the trip is only 3:29 long it's well worth the ride. This video is just one postcard of many! Forever enjoying the sound and scenery. Much appreciation to JM!!

  • what the hell are you talking about?

  • he s just very very deep, too deep for our understanding, basically john mayer TRIO rocks

  • so cool!

  • john fucking rips!

  • I love how all the kids are basically in a plexiglass cage. I understand why, of course, but it's still funny to see.

  • The best version of that song, I've ever heard!

  • That little drip noise he makes at 3:07 is crazy awesome.

  • please please don't ever stop john

  • Didn't like it tbh.

  • down to earth and just plain amazing

    he's good.

  • What a beautiful man.

And not just in appearance... The talent, the lyrics (obviously not this song, but you know), the sense of humor, those hands... The man is amazing.

Please never stop making music, John.

  • It is perfect, I always have loved this song :)

  • I love John Mayer.

But it's fucking annoying as a guitarist to try to work up to his level, and when you think you've come close, he goes and does the tonight show and just reminds you "Yeah you suck".

But I gotta admit, it's a performance like this that makes me sit down and figure out a song by ear, so I guess he's the reason I'm getting better.

Man, i hope he releases his new album and then jams his finger so I can get some catch up time.

  • just awesome...just fucking awesome...

  • Incredible!

  • That was awesome, I would put that cover on the same level as his bold as love one in terms of creativity and making it his own. Awesome.

  • what sold me to JM was his improv leading up to city love in the crossroads festival...wait. ...it acutally ...it was neon...neon sold me and should all sell you to him as well

  • I just get shivers..

  • i love him....simply amazing!

  • hes so much more relaxed now...

    NO MORE WEIRD FACES!

plus his soloing is alot better... not as copy-cat...

not without its influences (i hear some hendrix and SRV) but still he has his own tone now and its great!!

    Rock on John

  • wow!!..didn't expect this!

  • This captures Mayer's ability to burn on the guitar. My favorite moments come at 0:43 & 1:00 & 2:39 with tasty licks. The solo really takes off at 1:46. Steve has a great fill at 2:14. Of course, the ending is very very cool with finger tapping at 3:07. He adds some edge to the song with his playing & the vocals come off relaxed & take a back seat. Can you imagine what he would be like just as lead guitarist without having to worry about singing?

  • Ya wann have some fun, head on over to a guitar forum and listen to the pissing and moaning about Mayer's "lack of real talent" from a bunch of wannabes who's biggest audience is the family dog.

  • Anyone who has any real talent can recognize other talent. JM is one of the greatest guitarists I've ever heard, mainly because, it doesn't matter how fast you can run up and down the board, but it matters what notes you play. And in his own songs, he knows exactly what to play, when to blaze a solo, when to keep it simple; and is a very good writer as well.

  • amen to that! ;)

  • u r correct. i used to not care for him either- mostly his voice. but he's a very good guitarist that writes quality songs.

he seems like a cool down to earth guy that likes to play & collect very cool gear.

    I enjoyed this performance.

  • He continues to amaze me! I love John Mayer!!!! This was wonderful =^)

  • WOW! I'm a HUGE JM fan, I've heard all of his live stuff, and seen him perform, and that was still impressive for being live. Beautiful cover, I wish he would put it on a CD, and damn he can shred.

  • the only thing keeping great talent, skill, and actual great guitar playing, with uniqueness in todays pop music IS john mayer.

  • That was great! How tall is John? Conan is 6'4"

  • this was an awesome show last night.

  • amazing.

  • I love this. The choir of kids was cool, but maybe a few serious singers instead of 20 kids would have been more intense. Either way, JMT is amazing.

  • Cool thing for JM to let the kids get to sing with him.

  • That is fucking outstanding.

  • wao

  • damn conan's taller than mayer...

  • wtf .. and what's Mayer like 6' 3" or something?

  • That man lives and breaths music! Goosebumps - completely made my friday night :)

  • Pięknie, pięknie .. :)

    :*

  • I was watching the Conan O'Brian show just now, and I heard John Mayer perform, and my JAW DROPPED.

    This is AMAZING.

One of the best live performances EVER.

  • man, is he talented.

love the design on his guitar too. very cool.

  • EPIC.

  • whoa he's an amazing singer and an amazing guitar player!

.... but what's with the choir? no offense

  • i guess you'd have to know the original song to appreciate the choir... slammin' performance Ree~~

  • THis has nothing on Eddie Hazel's cover.

  • oh my god...

    I think I just came

  • best guitar ever

  • SIIIICK

  • He gets better at guitar every single time I see him.

And so does the trio. They keep getting better together.

  • First, I was playing this in the background, but then I realized that NO, I should be watching this full screen. Loved it, I missed those guys.

  • My LORD.... that solo was just amazing... a true stunner. The kids make a good addition to the tune I think. But Jesus, John is a beast.

  • Oh my god I love him so much, he is so amazing at what he does.

  • John Mayer rips that guitar up. Damn, I had no idea.

  • Most people don't. I try to tell people he's way deeper than "Daughters" "No Such Thing" and his other radio hits. Man can play the guitar.

  • I like his early stuff as well, but the last few albums have really shown that he is maturing as an artist, and his skills have grown exponentially. It was this guitar solo that just instilled this even more. He rocked it.

  • john is the DUDE!

  • sweet guitar tone

  • Saw him in Vegas and he is worth every penny. Does Michelle Phillips get royalties from youtube?

  • This is freaking amazing! He took the song to another level!

  • OMG, insane !

  • he is so talented and greatly influenced by SRV!

  • How can you not like this?

  • I'm a huge fan of the original song, and this just did not do it for me. Loved the solo, though, that was amazing.

  • The solo is great! I agree

  • Wow, i found this on twitter. Very nice! If you have a twitter please follow me

    steeveoo :)

  • that solo was godly

  • He is intense. When he is on that guitar I think the world goes away from him. It's fun when the world goes away.

  • Man, what a genius! I can't wait for the new album. He has completed seven songs so far and hopefully next fall would be a reasonable date for the coming out. Let's see, anyway always the best guitar player now.

    Cheers

  • john mayer is amazing on the guitar

  • That was excellent, actually. I don't think I've seen Mayer shred it like that before.

  • get his dvd 'where the light is' the trio set is insane, plenty more blues shred or as some call it - bread.... good thing i don't write jokes.

  • then you obviously gotta check him out some more then ;)

  • Mama's and the Papa's California Dreamin' meets Hendrix's version of All Along the Watchtower

  • The children had to be kept behind glass due to the immense unbridled power of The Trio. It would have melted their prepubescent bodies!

  • excuse me? "the children" are sitting here reading your comments. rude.

"the children" have toured all around the world. "the children" are one of the most amazing choirs in the country thank you very much

  • Woa! Chill out, I meant no offense. Believe it or not, some things posted on this site are meant to be humorous!

It is in fact impossible to be melted by a guitar riff, although John Mayer comes close to achieving the impossible.

These kids, excuse me, "The Children" can sing worlds better than me. I did not mean anything I said literally.

Can't we all just get along knowing we all enjoy this music?

  • this so good it actually annoys me (i play guitar you see)

  • does anyone kno when his new album is comin out

  • John only did this to boost his ego. The choir is only background noise you can barely hear.

  • It would be even cooler if he got like a black church choir. With like fat old black ladies

  • THis was really cool anyway though, the kids choir add a nice touch

  • When's the new album out?

  • Best thing I've seen in a while... DAMN! just pumped me up for the new album like nuts.

  • Dang!!!

  • absolutely amazing.

  • hahaha i know a kid in the chior.

  • Whoa. Great cover

  • next time the kids think being in Glee Club is gay...play them this. Oh, the possibilities.

  • hey its nico!!!!

  • i can't believe conan is even taller than john

  • lucky kids.

  • rippin it up sweet

  • ppl might think john mayer has no talent with his pop song 'your body is a wonderland' but seriously, he is a bad ass guitarist

  • Comment removed

  • This is a cover of The Mamas & The Papas' song California Dreamin'

  • this is flippin sweet!

  • New favorite... thx JM3 :D

  • Fabulous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
