  • Not only did I enjoy this song, I learned a great deal of the "behind" history of it--TX!

  • Interestingly, this melody was used as the tune of a protest song against the much-hated NSB (Dutch National Socialists) during WWII.

    The protest song lyrics:

Op de hoek van de straat / Staat een farizeeër / 't Is geen man, 't is geen vrouw / Maar een N.S.B er

Met een krant in de hand / Staat hij daar te venten / Hij verkoopt zijn "Vaderland" /

    Voor zes losse centen

Mr Tauber actually sings the orginal English lyrics by Jimmy Kennedy in this recording.

  • @Fedde2001

TAUBER RECORDED MANY ODD CHOICES OF SONGS. HE WAS DEFINATELY NON POLITICAL. AFTER HAVING TO LEAVE HIS BELOVED GERMANY IN THE EARLY 1930'S. HE WOULD NOT RETURN UNTIL 1946. HIS PARENTS HAD DIED AND THERE WAS NOT REALLY MUCH LEFT OF HIS HOMELAND. HE DID RECORD ANOTHER SONG CALLED..."SOMEWHERE OVER THE HILL". THAT HAD A WAR THEME TO THE MELODY/LYRICS. SOME SONGS BECAME FAVOURITES OF THE MASSES DURING WORLD WAR 2. TAUBER RECORDED "jJATTENDRAI" MADE FAMOUS BY TINO ROSSI.

  • @TAUBERFANLEHAR2 Heykens' tune must have been very popular at the time, seeing that it was adapted and changed into a political song during the years of occupation in Holland. I'm aware that Tauber was non-political. Obviously, many popular tunes had new lyrics superimposed to fit the political situation of the time. This tune has been put to many uses... It was interesting to learn that Japanese rail used part of the tune for announcements in its railway carriages...
