@alijav091 you seem to know it all, wonder why you even checked the demo out if U know how to do it already, of course its chet atkins style, a pick makes the same sound as a thumb pick, so its the same sound overall, but u already knew that, you just thought U would tell us your opinion anyway.

Josh. You sound amazing brother. Keep up the great riffing, and the well synced picking techniques.A player like myself who grew up listening to Tucker/Allmans/Skynryd/Outlaws,etc. However when I learned the guitar I was playing Metallica/ OZZY/ SABBATH , and other metal styles. I always wanted to learn the Country/TEXAS/BLUES styles. You are one of those Guys that make it happen. I just discovered Junior Brown, and all I can say is WOW!! Now onto Albert Collins Thanks Jimbo
This is really a fair demonstration of basic Carl Perkins or Scotty Moore humpback guitar, but it sure isn't anything like Chet. There are a lot of clips of Mr. Guitar himself on YouTube, check those out and see for yourself.
Expert Village videos are useless. They're typically only good for someone who don't know ANYTHING about the subject that the 'experts' are talking about, meaning someone who doesn't know a guitar from a hole in the ground.
Chet used a thumbpick - had lot to do without how he got his sound. The hybrid/Nashville style certainly is the most used, but it is more difficult since the flatpick has to be 'anchored' by the thumb and index finger; two fingers being used to play one string....
How do i get rid of the words,'' paragraph? On the damn video screen? So i can rip the licks off and play some country shit? Since i live in a hick town at the moment, i want to fit in..Not really..''I could change the key and use this with my own G7 1.4.5 chord occasionally add a 6th Emin chord ( Im so cool cause i know theory) Ha! For a straight up farm fiddlin chicken pickin shred just to piss off cotton pickin field workers. Going in the bar with my guitar strapped on like i own the fucking

This is incorrect "Chet Atkins" style playing. Chet uses a thumbpick alternating between the #6,#5,and #4 strings instead of just #6 and #4. your halfway there. Merle Travis used a different method alternating with pairs using #6,#5, and #4,#3. Check out my vids. I use both methods.

@meyou1968 - I don't know enough about country guitar (jazzer/rocker guy here), but that's that vibe i got, too....it just didn't remind me of the little bit i've heard from chet in the past.

i can tell everyone watchin this, that if your just trying to learn to fingerpickin of this that its a tough bass sound to continue while picking, you should find a song with really basic bass, like open E and nothing else and start from that , because concentrating on the two different riffs will be impossible if youre just beginning to start. for the most part at least just wanna help
I am a pretty fair guitar player, but sh.. I cant bring playing bass line and melody under one hut :-(( I mean, it looks so easy as so many guys play fingerpicking just like this. I know, practice......
grrrrrrrrr i can do one or the other part of this but not the same time. This takes cordination. I think it's easier to do sweep arpeggios than to chicken pick.
ive been sweating over this tune for so long, cant match the melody notes, does he play the D note on the B string after the open E string.. ne help? mr, josh zee?
LOL ... I get a kick out of these bantering comments ... Lighten up you guys .... The man posted a vid that will help SOMEONE out there .... ps . you want "Fingerstyle guitar ?" ... Check out Thom's vids on u tube and his site and get right into it ..... See where it started . It'll amaze you .
The title is a bit misleading, this isn't the way chet atkins did it. First of all, he used a thumb pick, and second, he didn't use dist. Not to be rude or anything, but it's true : )
Actually, Chet is more famous for his work on Gretsch and Gibson hollowbody electrics. Both companies have models named after him. I've even seen him pick up a Telecaster a time or two.
except that this is more the "travis" style with the 1-2-1-2 on the bass. atkins alternated the low e bass with the b note on the a string 1-2-b-2-1-2-b-2 or e-e-b-e-e-e-e-b-e
Chet atkins style? I think not.... chet had great tone didn't use a plectrum and could actually play well - this strikes out in ALL of those things yeeeeeee uck
Yeah, except for 1) he's playing Chet Atkins STYLE, and 2) Chet Atkins did use a plectrum. He notoriously used a thumb pick and is responsible for the style of picking known as chicken pickin(g), which most commonly employs a thumb pick.
'Chet Atkins Style' most commonly refers to chicken pickin which is having a walking bass line (with a thumb pick, as Chet Atkins did to make it easier) and accents on the higher strings. This video showcases that style as Chet would've played.
Right, but if you go look at some videos of Chet Atkins playing in many of them he does use a thumb pick, but plays in the same manner as the guy in this video, with the thumb picking out a bass line while the rest of the fingers play the melody.
it comes from tons of different rockabilly songs....scotty moore playse something similar in elvis presley's version of 'baby lets play house' that same lick has gotta be in 50 songs though
I couldn't agree more. Ironically enough the guitar community is large enough to be self supporting, if we weren't so busy critizing each other. And you have to remember it's that way with all types of music, not just guitar. In closing one should be aware that every musician brings something different to the table and you can find great and worthwhile things in everyones playing. For instance mention Andre Segovia, Chet Atkins, and Wes Montgomery. They all do different things that we enjoy.
Gee, I thought it was only the classical guitar community that was super critical of their fellow classical guitarists playing. Just from reading some of these comments I can see it cuts across the board. The only thing I could add is everyone lighten up. If any of you think his guitar playing is bad just wait till I get some of my videos posted.
Actually I'm gonna luv it. I can hardly wait to get started and get my playing critiqued. I'll be providing a public service by making everyone else playing on youtube look great.
Also I never played classical guitar for a living or anything but that's a tough business. The only gigs you can get are playing before guitar society members and most of them play better than you do. And then you have to give a master class afterwards and that's even more fun. In closing I enjoy you tube a lot.
Great comment, MrGospelGuitar. Don't ya just hate those expert commentators who - big surprise - never seem to put a video up themselves. By the way, the opera crowd got their heads up their arses too - check Villazon comments.
As with many others, this is a good lesson, but not even close to Chet Style. This guy is a great player, but this is not even close to Chet's Style of picking.
Wow, being a metalhead I thought it was only metal guitarists who got into meaningless internet fighting over who's better than who. I see now I was mistaken. Country people are just as stupid. Why don't you just enjoy what he's doing or watch something else?
So, you mean winning an argument on the Internet is like winning a contest at the Special Olympics - you may have won the argument, but you're still a retard?
\what's missing ? Tone..crappy strat squeeking Dont cut it..and 'the style' ...my ghod...the songs of Schubert had similar rhythm trax...yes, on guitar.
nobody wants to play like chet but to enhance it to their style like steve howe from yes most people wouldnt even know steve got alot of inspiration from chet
Intent is nice but You cannot play proper Chet WITHOUT a THUMBPICK PERIOD. Chet is also a 1-2-3-4 alternating lick NOT the same 1-2-1-2-1-2 played over&over. Also the tone is horrible Chet always has a full tone not a tinny one, He's playing on the BACK pick up look for yourself!. I WILL be posting some Chet Videos SOON!!
lol. just look at his right hand. you cant play chet atkins with a flat pick. -you cant play right guitar with a flat! its like painting your house with a toothbrush
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This is creepy.... I think Red neck is the term for you... but you mite like that to much. You country freaks give the guitar a bad name.... Try Slipknot, or Job For A Cow Boy (Haha actually look at job for a cow boy you might like it...) I mean "country" is the place you live, not a type of music.... When people think country they think cow boy and Broke back mountain.... I am your doctor, and I proscribe Metal. Death Metal, Black Metal... whatever, just not what ever this is...
If u are explaining the concept of travis picking.. this video is acceptable... but if u are trying to teach pple abt chet atkins.. not trying to pull u down.. ur travis picking still have alot room for improvements.. work harder. u are not so bad. =)
I have to admit that my english isnt that fantastic. However, I have to let you know that I am commenting on his playing, so if you really want to comment people's command of the english language, please go somewhere else. Your courtesy will be very much appreciated. Thank you!
Hi - I found this a little bit too hard to follow what was going on, but I perservered and worked this out and I have posted my own video which slows the whole thing down, zooms in on the right hand, and has some tab on it. Tried to post it as a reply but it hasn't shown up - but seach for "An idiot's guide to "travis picking" for the guitar" posted by me
is it just me or does this function better as an ad for Josh Zee than it does as a guitar lesson?

The title is a bit misleading, this isn't the way chet atkins did it. First of all, he used a thumb pick, and second, he didn't use dist. Not to be rude or anything, but it's true : )

step one to being like chet: get a classical or acoustic guitar
RaptorJMR 2 years ago
Actually, Chet is more famous for his work on Gretsch and Gibson hollowbody electrics. Both companies have models named after him. I've even seen him pick up a Telecaster a time or two.

except that this is more the "travis" style with the 1-2-1-2 on the bass. atkins alternated the low e bass with the b note on the a string 1-2-b-2-1-2-b-2 or e-e-b-e-e-e-e-b-e

what a fine looking guitar you are using to teach chet style country
greenez62 2 years ago
Chet atkins style? I think not.... chet had great tone didn't use a plectrum and could actually play well - this strikes out in ALL of those things yeeeeeee uck
ryreinhardt 2 years ago
Yeah, except for 1) he's playing Chet Atkins STYLE, and 2) Chet Atkins did use a plectrum. He notoriously used a thumb pick and is responsible for the style of picking known as chicken pickin(g), which most commonly employs a thumb pick.
'Chet Atkins Style' most commonly refers to chicken pickin which is having a walking bass line (with a thumb pick, as Chet Atkins did to make it easier) and accents on the higher strings. This video showcases that style as Chet would've played.

This guy isn't using a thumb pick...
corndawgz88 2 years ago 3
Right, but if you go look at some videos of Chet Atkins playing in many of them he does use a thumb pick, but plays in the same manner as the guy in this video, with the thumb picking out a bass line while the rest of the fingers play the melody.

MrGospelGuitar 2 years ago
Gee, I thought it was only the classical guitar community that was super critical of their fellow classical guitarists playing. Just from reading some of these comments I can see it cuts across the board. The only thing I could add is everyone lighten up. If any of you think his guitar playing is bad just wait till I get some of my videos posted.

youtube is just like that, comes with every video, no matter how good it is
DimebagsLeftToe 2 years ago 2
Actually I'm gonna luv it. I can hardly wait to get started and get my playing critiqued. I'll be providing a public service by making everyone else playing on youtube look great.
Also I never played classical guitar for a living or anything but that's a tough business. The only gigs you can get are playing before guitar society members and most of them play better than you do. And then you have to give a master class afterwards and that's even more fun. In closing I enjoy you tube a lot.

Great comment, MrGospelGuitar. Don't ya just hate those expert commentators who - big surprise - never seem to put a video up themselves. By the way, the opera crowd got their heads up their arses too - check Villazon comments.

great job on the subtitles...
the only thing cant be seen because of the subtitles is the guitar your hands and what you are doing
AndyVerok 2 years ago
Not.....Chet's bass lines always went root / fifth / root / fifth.
ROCKSTARCRANE 2 years ago
that is incorrect.....for example, in a basic C chord on beats 2&4 E on the D string is hit....the 3rd.
Also for D, he would often strike low F# on the E string, also the 3rd.
But yeah root-5th is the foundation of the style.

Chet played with a thumbpick and his fingers, not with a flatpick. It was nothing like this at all. This is closer to Brian Setzer's style
bigdjindustriez 2 years ago
As with many others, this is a good lesson, but not even close to Chet Style. This guy is a great player, but this is not even close to Chet's Style of picking.

Wow, being a metalhead I thought it was only metal guitarists who got into meaningless internet fighting over who's better than who. I see now I was mistaken. Country people are just as stupid. Why don't you just enjoy what he's doing or watch something else?

nobody wants to play like chet but to enhance it to their style like steve howe from yes most people wouldnt even know steve got alot of inspiration from chet
same with this guy in the video imo

since when did youtube make you watch an advertisement first?
jbuffbird 2 years ago
Intent is nice but You cannot play proper Chet WITHOUT a THUMBPICK PERIOD. Chet is also a 1-2-3-4 alternating lick NOT the same 1-2-1-2-1-2 played over&over. Also the tone is horrible Chet always has a full tone not a tinny one, He's playing on the BACK pick up look for yourself!. I WILL be posting some Chet Videos SOON!!
