this is continued from the previous post. I have had my rummys 3 years but am down to 3 from 12. Between the dwarf gourami's I had and the rough handling at the hands of the novice at the fish store, they didn't survive. Haven't seen any more and I don't want to buy cichlids just to have them eat my rummys. Do you know of an online place to buy rummy's? i would like to build a school of at least 12 before adding blue rams or bolivian rams.
just a few Q's for you Flamingo. How many rummy nose do you have and how long have you had them? Are the rams aggressive toward them? Do you think the corys would do okay in such a tank? I have a 55 gal and exclusively use R.O. water (perfectly clear water with twice a year water changes and a Marineland bio filter) however, the rummy's being wild caught are frequently in shock when purchased due to rough handling at the store. They can't tolerate being chased with a net or frightened. Continued
Not sure about a 15, but I've seen people keep a couple succesfully in a 20 gallon. With the two males I had I don't know how well the would'a done in a 20.
Your fish look like two males, but even a male/female pair will fight. Its best to buy several and let them pair up, choosing their own mate. Its hard to play match-maker with bolivian rams, so i find it best to keep them in groups, allowing one fish per 10" of tank "footprint". Give each fish ample hiding places and they'll act alot more civil, once a dominate male has been established
Cool! Glad it worked out. Bolivian rams are such cool fish. I had a pair in my 55, but the male died recently. The female never showed any interest in spawning, and they fought alot. Im planning on adding at least 3 more to the tank, so hopefully I'll get at least one willing pair. LOL
@the1flamingo, how sensitive is this fish compared to blue rams and discus? I mantain a constant 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, and <30 nitrate. The tank is a ninety gallon. I will look forward to your reply.
My fish aren't hormoned. Guess maybe your not used to seeing well bred fish? Or maybe you just don't know what fin extentions are? Both the males are still alive and doing WONDERFUL at the time of this post.
You are thinking of German Rams. These are Bolivian Rams which are a different fish. Bolivian males have extensions on their dorsal and caudal fins....sometimes the females have some extension. Orange / pink edges with blue streaks in the fins. Sexing is difficult, but the female usually doesn't have the extensions..The females are frequently as brilliantly colored as the males.
are you using a t5 lighting system? and can you give me advice on how to make your plants like that ? i also have two rams btw with some discus angelfish and a parrot cichlid.
No, at the time of this video I had 75 watts of floresent lighting but that is it. Most of the plants are low light and do great without CO2 and high lighting.
I just introduced 2 male bolivian rams to my tank yesterday and they are so shy I can't even get them to eat. I have a 30gal long tank with black sand, 3 large amazonian swords and some rock work. I want them to be active as yours are. Do you have any idea as to why they are so shy?.
Mine were shy for about 2 weeks after I got them. They didn't eat right away either. I don't even think I fed them till about the 3rd day of having them. Give them some time and they will turn around. And trust me when they get hungry enough they will eat. :)This video was taken a couple of months after I aquired these two. I only have 1 of the males now, I traded the other for a female.
Hey flamingo, sadly one of them passed away yesterday morning. I'm really worried about the other male because he's still not eating. I have one of those expensive kits that test the quality of the water and everything is fine, I don't know what else to do. Do you think that I bought a sick ram and didn't know.
That is a very good chance they may be sick to begin with. Have you tried different foods? Like frozen bloodworms? Blue Rams are usually more known for this than the Bolivians are, but it is not unheard of. If your water is fine I'd guess it would be unhealthy fis to start with, it could also be a parasite. Watch your fish closely and see what symtoms they are showing other than not eating. You can do a google search on the internet and may be able to pin point the exact problem. Good luck!
You're right. I think the ram that died was sick because I noticed the night before he was just drifting with the currents rather than swimming, and he was much less active than the other male. Just to be safe I'll put the surviving male in a quarantine tank because I wouldn't risk my leopard pleco getting any type off sickness.
i've been tryna figure out if i have a male and a female or two males also. I've only had the pair for two weeks, but they seem to behave pretty similar to your two.
They look like they are 'kissing' every now and again but i was wondering, do yours follow each other around much? mine seem to stay close but ocassionally 'spar' also.
Mine follow each other for a while when I start watching them then they will 'spar' after they realized that I'm not feeding them. Males are really colorful where as females are a bit more dull. I'm not the best at telling. You might look online and see if you can find more info on bolivion ram mating and see if a male/female pair also 'lip locks'.
I love when they do that. I wouldn't trade mine in for the world. Mature males are larger and have longer dorsal fins than the females. The females dorsal fins appear to be "spikey." I have a male and female that spar than lock lips. Pretty entertaining cichlids if u ask me.
Just fine, they use the plants at terrirory boundries and cover if they are frightened. They pretty much ignore the other fish, everyone gets along well.

What is the name of the red-faced fish that find their way in and out of the frame.
(The name slipped my mind and I'm thinking of buying some)

They are rummy nose tetras. :)

@the1flamingo thank you, I discovered the name just after I posted. BTW, beautiful fish. I am envious. :]

is it possible to tell whether the fish is male or female? if so how?
BBD4697 3 years ago
Both my males had long fin extentions on their tail fin. The female that I traded one for is obviously female when I compare her to the male.

those fish are beautiful but they are also hormoned. Try to stay away from the ones with "veiltails" if you're just looking for a nice healthy fish.

do the extensions on the tail have anything to with them being male or female?

I bought them from Petland and ridiculous as it sounds they were in the tank with some Jaguar cichlids.

We don't have Petlands where I'm at, but them in with some Jaguars are scary! They most have been very young or else the little rams would be lunch!
