i saw baby gramps in portland recently and he and his band played for almost 3 hours straight, without taking any breaks. i held out going to the bathroom for an hour because i kept thinking the show's gonna be over after the next song. baby gramps is awesome!
It sounds a lot like throat-singing to me which just requires a completely different way of singing, called "khoomei" (originating in central Asia), and doesn't require any smoking at all.
I'd never heard of him until recently, when I bought the album 'Rogue's Gallery'. Baby Gramps does a rollicking version of 'Cape Cod Girls', which sucked me in the minute I heard it. Consequently, I started checking him out, and found myself here....mesmerised. He's a winner alright - I hope he ventures down under sometime.

I didn't know since his site is never updated! I want his albums but wonder if he ever checks to get payments...
