Just another show of great versatility from The Fixx.
Years ago - in London - I auditioned with them before Dan K joined them on Bass, they are all terrific guys and dedicated to their craft - sure wish I could see them live more often.
Sounds so good. Thanks for posting. I'm a huge Cy Curnin and Fixx fan. Have been since they came on the scene. Even in my late 40's, I'm still listening to their tunes regularly. But I prefer the songs that weren't as over-played on the radio. One of my all-time favorites is "Reach The Beach".
I must say that I was a Fixx fan when I was much too young to appreciate the real talent that was there. I never really understood the lyrics and their true meaning. Now older and (ahem) much wiser, the deep profound meaning behind the lyrics have emerged. All I can is amazing, truly amazing. Thanks for posting some phenomenal music.
I must say that Outside being my favorite Fixx tune , I am pleased to love this version just as much. As i have grown older and must spend much more time working to provide. I lament the lost time I cannot spend in the woods experiencing, communing with Mother Earth's beautiful denizens This version seems to echo my wail of loss.
I miss the cutting and jagged (but so emotional and comfortable in the mix) synth and guitar tones. To me this is just like the Police's remake of Don't Stand So Close to Me. They recorded a great tune, one that you would dig just a little more had you not heard the wonder that is the original.
@clarkem Agreed. This version is nice, but to me it sounds more like, mm ... like Creed I guess, than like the Fixx. There's nothing wrong with revisiting old songs, but I think it's most successful when the revision still keeps the spirit of the old version but adds another layer.
For me, the original "Outside" feels very anguished -- like the band was aching to be outside when they were stuck indoors. This version loses that anguished feel.
@bleuroo For a good example of what I mean by "another layer", check out the video on YouTube for their live reworking of "Woman on a Train" from the 2006 Hard Rock Vegas concert (Maccafixx uploaded it). The song is essentially the same, but the guitar is softer and has more echo, and Cy sings it in a gentle way that's got more nuance than the original and which slowly builds into a powerful ending. The feeling is bittersweet and nostalgic, but without losing the original hypnotic vibe
i'm sorry...you have some bands who are in the rock and roll hall of fame...and they are flat out bad...THE FIXX DESERVE AND BELONG TO BE IN CLEVELAND!...it will be an outrage if they aren't inducted!!...THEY KICK ASS...
I learned so much about patience and patterns and being highly methodological when it came to playing my drums, I mean, in the 80's when I was learning to play. The contribution of Adam Woods on the kit is quite immense. So subtle, yet vital to the overall flow and feel of the song.
This is a re-release. They laid this on the tenth track of 'Reach the Beach' which contained some of their most notable work, yet unrecognized masterpieces: Running, Opinions, Changing, and Liner to name a few. A MOST excellent band that was NOT recognized for their outstanding contributions.
the magical guitar effects have vanished. :-(

@Tjs964 Did you ever hear the instrumental version of "Reach the Beach" from the 12" single?

The bass really kicks your ass on this version... I like, though my ass is getting the boots something fierce.

Now it's more like a campsite singalong.

They never really made it here in the UK despite their obvious talent. Had to import this album from Germany!
