A brilliant piece of poetry. It was a fast-paced, high-adrenalin rush, through the history of a Jewish woman's experience in America. The situation was casual and could easily transfer into one of our own lives. Vanessa Hidary does the piece justice and delivers big in this one-of-a-kind, history-making, Def Poetry Jam presentation.
To you critics: Sure she isn't getting it perfect. Sure there is still the identity with victim but she is still stepping in the right direction. It's a fight for many of us Jews to learn the language of self - respect. She's learning and she's teaching us. The point is... What do you REALLY think of Jews? (include Blacks, people of colour, homosexuals... WOMEN!) "You don't look like a Jew = you tricky yid. If you'd looked like one I wouldn't have ended up talking to you...." Go for it, woman!

Beautiful. You're a gutsy young woman. I could not have said it better myself. You set an example for all Jews in this country and of this world. You are strong, articulate and unflinching. I have nothing but praise for you. I am encouraged to know that there are people like you that can speak the truth without fear. I am looking forward to hearing more from you.
I lived in Brooklyn for 5 years and rented out 3 rooms to revolving roommates. During that time, various roommates said horrible things about Jews in my own house. Whenever I told them I was Jewish, they would say things like, "but you don't LOOK Jewish. You don't ACT Jewish. You're... generous!" ... the sickest part is, other roommates wouldn't get offended by this, but they'd be hyper-sensitive about racism against Blacks, Hispanics, Muslims, etc. Why can't we get the same sensitivity?
I often get the same response from people I meet and although they say it in the form of a compliment, it is so totally ignorant and racist, I can't stand to hear it anymore. Well done Vanessa! That took a lot of guts!
