  • is it just me or does this function better as an ad for Josh Zee than it does as a guitar lesson?

  • Yeah i love your style . sounds great .thanks.

  • First video ive seen from expert village that isnt gay

  • @Aciddaggerr why would u keep watching them if u thought the rest were gay....just so u could bitch at them on every video?

  • @Aciddaggerr hmmmm are u sure about that

  • I dont think this is Chet Atkins style either.. its more like travis picking though, most rockabilly players use it..

  • @alijav091 you seem to know it all, wonder why you even checked the demo out if U know how to do it already, of course its chet atkins style, a pick makes the same sound as a thumb pick, so its the same sound overall, but u already knew that, you just thought U would tell us your opinion anyway.

  • @TheTangentUK ??? no i know what ive heard, i m still learning to play it.. ure talking loco pal.. i still think its a very good lesson.. ure over reacting, having periods or sthin? i am not the only one here with that opinion, if u dnt want to hear it, go on watch the fkin video..

  • @TheTangentUK no need to use language like that, I did not swear at you so don't do it this way either, you can still have your say without using Fs and Cs.

  • @TheTangentUK well thats how i talk to a**holes.. u got a problem then stop talking to me, i wud totally appreciate that..

  • @alijav091 funny your the only one that thinks that, I noticed a few others had bad comments to say about you, none of which have had bad things to say about me, I guess people see U for what you are, which isnt much at all really, infact your not worth speaking to, so don't bother sending me another post as I am not your councilor, tell someone else your problems.

  • @TheTangentUK shut it, thanks..

  • @alijav091 OK whatever

  • Nice video but that's not Chet. Google "Bobby Gibson" and watch and listen to him play Ain't Misbehavin'. THAT's Chet style.

  • "Expert" Village...

Nothing wrong with his playing, but is it Chet's style?

  • try out guitarmanual.typepad.com for video and ebook instruction for guitar

  • Like dude says. Whatever your pickin style, always do the alternate pickin thing on the bass strings and pick up with your other 2 fingers. Not rocket science.

  • I can play like Chet. Then i wake up.

  • I wake up at 430 in the morning, play Jerry Reed for an hour just to loosen up,play some Chet tunes and then play 2 hours of classical. If you wanta be a good player you got to PRACTICE.

  • aint nothin difficult about it.

  • @redwashre First of all this is NOT Chet type plying it cannot be done without a THUMB PICK!.

It took me over 2 YEARS of HARD work to master the concept of Chet playing VERY FEW even TODAY have it or can play it!.Simple You bet!. Morons!.

  • @2bwhiteproud too bad there are still chinese kids doing it faster than you. And what he is trying to show is a simple introduction into the chet atkins style picking stop hatin.

  • Its called Travis pickin as in Merle. Not anywhere near as hard as it seems.

  • I don't even like country and I just spent an hour learning how to play this. Sounds so awesome dude

  • Verry interresting but, difficult!

  • Very untreting but, difficult!

  • This guy is good, I dig the style.

  • Sorry but nobody can play like Chet Atkins. Fact.

  • "mother truckers"? Seriously could you have a more stereotypical and uncreative redneck band name?

  • definitively the best dude in expert village ...

  • man I'm learning that shit! sounds fucking awesome!

  • "they use their pick, and also their other _|_ fingers."

  • This is cool. Thanks.

  • from the mother truckers? ahahahahahahahahaha what a fag

  • @MagrPwnAge

What's your problem? They're a great band and he's a really good guitarist.. troll somewhere else, if you'd be so kind.

  • @pianoplayer1224 um excuse me but i am a professional troll okay. that right there wasnt trolling that was simply a funny comment. so get off my nuts

  • @MagrPwnAge

    Because that was really funny!

  • i didnt liek it

    too boring IMO

  • Sorry Bud Chet style is an alternating roll of thumb on bass strings VERY Few people play CORRECT Chet with a strait pick VERY FEW, Correct Chet Style is 1-2-3-4 on bass strings. I'm going to post some Chet stuff SOON.... took me about 2 solid YEARS to get the thumb roll down pat very few people play CORRECT Chet note on correct.....

  • @packingten so, are you saying that VERY few people play chet correctly??? i couldnt really tell by your reply.

  • thats a nice twangy riff i dont know why 100 people didnt like it

  • Call it what you like, I thought it was very good demo.

  • Josh. You sound amazing brother. Keep up the great riffing, and the well synced picking techniques.A player like myself who grew up listening to Tucker/Allmans/Skynryd/Outlaws,etc. However when I learned the guitar I was playing Metallica/ OZZY/ SABBATH , and other metal styles. I always wanted to learn the Country/TEXAS/BLUES styles. You are one of those Guys that make it happen. I just discovered Junior Brown, and all I can say is WOW!! Now onto Albert Collins Thanks Jimbo

  • This is really a fair demonstration of basic Carl Perkins or Scotty Moore humpback guitar, but it sure isn't anything like Chet. There are a lot of clips of Mr. Guitar himself on YouTube, check those out and see for yourself.

  • EXPERT VILLAGE NEEDS TO STOP MAKING VIDEOOOOSSSSS PLEASEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • That isn't Chet Atkins style sounds more like Leo Kottke I play that song.

  • call out the chords please!

  • Expert Village videos are useless. They're typically only good for someone who don't know ANYTHING about the subject that the 'experts' are talking about, meaning someone who doesn't know a guitar from a hole in the ground.

  • Chet used a thumbpick - had lot to do without how he got his sound. The hybrid/Nashville style certainly is the most used, but it is more difficult since the flatpick has to be 'anchored' by the thumb and index finger; two fingers being used to play one string....

  • @ROCKSTARCRANE check out Brian Setzer's style, I think you'll find it interesting.

  • i cant see the guitar damn it

  • How do i get rid of the words,'' paragraph? On the damn video screen? So i can rip the licks off and play some country shit? Since i live in a hick town at the moment, i want to fit in..Not really..''I could change the key and use this with my own G7 1.4.5 chord occasionally add a 6th Emin chord ( Im so cool cause i know theory) Ha! For a straight up farm fiddlin chicken pickin shred just to piss off cotton pickin field workers. Going in the bar with my guitar strapped on like i own the fucking

  • this video totally sucked large dick...WTF !!!! stupid writing , cant see shit.....

    TERRIBLE........

  • new update...F5 to skip the ad! whoot whoot!!!! spread the word

  • am i the only one that thinks expertvillage is a bigger threat than al qaeda?

  • @smokedaddyo Haha, yeah, soon they will do tutorials for A-bombs xD

  • @smokedaddyo yes

  • this sucks I cannot see anything just lines of words

  • @callasexperience AMEN!!!

  • if you really wanna play country guitar then throw away the strat and pick up a tele.

and for god sake don't be pickin up a gretch hollowbody like that jeff bridges movie...who the heck thought of that?

  • What's with the negatives? This guy is a great player ... I'd bet anything he can play circles around anybody giving this a thumbs down.

  • The Mother Truckers? I like that..

  • yeah, thx alot! just figured it out on my guitar...

  • good

  • god i hate the expert village guitarists they all seem well shit and so sloppy with there playing this guy however sloppy he may be is a good teacher tho so ill let this one vid slide! =P

  • @ox0Jason0xo yeah, josh zee is insane. Listen to any mothertruckers song. hes damn near untouchable

  • this is really an excellent lesson! thank you so much!

  • This is easier to do with a thumb pick. It leaves more fingers free for playing the melody while the thumb picks out the bass line.

  • what the hell is it blocked with words for????????

  • No thumb pick?

  • Hmmm...why r the majority of comments so catty and bitchy?

  • LOL mothefuckers HAHA I CANT STOP LAGHFT

  • boom chick...i missed it. use a pick...PLEASE

  • Too bad he ruined the classic look of a perfectly good guitar by putting the stickers on the body.

  • No knock on the lesson or the player . . . just pointing out that the subtitles run across the guitar so you can't see his fingers most of the time. Why are there subtitles anyway? He's not speaking Zwahilli, or Travis, his accent is light. In future videos, loose the text or just frame down a bit.

  • @Neighborsteve You can disable them anytime

  • @Neighborsteve

    Disable the subtitles then, Einstein.

  • Blah, Blah, Blah. That's all I have to say.

  • This is nice, but I'm still waiting for the Chet Atrkins guitar lesson...

  • This is incorrect "Chet Atkins" style playing. Chet uses a thumbpick alternating between the #6,#5,and #4 strings instead of just #6 and #4. your halfway there. Merle Travis used a different method alternating with pairs using #6,#5, and #4,#3. Check out my vids. I use both methods.

  • great pick!

  • IS A GOOD VIDEO

  • why do the subtitles say Josh C? he is Josh Zee. no wonder he's so underrated...

  • this is joshC from mother truckers. I lol'd xd

  • Have you heard Chet Atkins????

  • the guitr is sooo cool *_*

  • helped me buddy thanks

  • Hey just wondered about your gear. Guitar, pedals, and amp with settings. Thanks for the lessons and concepts.

  • You sound good. I've been doing the metal/shred thing for years and have recently started working on chicken pickin' and bluegrass style. It's a hell of a lot harder than the scaler based shred stuff!

  • thanx Josh ,

I don't know why this vid brought on so many "e-haters" I thought you did well , keep it up.

might add a video of my playing to justify the cruel comments ha ha

  • Stick to learning Josh, not teaching.

  • to all: like i said a few days ago, i'm a jazzer/rocker guitarist and this whole style is something i've never worked with...i got it together really quickly, though, because i made a quick tab of it and having that visual there helped me a bunch...if you want a pdf copy of the tab, just message me in my channel with your email and i'll hook you up. (it's nothing special, but it does help if you're a visual learner like me)

  • sweet jesus, this guy can't teach for shit....and how much Jack Daniels DID he put down before he made this shitty video...."and then i add the deco*vomit belch* DEk-urh-uh-tuv notes."

this guy sucks, man...and the line he says is the "melody" is different from the one he's playing.

TO ALL BEGINNERS: ignore this one. lol

  • @somebodyjones2 Grow up you dumb fuck.

  • This isn't Chet styled guitar. He's good with the rockabilly lick, but, to use the royal name of Chet Atkins with that performance is terrible.....If He took out the Chet mention in the heading, it would be better defined.

  • @meyou1968 - I don't know enough about country guitar (jazzer/rocker guy here), but that's that vibe i got, too....it just didn't remind me of the little bit i've heard from chet in the past.

What video do you recommend i check out for the chet sound?

    thanks, man!

  • That is the worse dam sounding guitar I ever heard .Chet would roll over in his grave if he heard you playing that nasty thing.

  • i can tell everyone watchin this, that if your just trying to learn to fingerpickin of this that its a tough bass sound to continue while picking, you should find a song with really basic bass, like open E and nothing else and start from that , because concentrating on the two different riffs will be impossible if youre just beginning to start. for the most part at least just wanna help

  • I am a pretty fair guitar player, but sh.. I cant bring playing bass line and melody under one hut :-(( I mean, it looks so easy as so many guys play fingerpicking just like this. I know, practice......

  • grrrrrrrrr i can do one or the other part of this but not the same time. This takes cordination. I think it's easier to do sweep arpeggios than to chicken pick.

  • Yes. It practices and it becomes good.

  • ive been sweating over this tune for so long, cant match the melody notes, does he play the D note on the B string after the open E string.. ne help? mr, josh zee?

  • LOL ... I get a kick out of these bantering comments ... Lighten up you guys .... The man posted a vid that will help SOMEONE out there .... ps . you want "Fingerstyle guitar ?" ... Check out Chet's idol , Merle Travis . Merle is THE Man .. Scotty Moore used Merles licks ..... Everybody still uses Merles licks .... Now Merles' son Thom Bresh is carrying flag ... Check out Thom's vids on u tube and his site and get right into it ..... See where it started . It'll amaze you .

  • its a chet style not a chet technic

  • thanks for posting, now I have something to work on ;-) you really helped me thx

    regards

    Karl

  • It's a mighty fine guitar pickin' mate. Don't worry about the idiots leaving negative comments. They have nothing to offer. Cheers

  • what a fony

  • oh sorry E chord.

  • what chord???

  • Hey it doesn't matter about the differences between C.A. and the guy. I say "thanks". It sounds cool from my humble standpoint...

  • the ad before the video was half as long as the video, not to mention it was for shampoo...i don't give a shit.

  • @mothulicka dandruff can strike when you least expect it man.

  • @mothulicka funny shit

  • The title is a bit misleading, this isn't the way chet atkins did it. First of all, he used a thumb pick, and second, he didn't use dist. Not to be rude or anything, but it's true : )

  • Actually, Chet is more famous for his work on Gretsch and Gibson hollowbody electrics. Both companies have models named after him. I've even seen him pick up a Telecaster a time or two.

  • Check out Joe Robinson 'daddy longlicks' if u wanna see how it is really done

  • thanks for posting stuff like this. i dont care who did it first so long as its rich.

  • except that this is more the "travis" style with the 1-2-1-2 on the bass. atkins alternated the low e bass with the b note on the a string 1-2-b-2-1-2-b-2 or e-e-b-e-e-e-e-b-e

  • Mystery train style ! Elvis !

  • what a fine looking guitar you are using to teach chet style country

  • Chet atkins style? I think not.... chet had great tone didn't use a plectrum and could actually play well - this strikes out in ALL of those things yeeeeeee uck

  • Yeah, except for 1) he's playing Chet Atkins STYLE, and 2) Chet Atkins did use a plectrum. He notoriously used a thumb pick and is responsible for the style of picking known as chicken pickin(g), which most commonly employs a thumb pick.

'Chet Atkins Style' most commonly refers to chicken pickin which is having a walking bass line (with a thumb pick, as Chet Atkins did to make it easier) and accents on the higher strings. This video showcases that style as Chet would've played.

    Cry Harder

  • What you know about guitar playing could fit on the back of a bus ticket

  • This guy isn't using a thumb pick...

  • Right, but if you go look at some videos of Chet Atkins playing in many of them he does use a thumb pick, but plays in the same manner as the guy in this video, with the thumb picking out a bass line while the rest of the fingers play the melody.

  • agreed

  • it comes from tons of different rockabilly songs....scotty moore playse something similar in elvis presley's version of 'baby lets play house' that same lick has gotta be in 50 songs though

  • can someone please tell me the name of the song this comes from !!!

  • Very instructive , thanks

  • What song is this from?

  • it sounds like "i will" from the beatles

  • Not too shabby but the guitar sounds rank for expert village, i cant talk like

  • PRIESTTT! LOL sorry These guys are really good too.

  • more thumb pick ! Nice vide, thanks

  • I couldn't agree more. Ironically enough the guitar community is large enough to be self supporting, if we weren't so busy critizing each other. And you have to remember it's that way with all types of music, not just guitar. In closing one should be aware that every musician brings something different to the table and you can find great and worthwhile things in everyones playing. For instance mention Andre Segovia, Chet Atkins, and Wes Montgomery. They all do different things that we enjoy.

  • Gee, I thought it was only the classical guitar community that was super critical of their fellow classical guitarists playing. Just from reading some of these comments I can see it cuts across the board. The only thing I could add is everyone lighten up. If any of you think his guitar playing is bad just wait till I get some of my videos posted.

  • youtube is just like that, comes with every video, no matter how good it is

  • Actually I'm gonna luv it. I can hardly wait to get started and get my playing critiqued. I'll be providing a public service by making everyone else playing on youtube look great.

Also I never played classical guitar for a living or anything but that's a tough business. The only gigs you can get are playing before guitar society members and most of them play better than you do. And then you have to give a master class afterwards and that's even more fun. In closing I enjoy you tube a lot.

  • Great comment, MrGospelGuitar. Don't ya just hate those expert commentators who - big surprise - never seem to put a video up themselves. By the way, the opera crowd got their heads up their arses too - check Villazon comments.

  • @Freddieboy44

    tl;dr.

  • great job on the subtitles...

the only thing cant be seen because of the subtitles is the guitar your hands and what you are doing

  • Not.....Chet's bass lines always went root / fifth / root / fifth.

  • that is incorrect.....for example, in a basic C chord on beats 2&4 E on the D string is hit....the 3rd.

Also for D, he would often strike low F# on the E string, also the 3rd.

But yeah root-5th is the foundation of the style.

  • Wrong.

  • @barnstormer07 Fuck you and your one word-bullshit-comment.

  • Chet played with a thumbpick and his fingers, not with a flatpick. It was nothing like this at all. This is closer to Brian Setzer's style

  • As with many others, this is a good lesson, but not even close to Chet Style. This guy is a great player, but this is not even close to Chet's Style of picking.

  • Wow, being a metalhead I thought it was only metal guitarists who got into meaningless internet fighting over who's better than who. I see now I was mistaken. Country people are just as stupid. Why don't you just enjoy what he's doing or watch something else?

  • So, you mean winning an argument on the Internet is like winning a contest at the Special Olympics - you may have won the argument, but you're still a retard?

  • \what's missing ? Tone..crappy strat squeeking Dont cut it..and 'the style' ...my ghod...the songs of Schubert had similar rhythm trax...yes, on guitar.

  • nobody wants to play like chet but to enhance it to their style like steve howe from yes most people wouldnt even know steve got alot of inspiration from chet

same with this guy in the video imo

  • since when did youtube make you watch an advertisement first?

  • Intent is nice but You cannot play proper Chet WITHOUT a THUMBPICK PERIOD. Chet is also a 1-2-3-4 alternating lick NOT the same 1-2-1-2-1-2 played over&over. Also the tone is horrible Chet always has a full tone not a tinny one, He's playing on the BACK pick up look for yourself!. I WILL be posting some Chet Videos SOON!!

  • this sounds pretty good, he is probably better than you

  • You're not very good and your technique is sloppy.

  • oh go fuck off somewhere! - where is your video of how to play country style in one minute 35 seconds.

  • Country Guitar in 1min 35 secs !! Unbelievable

  • lol. just look at his right hand. you cant play chet atkins with a flat pick. -you cant play right guitar with a flat! its like painting your house with a toothbrush

  • that cap is not acceptable...

  • you're a twat.

  • give the guy a break!!! Where's your Chet instruction videos?!! Oh yea u have no videos posted!!!

  • Did he just flip me off?

  • If u are explaining the concept of travis picking.. this video is acceptable... but if u are trying to teach pple abt chet atkins.. not trying to pull u down.. ur travis picking still have alot room for improvements.. work harder. u are not so bad. =)

  • hey wangkiller learn to type properly..your response looks like a 12 year old girl wrote it on a cell phone

  • @scumcity14

I have to admit that my english isnt that fantastic. However, I have to let you know that I am commenting on his playing, so if you really want to comment people's command of the english language, please go somewhere else. Your courtesy will be very much appreciated. Thank you!

  • the "Motherchuckers" AHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH =D=D=D

  • Hi - I found this a little bit too hard to follow what was going on, but I perservered and worked this out and I have posted my own video which slows the whole thing down, zooms in on the right hand, and has some tab on it. Tried to post it as a reply but it hasn't shown up - but seach for "An idiot's guide to "travis picking" for the guitar" posted by me

  • lol hes showing us how to do it over utube ... ppl usually learn these moves through many years ..

  • 0.22 WTF!
