Little Steven is such a good guitar player and his prowess is really displayed in this song, it is a shame with the bigger sound of the band now a days it can be hard to pick out his great rhythm playing
The first Bruce song I ever heard. A rock DJ in Denver played it every afternoon at precisely the same time, as I was driving home from school. I've been hooked ever since!
@lztenyearsgonelz Didn't say that. Said he was a better singer than he was a songwriter.
But yes, there are plenty better songwriters than he. Many of them can't sing a lick, though, and his singing made many of the songs he wrote better than he wrote them.
The only singers I know of to cover his tunes were Manfred Mann (Blinded By The Light) and Patti Smith (Because the Night).
Sure, while there are some songs that don't need Bruce's guitar playing, you'd be crazy not to love "..Saint In the CIty" from this very show. That little string bending thing he did at the end of "Good Rockin' Tonight" (where all the other E Street Band members stop playing) on the '78 tour always killed me.
I really like Born To Run played live, without the Wall of Sound production. Gives them room to breath, they're even more exciting... Still love the album versions, don't get me wrong, though. Plus, I love that hat!
The only problem with bruce springsteens music is I can only listen to one track at a time. The next hour is cut out for me because i want to hear it ALL. Everyday.
RockRampage74, your only 15. You may still get that chance to see Bruce live and I hope you get to experience that for sure. I saw him when I was 16 and had to work (mowing grass, shoveling snow, et al..) to buy my ticket. Just keep on trying. You have the drive, now go out and see the Boss!! BTW, thanks for posting!!
I introduced myself to Bruce, because my dad is a little restriced in musical views and my mom, she'll even say it herself, doesn't ahve a musical bone in her body. I'm not going to go into the age thing, but I am 15. Bruce is a great inspiration as a singer/songwriter to me, but Roy Bittan comes as the greatest inspiration to me. As a pianist myself, it didn't take lone to learn Jungleland, and I play it constantly. I wish I could see Bruce but my family doesn't have the money. Youre lucky guys
Yeah, how comes one with a not too rich family background like Springsteen can take the balls outta his audience with as well not too rich family backgrounds? Is that called a working man's blues? I call that dream-selling, not more ...
@RockRampage74 I am just a view years younger than Bruce and live in a country where he is not that well known (yes, it's possible!) and have really explored his work during the last year. I am a writer (fiction) and I find his life and work a great inspiration. His music brings a lot of positive energy into my life which I find I can channel into my own work. Thank you, Bruce!
I'm 21 and I can tell you music sucks compared to Springsteen.. Not lookin' in the right places my ass. I'm in college and when my buddies and I get ready to party all night. there is no Kanye West on the stereo. It's Springsteen. TEN TEN TEN TENTH AVENUE FREEEZE OUTTTT.
It's the only Bruce song I've kept alive through bad marriages (that Lake O. girl) and Super Bowl appearances (he still did Freezeout -- he knows it's his only real song)..
It's true to a certain extent, however I don't of any current band that are as great as Springsteen and The E Street band,The Stones, The Beatles, Zeppelin, The Band.Arcade Fire and Wilco come close but there's still something missing
Arcade Fire, and Wilco are two great examples. Check out The Gaslight Anthem if you're looking for some great music, and some great modern song writing. Even Bruce loves these guys
And there I was worrying about the next generation.
What's up with music today?
Maroon Five sometimes seems to get it, but does anybody else?
I lived in Italy for four years, and Mexico for two, and they still have melody and lyricism in their songs, something I don't think is present anymore in American pop.
Im only 17 so i have been brought up almost realising that most bands are shit live but i went to see Bruce Springsteen in Dublin in July 2009 and he was unreal, he is the only person that i have ever heard where i like the live version more than the the actual recording on quite a lot of songs, like this one for example and Dancing in the Dark in Barcelona 2002, He DESTROYS any shit i hear today haha
I'm 21 and I bought the rising, devil and dust, magic and working on a dream, althought it's not very common in people of my age. I think it's a beast
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
If the Boss is so great, then why did people largely stop buying his records after "Born in the USA"? I'm not flaming -- I'd honestly like to hear some explanations.
The legend begins, actually it had a good start in Jersey but this is kind of like the comming out party for the rest of the world. Bruce says of this time, that we were just being born as a band. They were/are so good. He sounds as good yesteryear as he does today, unbelievable.
Exactly. There's loads of Bruce and the E street band out there, but the sheer...edge..attack...vitality- call it what you will- make this Hammersmith series (thanks glammer, and booo Sony who keep trying to take it off) one of the greatest performances I've ever seen.
when you see Bruce hat on like he is in 1993 Pearl Jam band rockin out .... peeeps dont get it thats the beauty of you tube it brings it back to life @!
This is really interesting. In this video, it's Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. Today, it is BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN and the e street band.. This is really great, and I agree, this blows away the version on Born to Run.
i was listening to this song earlier (album version), and its amazing how so much more energy always comes out live than it does on the record. which is really what makes a band great....thus, E Street.
I really don't like any of his new stuff..not that its not good stuff, but its not classic bruce..its accoustic and mellow, and the lyrics really aren't that complex and or poetic. Thats why he disappoints me..but I can only imagine how hard it must be to live up to the best albums of your career
yeah, after his early stuff, it can get sorta hard to take the new stuff as it is, without comparing it and all. it turns into a whole "yeah its good...but its not [insert classic bruce song here." but i think that really applies to Working on a Dream more than anything. I loved the Rising and Magic, and I still love the fact that none of his records have the same feel--they're all pretty unique.
Curious: do you prefer Bruce's music live or the album version?
I prefer live ones- they're always different. Sure, sometimes they're unclear, but I think they're worth it (most of the times). However, I do prefer album versions on some songs, such as The Promised Land.
To me,the heart and thumping of the band is Drum, Organ, Bass and Piano. The brain and the soul come from Bruce, and the Body (the part that completes the others) is the Guitar and Sax.
I remember starting to sport pirate loops and a wool beanie in the early 90's and my friends telling me I was cutting edge, which I replied "No, I'm just trying to look like the Boss".
I've worshipped Bruce for so long. I'm 19 and my band and I just cut an EP of all orignials but I had to include a cover of "Lost in The Flood" as a tribute to my hero, the one and only Boss. I'd love to get anyone's opinion on it. Search Lost in the Flood by Bad Magic
if your the kind of person who likes jimi hendrix and all that then pretend this song never happened because bruce doesnt even play guitar in this one

The E Street Band at its best.
Better than the Born in the USA tour.
And I say that as a big Nils Lofgren fan.
(I grew up in Montgomery County, Maryland, and we followed Nils' career all the way from Grin, to Neil, to Bruce.)

Not to take anything away from Bruce, and what he had to do with the performance of the band, but what a tight, fucking band, E Street.

I'm so glad somebody caught this on film.
At the time (1975), I didn't understand what the fuss was about.
Born to Run never grabbed me. I didn't hear this song until 1980. And it grabbed me. And seeing this video, I understand what the fuss was about.

Maybe James Brown compares. Maybe.

He's so much better as a standup singer than he ever was as a guitar player.
Or songwriter. This was his best song, and he did it excruciatingly early in his career.
Would love to hear him cover Walter Egan's "Magnet and Steel". Whenever I hear Egan doing it, I imagine Bruce.

Bruce is so much better as a stand-up singer than as a guitar player he should never have picked up a guitar. Or as a songwriter.

You can totally tell... 3:31. I've only heard James Brown, Wilson Pickett and The Boss hit that yelp-like noise... SO GOOD!
