just needed to add show me how to live, which he can unfortunately not sing very well live. Which is odd because he sung beyond the wheel perfectly in 2010 :s
Once again where the fuck is Reach Down? How can that not be on the list. Just listen to his singing in that song..Epic fail to not have it on any of the best scream videos
Two things: 1-I think Chris's Audioslave singing is badass. He gets ALOT more chest power and I really like his mid register on their first CD. The chorus to Gasoline and Show me how to Live and all of Cochise are great.
2- Smokestack Lightning was taken from a fill Zeppelin used to use for the into to the Lemon Song and Heartbreaker from 68-69' which is crazy that I just noticed that!
@bijeleudovice2 woah woah woah woah.Plants highest ntoe is NOT a C6.His highest recorded note was an G6/A6 falsetto or headvoice screams when he sang along with Page's guitar in an extremely early version of How Many More Times.
And Plany has one of the most beautiful voices ever.Hes my fav singer of all time in all aspects. If you dont belive me about the C6,theres a vid of it on youtube.Just type in Robert Plant,King of High G
@Johnnyboy200406 Dude,Led Zep went WAY higher and more full sounding than Chris Cornell.Robert Plants range was unbeliveable, and all of the recorings(90%)are allc hest voice. His highest chest voice note was G5(g above tenor high c).
Chris Cornell is a great singer though...but both singers are in different catergories. To me,NOBODY beats Robert Plant haha.
cant agree much with you, Robert Plant's range is the same as mine and believe me a Plant would have serious difficulties singing beyond the wheel
notice Cornell voice at 1:57 Plant (and me) would hurt his throat trying that, no bullshit
Cornell doenst use this range much anymore, it injures your throat seriously and sometimes permanently, he has a very unique voice and found himself at home from Badmotorfinger upwards
Both Plant and Cornell were and are great, just different
@draltar Ikd man.Robert Plant has actually hit a C6 in chest voice(maximum pushing it)!!Thats higher than almsot any singer EVER!.Chris Cornell has a VERY good voice and range and uses it beautifully.Same pitches, but different tone.Cornell has a heavier tone than Plant.I think Plants highest note was G6,A6 or even a B6.I need to listen to his early live Led Zep days. His head voice9sometimes falsetto)was amazing.
like i said, both are great singers, Cornell has a heavier voice than Plant, Plant was more melodic and regarding the high pitch tones it depends
i can do anything Plant can do with his voice, but thats because i have a similar range. You cant sustatin certain ranges for long, notice how Plant lowered his range toward the years
Nowadays, unfortunatelly, Plant lowered his range to medium tones (hes getting old too afterall), while Cornell impressingly can reach some high pitches still.
@Annonymus121 On average, but I've never seen Plant display much of a range, or a ton of power. He doesn't really belt, and I've never heard him sing as high as you guys are saying he has.
Louder than Love, Temple of the Dog, Badmotorfinger and Superunknown are probably the most impressive. Down on the Upside is a great album but his range isn't as impressive, although he has AMAZING control and power. Ultramega OK is the first real album Soundgarden put out...so his voice isn't very controlled...it's high and all but I don't care for the album really. Hope this helped!
I'd play it safe and go with Superunknown, imo he pulls off some amazing stuff on that album, but this is prob just personal preference, he's awesome on every album,, tbh it just depends what songs you prefer to hear him screaming to
He sings lower on superunknown quite a bit but then goes super-high pitched when the songs reach their climax and it has a kind of echo effect added to it which makes it all the more unbelievably awesome
you may even find yourself moving to Revelations by audioslave in time, His voice is beautifully aged by this album and his singing sounds great (singing that is, not so much screaming, but wide awake, one and the same, and somedays have awesome finishing screams) Hope this helped.
Carlos Zema, Andre Matos, Hansi Kürsch, Jorn Lande, James LaBrie, Warrel Dane, Jarkko Ahola, Marco Hietala, Sebastian Bach, Kelly Sundown Carpenter... man, I could go on.
Chris had a great ranger no question, ok he had freaking supernatural range however he did sing falcetto to get certain affects so its not like he didn't have to sing in falcetto for the really high notes cause he did, his voice was just so powerful that he supported the notes flawlessly. Note support and tone is key in good falcetto. I have a few mediocre of videos of me singing the quality is poor but I'm sure you might hear some similarities in my voice with Chris. Luv Chris 4ever
chris hasn't used falsetto ever in SG. he said that he hadn't used it in so long that he almost forgot how to use it. he just has an incredible range, no falsetto.
how does that make him a "hippocrite?" (hypocrite) It sounds like you don't even know what that means.
And that song isn't falsetto, listen to "smokestack lightning" to get an idea of what his falsetto sounds like and just how high he can sing without it (or at least by using his head voice effectively).
to be honest thats not even falsetto.. hes mixing his head voice and chest voice VERY effectively.. makes "falsetto" a bit more aggressive and heavy instead of this judas priest type thing. it can be done by many, its hard to trigger it, but once you get it you have it. now im not saying hes going from the bottom to that a4 or whatever it is (on smokestack lightning) but its sure not as easy as falsetto
hell yes he has an amazing voice and he has to have one of the widest ranges in all of rock music i mean 4 octaves who else has a voice like that and has lasted 20 yrs without sounding aweful ever
i'm a cornell fan but yeah he has sounded awful many times from 2001... but he has made up for it by sounded amazing everytime before then and many times after
@GreyCalx No falsetto there he is merely belting that's why he lost almost a full octave by the audioslave days. Pure raspyness, one of the best singers period.
Do the research. There's full voice, then there's head voice - what Chris, Rob Halford, Robert Plant, Tony Harnell, etc., sing in - and THEN there's falsetto, used by guys like Vitas and Ian Gillian (in songs like "Highway Star" and "Strange Kind Of Woman"). If you want a clear example of head voice as opposed to falsetto, then listen to the "Say Hello To Heaven" screams, in the third chorus I think it is, in which he uses head voice, and then listen to the same notes at the end in falsetto.
There is nothing wrong with them and I agree, they are very good but Chris' voice in Audioslave just cannot compare to when he was in his prime with Soundgarden/Temple of the Dog.
@KurtInChains yo his voice is still good man..i mean it wasnt as crazy w audioslave..but when he beyond the wheel w soundgarden..i almost shit myself..i was like wtf? he still got that shit!!
@KurtInChains Agreed. His voice in Audioslave sounded kinda shot and raspy. Good to hear him sounded better again these days. That 'official' video performance of theirs here on youtube performing 'Beyond the Wheel' recently is amazing.
Yeah I don't understand sometimes - does sound like falsetto at that point in a way, yet the note he slides down to sounds like his chest voice and I'm not sure how he would be able to cross-over so smoothly. It's insane...
At 1:53, is he singing in falsetto, or just a really, really, really high regular voice? I can't tell. If it's falsetto, his falsetto is amazingly powerful.
I haven't heard some of these songs...they make the high notes he hits in Audioslave seem like child's play. I think the chorus in "Show Me How To Live" might be the highest he goes up in any Audioslave song. Unfortunately, I do think that he's mostly lost this ability to go up extremely high, but that's probably inevitable.
fuck damn. at 1:01 i actually thought that was a guitar for a few seconds. must be nice to be able to do just about anything with your singing voice. all i can manage is a decent, not very loud baritone.
no its not, chris cornell is one of my favorite singers and i also like rob halfords voice and robert plants voice so to have them sound like their mixed together is awesome
Just got Badmotorfinger, it is the best vocal performance I have heard since robert plant. Cornell is just amazing. Out of any of his vocal performances on any album with any band, slaves and bulldozers, and room a thousand years wide are my two faves. Don't give me shit for this, but on ultramega ok, while he definitely shows good range, i sorta think he sounds like a girl on songs like beyond the wheel. He isnt bad, like i said, best since rob plant, but i much prefer Louder than love and BMF.
listen to it more until you want to hear more. then definitely check out Superunknown and Down on the Upside. But ultra and BMF are def the two better vocal albums
The Sabbath and Zeppelin influences are just incredibly present in their sound yet they add their own flavor to it. Best band of Grunge and 90's rock and metal.
@7d7e7f7 I actually just watched an interview saying neither him nor any other member of the band had ever bought a Zeppelin album until later in their career, mostly because they were popular. I don't know how popular Sabbath was back then, I know now they aren't seen as a huge rock band by most mainstream rock stations, but seeing their influence in almost every band I could imagine them not being into Sabbath for the same reasons they didn't get into Zep.
hehe... yeah... though I've seen him smoking in many interviews... I think it has more to do with pushing from your balls... or rather squeezing your balls to sing like that....
Chris Cornell rips records like some of the best soul and blues singers. The only difference between he and them is the context in which they sing in. He's just that damn good
Thank you rajuas, but I found out that Cornell double tracked his voice in that part. One voice goes from E5 to F5 and the other goes from F5 to G5 I think. Searching with my Good Eye Closed is an amazing song vocally for Cornell. If you listen to the last 2 minutes of that song Cornell displays amazing control and breath support as he lets out a continuous series of savage, powerful wails/screams that he holds with great strength. For me,these 2 minutes have some of Cornell's greatest singing.
i'm glad there is somebody who likes cornell voice without sayng he is god or hot, badmotorfinger for me is one of the best records i've heard, cornell's singing is exellent and full of tecnique
Yes, a lot of people do call him god, but he is one of my top 3 favorite singers ever. Some people do not realize or understand the skill and support needed to pull off Cornell's style of vocals. He puts so much raw energy and emotion into his singing that its impossible not to be amazed when listening to him. His vocal control is also great. Also, I am glad to see that you appreciate his singing and understand its standout delivery.
slaves one short F5 and one longer (great chest tone here), power trip G5 (is there a live version to be found somwhere??), beyond (chris sings up to F5 in this song, amazing!!!), smokestack thin and falsetto sounding G5 (check out the live version here on youtube, much better), I awake D#5 and E5 in the chorus but the live version from "louder than live" reaches G5, it´s here on youtube.
Also check out "Searching With My Good Eye Closed" the end is fucking spectacular, most of these high notes he hits, he sings them, but at the end of 'Searching...' he screams and its fuckin brilliant
The picture is to go with the hot screams and drive the ladies crazy!

The Sabbath and Zeppelin influences are just incredibly present in their sound yet they add their own flavor to it. Best band of Grunge and 90's rock and metal.

Yep I remember hearing Matt Cameron saying when we were around ever body probably thought we were Zeppelin rip offs
zzqqwwer 3 years ago
@7d7e7f7 I actually just watched an interview saying neither him nor any other member of the band had ever bought a Zeppelin album until later in their career, mostly because they were popular. I don't know how popular Sabbath was back then, I know now they aren't seen as a huge rock band by most mainstream rock stations, but seeing their influence in almost every band I could imagine them not being into Sabbath for the same reasons they didn't get into Zep.

His late80s/early 90s voice would fit Guns N' Roses. I kinda like them already but chris was the singer I would love them!

Dont forget mr chris, has been operated from vocal chords 4/5 times,

hehe... yeah... though I've seen him smoking in many interviews... I think it has more to do with pushing from your balls... or rather squeezing your balls to sing like that....

I love Chris Cornell's voice!!

Chris Cornell rips records like some of the best soul and blues singers. The only difference between he and them is the context in which they sing in. He's just that damn good

There's a live version of "Beyond The Wheel" found on various singles from the 'Superunknown' album. The vocals on that one are just insane!

Actually the highest Cornell ever goes is in "Full On Kevin's Mom". It's right after the 2nd chorus where he wails "Mommy".
Insanely high. Like chipmunk high.

Does anybody know the note that Cornell hits in the beggining of Searching With My Good Eye Closed?
NME38 3 years ago
it's really a dificult question cause the voice was "whamyed", but i think it's one of notes that you can hear in the guitar, hope my answer can help
rajuas 3 years ago
Thank you rajuas, but I found out that Cornell double tracked his voice in that part. One voice goes from E5 to F5 and the other goes from F5 to G5 I think. Searching with my Good Eye Closed is an amazing song vocally for Cornell. If you listen to the last 2 minutes of that song Cornell displays amazing control and breath support as he lets out a continuous series of savage, powerful wails/screams that he holds with great strength. For me,these 2 minutes have some of Cornell's greatest singing.
NME38 3 years ago 2
i'm glad there is somebody who likes cornell voice without sayng he is god or hot, badmotorfinger for me is one of the best records i've heard, cornell's singing is exellent and full of tecnique
rajuas 3 years ago 10
Yes, a lot of people do call him god, but he is one of my top 3 favorite singers ever. Some people do not realize or understand the skill and support needed to pull off Cornell's style of vocals. He puts so much raw energy and emotion into his singing that its impossible not to be amazed when listening to him. His vocal control is also great. Also, I am glad to see that you appreciate his singing and understand its standout delivery.

great scream videos!! here are some picthes:
slaves one short F5 and one longer (great chest tone here), power trip G5 (is there a live version to be found somwhere??), beyond (chris sings up to F5 in this song, amazing!!!), smokestack thin and falsetto sounding G5 (check out the live version here on youtube, much better), I awake D#5 and E5 in the chorus but the live version from "louder than live" reaches G5, it´s here on youtube.

Also check out "Searching With My Good Eye Closed" the end is fucking spectacular, most of these high notes he hits, he sings them, but at the end of 'Searching...' he screams and its fuckin brilliant
