Its always bothered me that Barry Lyndon won the most awards of Kubrick's work and yet is also his most sorely overlooked film. It is such a beautiful film and deserved to be a part of Warner Bros. Kubrick set a few years back.
Love 2001 too...and although Barry Lyndon is my favorite I'm hesitant to call it Kubrick's best if you know what I mean because 2001 may take that crown...I think the boldness of this film is what makes it my favorite...
I'm not agree that this is kubrick's finest film. I know very well kubrick's work and I think 2001 earns the rank because his innovation on the original story and on his meaning are very poor, and that it's more a very good adaptation than a personnal vision, not means that I not admire the film, I've watched it so many time, it is a masterpiece. it may not be his best but certainly the best period film ever made and the film who has the most remarkable photography in cinema's history.
@dukane14 my favorite is 2001, however I do agree. As a visual artist (which, what else *is* a director than a visual artist?) it's his most accomplished film.
@BoundlessFreedom Indeed it is. Many fans of this film are waiting with baited breath for a blu-ray release. Assuming it is done correctly, I am feeling equally anxious.
@minamu8 Indeed. My previous post was created over a year ago. I purchased the film the day after it was released on blu-ray. Unsurprisingly, it was quite stunning.
Opening shot starting at 0:55 looks amazing for not being HDR.

@dukane14 It is also my favorite of Kubrick's work. It appears that only recently has it even begun to acquire the recognition it richly deserves.

@dukane14 I think many people find it very slow moving and not as exciting or frightening as his most famous films.
