Think what you like about the comparison between Jackie and Elvis, but here's an interesting remark Jackie Wilson himself made: "A lot of people have accused Elvis of stealing the black man’s music, when in fact, almost every black solo entertainer copied his stage mannerisms from Elvis."
This is Linda Hopkins not Laverne Baker. Laverne recorded it on Atlantic 2048 in 1960. Ruth Brown recorded it onPhillips 4062 in 1962 and Faye Adams in 1953 on Herald 416 in 1953. Mike pedicin had a medium size hit in 1957 on Cameo 125. Been recorded many times by many artists,\. Linda Hopkins was so under-rated.
Linda Hopkins did a play about the music of Bessie Smith called "Me and Bessie". I saw it in Boston. She is one hell of a talent. Wish I could see more of her.
Actually, this recording was by Jackie Wilson & Linda Hopkins on Brunswick. My late Aunt Mary had a copy of this, and I remember playing this on her record player when we went to my grandmother's house down in Scottsburg, Virginia for the summer. I've not heard this in many, many years.
This was my grand-daddy's favorite. I can see him moving the coffee table, and dancing my Grandma around. They were so very much in love. She fell ill with MS...told her to bring the walker, the cane, the wheelchair...he kept moving that table and playing this record!!
Johnnie Ray did this a few years before Jackie. Johnnie's version is very dynamic. I have a DVD made in 1958 but I think he recorded it around 1955. Johnnie was great friends with Lavern Baker. You can see it on 123video.
What in G-d's name does Elvis have to do with, Jackie or this duet, sung by Linda Hopkins & Jackie Wilson. Please, do us all a favor, and dont compare Elvis and Jackie, they both would hate this stuff, it means absolutely nothing. They were great friends, and fans of each other. There is no way to compare these two Giants in Music. Come on let's get real. Jackie the greatest singer, Elvis- changed the face of music, just like the Beatles, years later... with a new style. JW FABULOUS.
@Dee530 I must agree with you Dee they wouldn't go there & again I agree Jackie was the best singer ever. But that is not to take anything from Elvis who had a good range as well. But no other singer had range, control, sound, style & charisma like Jackie Wilson Not even his dear friend Sam Cooke. Copied by some of everybody. There just is no one better, I knew it when I was young & fell in love with Oh Danny Boy WoW!!! Just WoW!!!!
Hmmm I guess you must be joking coz no one in they right mind can compare these two to Elvis. Not even remotely! They do sing ok enough but compared to Elvis quite ok really!
I dowmloaded this track some time ago, so I will bow to your far superior knowledge. That's the trouble with relying on other peoples postings.
I must admit I know next to nothing about Lavern Baker, and even less about Linda Hopkins, so I'll see what there is of hers here. The good thing is that you've introduced me to someone I didn't know existed, so many thanks for that.
The first photo in the vid is JW and LB, so I guess they did sing together at some time.
Elvis paid for Jackie Wilsons medical bills when he was in hospital

This is NOT Lavern Baker singing with Jackie. It's Linda Hopkins, and this track is from an album they did together.

Lavern Baker recorded it on ATLANTIC 2048.
Jackie and Linda Hopkinsa had it released on Brunswick- 55243, in May 1963.
I guess you could well be right, if this is that recording.
