  • This was their single when I left school end of '85. I remember looking at the back of the 12" and seeing " copyright 1986 " , in Virgin Records Glasgow.

  • from what i remember both Simple Minds and U2 had a lot written about them in fanzines etc about their personal beliefs...mind u...that was a loooong time ago :)

  • another favorite!

  • I my gosh I forgot this song !!!!!!! Tnxs for uploading .....SM are awwwwsooooommeeeee !!!!

  • TY! Prefer studio version over dance-mix-extended-12"-import or live variations. And I don't -watch- youtube, I listen to my youtube playlists aka mix tapes while doing something else entirely and not necessarily something on the computer either. I had my Mtv. Now I just want the music. THANK YOU for posting :)

  • March 2012 --- 5 from 5 --- this is the tour that we:ve all beeen waiting for

  • One of my favorite songs with Simple Minds, Jim Kerr always seemed to be a total sweetheart, he just had this tender side, very attractive..........

  • power to the minds seen them many many years ago in the SFX DUBLIN when i was a pimple faced 21 yo

  • I accept you Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior

  • @albertchandler2 Amen!

  • FUCK U2....these were the real KINGS OF STADIUMS!

  • read that Robin Clarke is no longer with the group. She retired from music to be with her kids. She was also a background singer for Luther Vandross and a lot of great singers.

  • @Isotec1 She is also married to Carlos Alomar, lol

  • Fantastic,fantastic,fantastic,fantastic.

  • Jews?

  • In the mid-1980s, largely on the initiative of Kerr, Simple Minds began to engage publicly in politics, supporting Amnesty Internationaln ,

  • Yes, in 1986 he said that this song was about "Being Sanctified". The reporter asked...."What are the lyrics about"? Jim blurted out.....EXACTLY what they say". He is a Christian. Praise GOD!

  • i miss the 80s

  • Im moist

  • lost angels !

  • SM hit #14 in Bilboard, 3-15-86. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx! Have a great week!

  • Great song by a great band. I saw these guys on the tour for "Once Upon a Time" and they were amazing live!

  • Love this song from them. Uplifting and just great to play on my keys!!!!! : )

  • I thought this song was from 1986?

  • Simple minds are greater than u2

  • Thanks for posting! It's an awesome song!!!!

  • The synths add so much...do they not? ;)

  • Can't speak for anyone else before the agnostics and atheists start but it makes ME,MYSELF think of God,lol! So does Glittering Prize. And the guy that said JK is "spiritual" and not "religious" (i'm NOT religious myself that's another story) is correct. I asked Robin Clarke and Mike Ogletree the same questions on myspace a while back(remember myspace, lol) and got the same answers.

  • who would dislike this song. its the best

  • Thanks for posting this

  • Is this actually a religious song? Is Jim Kerr a religious man?

  • @humboldtus I am not sure, but I think he does believe in God judging by some of the songs...great guy, though, he has a real passion for the talents he has been given...I know he does view YouTube, so maybe he can answer? lol

  • @Mijaseev I think it's more about spiritual independence.

  • @Mijaseev This from Robin Clark when I asked her that same question on myspace a few years back:

  • @Mijaseev Thank you so much for writing, this page was set up for me by someone so I have to remind myself to check it. Jim is a great guy, no he is not Christian but he is very spiritual and he tries to convay that in his music.

Thank you for the complement, I have God, my parents and a wonderful family to thank for that. I also take care of myself as much as I can.

    Love and Peace

    Robin Clark

  • @humboldtus Religious NO! Spiritual YES!

  • @humboldtus Don't read anything into this song. He's Irish, so I'm quite sure he is. Just enjoy the ride.

  • @Angel3243 He's Scottish

  • @bobbybits2 Really, Jim Kerr is Scottish?

  • @Angel3243 Jim Kerr was born and raised in Glasgow in Scotland and is very good friends with Alan Brazil, the ex footballer and now Talk Sport radio breakfast show presenter. They also were in the same class at school and big Celtic supporters, pity they never supported the blue half of Glasgow.

  • @humboldtus No he's not. I asked Robin Clark that question on myspace a few years back because of songs like this and Glittering Prize. She told me he was more "spiritual" than "Christian". Asked Mike Ogletree the same question and got the same answer. Personally I am a Believer and that's what songs like this and Glittering Prize make me think of God. But I don't criticize anyone who doesn't share my beliefs. It's all about RESPECT,lol

  • @humboldtus Christian, not religious!!!!

  • @starlost1957 They are synonymous.

  • @humboldtus No! Christian!!!

  • @humboldtus a message Robin Clark sent me on myspace a few years back when I asked this question: Thank you so much for writing, this page was set up for me by someone so I have to remind myself to check it. Jim is a great guy, no he is not Christian but he is very spiritual and he tries to convay that in his music.

Thank you for the complement, I have God, my parents and a wonderful family to thank for that. I also take care of myself as much as I can.

    Love and Peace

    Robin Clark

  • an incredibly uplifting song! to the two dislikes? wow

  • @jaketroop1 maybe because it is a boring video...but my intent was not to post an amazing video, but only to provide the album version of the song at a time when only live versions were on YouTube.

  • @Mijaseev

Loved the song. Its just great to hear a fantastic vocal and a strong musical performance. thanks for the upload of this classic. :)

  • @Mijaseev I don't think a video was ever made for the single. This is a great upload anyway. :)

  • @jaketroop1

There should be more likes out of 100,000+

  • @humboldtus I don't take it personally if it is about my video, I just hope people can appreciate this music...and really BUY THIS ALBUM IF YOU DON'T HAVE IT!!! IT IS SUCH A GREAT ALBUM!!! Also check out some of Simple Minds' other albums...they have gone through many different phases in style and many members in and out, but still know how to rock each one...

  • I love this song!

  • so many GREAT SONGS were on this track. Awesome!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great group, wish they would come back:)

  • Compaired to their earlier (superior) work it has the subteltie of an attack on the Death Star. But.... I still love it.

  • Great album, great song.

  • so would i but this time i would remember to wear a condom

  • @bregreen72 - Funny! But don't let your kids see that comment lol!

  • I agree with others with the same sentiment.

I'd give up 10 yrs of the 21st century in order to live 1 yr back in the 80's again.

  • awesome band highly underrated

  • Comment removed

  • highly underrated band great song

  • THE 80'S FUKIN AWESOME

  • Not many pop songs have this much power. Good job, boys!

  • Jim Kerr once said in an interview that he liked the imagery of the heart and the cross and nails on various covers of NGD. But that doesn't mean he is "Christian" per se. He also said in the same interview(it may be hear somewhere) that he also like the "hammer and sickle" but that doesn't mean he's a communist. Personally I believe in God and this song and especially Glittering Prize makes me think of that. But we are free to beliveve of not believe what we want. It's about RESPECT.

  • @panamaniak I agree. We are free to believe, and so I do believe that my Best Friend Jesus died for me and my sins. I find it hard not to believe. :)

  • @Martylovescats lol,Amen! :)

  • @panamaniak God Bless with open hearts! Amen!

  • @HeartoftheDragonColo: I presume you dont like any religion, and so you won't see the religios topics in Simple Minds-Lyrics. Yes, the term "Sanctify yourself" is of course citated from the Old Testament, and of course it means the Divine within us all - like it means the same thing in the Old Testament too, but I think you won't see that. - SM did often use Christian symbols, on the cover of New Gold Dream you see a cross and a Jesus-Heart. Do you really think this happened accidentally ?

  • I had this cassette and wore it out. Great album by a great band.

  • Lots of memories !!! In 1984 I was 20, I was the terror...In 1985 I flew first time to Germany and did visited other countries in Europe and one of the concerts I had the opportunity to see was SM in Munich at Olympiahalle - where Olympics happened in 1972... What a great time, booze, girls, cash, cars, you name it...

The 90's were also superb for me, I lived in NYC for 2 years and made good money in the travel industry but never can compare with my 80's. NEVER !!!

  • i love this song

  • I worked at a tanning salon and we were required to play some terrible pop channel, but when the other employees were, gone, i always put on first wave on xm- and my customers thanked me for it!!! and I will never forget hearing this song always at the right moment... truly sanctify yourself!!!

  • only 1 dislike..somebody can't sanctify themself...too bad...we know what it means huh? ... ohhh yeah...tanks Mijaseev..peace out:)

  • @DoUWanna007 The song does correspont to a biblical saying; like this: “And Joshua said unto the people, Sanctify yourselves: for tomorrow the LORD will do wonders among you” (Joshua 3 5). Or in the New Testament: “This is the will of God, even your sanctification” (I Thessalonians 4:3). Jim Kerr is a religios mind...

  • @Joey140964 Interesting that the song does not specify a particular sect or religion, and it doesn't call on you to get a priest or minister to sanctify you, but that you can sanctify yourself. The Divine is within us all and we don't need to call on God for sanctity. I read the lyrics and they don't mention the Old or New Testament.

  • How many people listening to this actually understand what "sanctify yourself" means, I wonder??

  • One of my favorite sings! God bless the 80's!!!

  • JUST SOME AWESOME MUSIC !!! NOT LIKE THE CRAP OF THESE DAYS WHERE "ARTISTS" JUST SING BUT CANT EVEN PLAY A GUITAR OR DRUMS AND THE 80´S WILL STILL BE HEARD IN 30 YRS. WHEN ALL OTHER MODERN SINGERS WONT BE REMEMBERED NO MORE ....

  • @10000lightningbugz two thumbs up could'nt agree more!!!

  • Vintage 80's!!! I'd give my left nut to be able to jump into this time machine & travel back 25 years just to experience once again the amazing vibes, wonderful feelings & bursting sensations that I was able to experience while being serenaded by awesome music such as this, at that time ((as this 12 year old!))! The 80's!!!

  • This used to be my Friday night Track before going out!!!! Fucking great album!!!

  • Wonderful people from Scotland!!! This is really for me timeless.... Jim is now solo, but in 2012 the band will be back, he has promised a few weeks ago on TV!!!

  • I remember being a kid in the 80's watching their videos on U68 in New York. Jim Kerr always looked like he was having a good time. This summer I met one of his relatives who also had the same vibe.

  • I'm 54 years old.I never listened to Simple Minds before today. I'm so glad I have now.

  • @indianajoe56 you would also love a band called the alarm, start with spirit of 76

  • @mewzikmaestro : I am aware of them . I have a few of their early works. Thanks for the reminder!

  • And much appreciation for uploading this version.

  • these have gotta be 1 off the best bands i've seen live.x

  • Both I and my friend Patrick B dislike live music....

  • I had this on vinyl and I'd give anything to go back in time.

  • I love this song both original and live versions

  • sanctiffy

  • sanctifyyyyy!

  • It's such a shame that today's generation can't / doesn't appreciate music from this era. Such great memories for me. The hip hop / rap crap and todays pop music just doesn't have any soul to it.

  • ....who's the weeney who didn't like it above in the vote??? Sheesh...listen to it again..then you will...set yourself freeeeeeeeeee....

  • the kick ass at roskilde festival 1992

  • Thanks! A great classic!

  • so many songs that I loved in the 80' I hear now and wonder what the hell was I thinking liking this garbage..however...this one still holds up as an awesome song!!!!

  • top song by a top band i love 80s

  • FANTASTIC!!!! FANTASTIC!!! FANTASTIC

  • @12freemind12 agreed!!!!!

  • Hit #3 rock, #14 pop in the US (Billboard). How'd it do in the UK? God bless!

  • @DaveWollenberg It hit no 10 in the UK

  • god bless john crighton god bless hary thompson

  • sexy

  • @lexdh9

    definitely...!

  • Takes me back...back in the day

  • It's a crazy thought but I'd give my last day on earth go back in the 80's

to listen to a song like this again in the same environment and time.

  • @vellotrol I know the feeling. The 80's were a time of unique and special music when musicians were true artists and not the garbage that most artists are today. I can connect to so many songs from the 80's that remind me of important times and memories.

  • @Ronadv1 Every generation says that lol... although I do know what you are saying

  • @vellotrol I would too !!!!!!

  • @vellotrol I love the positive lyrics and yet the beat doesn't sound like it's old, grainy, doesn't sound too light light or mellow and doesn't even seem hypnotic or haunting(like some 70's hits and some 80's) Though life has always been a mess even 25 years later Jim Kerr and the band's positive message and easy beat should be our inspiration to want to " purify ourselves, purify our lives, et.

  • @vellotrol Same here man..I would love to go back to around 1979 to 1986 & just stay there,,,Everything sucks today--Music, movies & TV..

  • @ccg1171 today doesn't suck at all! just let it go and smile and dance :)

  • @vellotrol i do it all the time. as bizarre as it sounds, just be upbeat and let yourself dance. fuck the rest.

  • @vellotrol hey here's a thought...why don't we build a time machine? I'll volunteer my old station wagon-more people can fit in it

and its not some gay-ass minivan!

  • @vellotrol We can in our hearts hon.

  • @vellotrol so would I!

  • @vellotrol

This where the days:-) I miss them too.

  • @vellotrol I soo agree... This always tranports me back to a better time... more innocent.. I can't get enough of the 80's... our era :-)

  • @vellotrol You would give up that easy?? Crazy perhaps you are. I seen them live in the 80`s Brilliant as it was. its not what there singing about. Life goes on

  • @vellotrol i think same way, got 80' stick in my days

  • @vellotrol oh hell yea miss the 80's so bad those were my teenage years!!!

  • @vellotrol totally agree when the scientists invent time machines for everyone thats the era im off to.

    miss them days soooooooo much

  • @vellotrol

    I'm right with ya man!!! : )

  • I prefer this neat version too. Thanks so much for posting it!!

  • Thank you Mijaseev

  • Good times

  • good old times

  • por Dios...

  • The bass playing is just insane on this album. I mean, full on great powerful band, what a combo of musicians. The remaster sounds incredible if you get a chance to pop in a hi-end CD player. Just adds to the power of the music, on YouTube, its cool, but nothing like it in full fidelity.

  • @wendileona bloody brilliant comment could'nt agree more!!

  • AAAHHH goodtimes Simple Minds rocks!

  • desde que la escuche me santifique... maravillosa rola!! its amazing

  • there class.. they dont need to be like bono whos sold out.. i like U2 but bono just gets on ya tits tryin to put the world right.... sm just the best.......

  • @deno909

Yeah preaching about the environment, then playing a concert in NY and London on the same day having chartered a plane to make the trip. They should stick to music.

  • Bono understands that making money means nothing unless you make meaning.

  • I like it!!!.....

  • Excelente disco.

  • RESPEC TO UPLOADER, AND SORRY FOR THE CAPS lock, loves to all. x esp 'smple mnds'

  • Thanks Mij- I agree with you wholeheartedly!

  • When this album was released, SM were the poor Man's U2.

Shame Jim Kerr relaxed and let Bono be media whore is now.

I saw SM in Leeds in 88 and they were fucking brilliant. Far better than U2 at elland rd in 87

  • @twattybollock

U3 as my mate referred to them today.....

  • Live versions and concerts as just that, great for being there, but listening to them on CD or you tube sucks...can't appreciate the actual music with all the background noise and poor audio...leave that for the concerts and live on stage performances...

  • One thing this band seemed to always do exquisitely was match the lyrics to the music.

  • Excelente tema,no me canso de escucharlo.

  • simple minds, simply one of the best of all times

  • i love this song's thundering rhythm section

  • usually the live version of a song has better organics but hear the studio version really shines brightly. i went to high school with these songs. sweet memories still.

  • Simply one of the best songs of the 80s by simply one of the best groups of that new gold decade

  • thnx dude, I was sick of the live versions

  • Great song, and yes, I prefer the original rather than the live versions/remixes. Thanks alot!

  • Agreed!

  • I sang this song in every last school day; i think was good for those moments

  • @007rvs007rvs originals are always the best

  • I always loved this band and song

  • awesome bass what chords is he using anybody?

  • I rather hear this than the live versions. Thanks.

  • I do as well Thx

  • finally somebody uploaded the original extended version. Iremember dancing to this years ago> Thanks for the memories.

  • Thanks for posting this. I love this version so much.

  • great song

  • Good to hear the album and not all the live versions out there!
