Man I wish I could understand what you are saying, when I get better at Japanese I will come back and watch these again. Im still learning hirigana and kanji so might be a few years lol.
Takamisakari wa boku no ichiban sukina sumo desu yo. Kare wa sugoi desu. Sono chanko wa totemo oishii mimashita. Tokorode ima wa hirugohan no jikan desu. Mata ne domo
Hey Hiko, i'm learning japanese at home by myself and i was wondering if you could possibly give me any websites, words or phases that you use in everyday life in japan to help me out, hopefully i'll be able to do a course in japanese in college, i'm currentley in my last year at school and i started learning japanese a few months ago.
shiorix, I'm glad you liked it. Sumo is one of the best days out you can have in Japan. NHK presents it in a very boring old fashioned way, but it really is very exciting, and cultural. If you get the chance, I highly recommend following the next basho in July (I think...).
haha.. nice video! Thanks nice advice! Chanko is 200yen? Low price! Though I got wind that a sumo wrestler must resign as a sumo wrestler when he cannot make a Mage "Oo icho"... I think it's probably joke. May Kotooshu win the tournament championship?
Thank you, Kantoujin! The 200 yen chanko is delicious, and while my commentary about Hagerozan... I mean Hakurozan and Roho is a bit rude, it is all just in fun. Kotooshu is looking very strong isn't he, but so is Hakuho. I can't wait for tomorrow's match!
I hope that many cushion is thrown into Dohyo again. But I think that Kotooshu's winning rate is low. Win/loss record for the year. Kotooshu 1-2 Hakuho.
Hahaha, yeah, many Japaneses consider Sumo an spectator sport for older people. The broadcasting station NHK might be doing something with that stereotype, but when I was a kid, my grandpa loved to watch in on TV, and we would watch Professional wrestling (or K-1 for younger generations?).
As matter of fact, I'm an avid fan of neither, but have been to a live Pro-Wres and no live Sumo myself. A typical Japanese. lol
I am on a mission of slowly taking people I know to sumo one by one and showing them it live (I guess this vid is a more efficient way of doing it!). EVERYONE I have taken, Japanese and not, has not known much about Sumo before going, and become rabid fans of the sport afterward. NHK just doesn't show it the way it is. It is really one of the best days out you can have in Japan, and yes, the Chanko rocks!
An excellent video! I feel that I am learning Japanese culture, my "native" culture, from a different perspective by watching your video! I've never been to sumo matches yet, but your video made me want to go to one of them! I definitely wanna try that 200 yen chanko! I will go to Kokugikan next time I go to Tokyo! Thank you.
Thanks for the comment, I'm glad you liked it! Sumo is one of the areas that, when you go there, you see so many foreigners who are fans - and realize that sometimes, it is the people new to Japan who realize the best parts of Japanese culture even more than the people who live here and experience it every day. It can be good to have a fresh perspective. And no joke, I have paid 5000 yen and more and never had chanko as good as that in the Kokugikan Cafeteria. Definately check it out!
Shitashii chan, sumo is fantastic, and completely different live. It is only shown on TV by NHK and everybody tries to present it in a very stale dignified way, but at the stadium, people are shouting, throwing cushions, getting squashed and totally getting into it. It is a great day out - many people I have taken along ended up fans of the sport. I'm glad you enjoyed the vid - it really is as fun as it looks.
That was nice! I went to Sumo once and sat on Tatami too. Good job of exlaining and capturing the true essence of Sumo. Asashoru is so powerful. Five stars*****
Dude, tell me about it! I cried for every second I edited to make the video a reasonable length (I started out with 52 mins!). I will post an English vid of the Ama match with subtitles and an English intro later this week, and good idea, I will definately throw in a slow motion replay!
And yes, the 200 yen chanko at Ryogoku is better than 5000 yen chanko I have had elsewhere. I'm glad you liked the vid, and appreciate the comment.
Takanorius, ask and YE SHALL RECEIVE! I just uploaded a remixed vid featuring the Ama vs Wakanoho match with some overlayed english commentary and a slow motion replay. Go to my channel page and check it out. I hope you like it.

I agree Wakanoho vs. Ama was the best match, specially won by Utchari.
People love it when the small guy wins over big guy.

Wow, it's been loooong time since I watched Sumo last time, but damn, it's exciting!
You should've made a slow-replay on that Ama(I don't know how to write his name in Japanese) guy's last flip.
And this was the first time for me to see 朝青龍's moves, but yeah, I can see he's a rough fighter. I just thought his body was bigger than that though.
I'm glad that they sell tha Chanko for some reasonable price too.
5 star video!
