We haven't, not made a single step. The graphics keep getting better because of modern hardware but look at the actual gameplay: it could be ANY of today's shooter!

Half Life, Deus Ex and Red Faction with it's "break anything and drive vehicles" engine were very innovative and after them: nothing. We still play the same games we were playing 15 freakin' years ago!

I can not figure out why HL1 had moving 3D waves here, where as regular HL2, the water/toxic waste was pretty much flat, despite later Source work had it (Portal 2 has that massive propulsion gel leakage and splashage)

They probably reused sound files from the original Half-Life and Half-Life 2 for Alien Swarm, like they did for Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead. I always liked Unreal more than Half-Life 2. Better weapons, scripting, multiplayer, graphics, atmosphere, level design, etcetera.
