This was their single when I left school end of '85. I remember looking at the back of the 12" and seeing " copyright 1986 " , in Virgin Records Glasgow.
from what i remember both Simple Minds and U2 had a lot written about them in fanzines etc about their personal beliefs...mind u...that was a loooong time ago :)
Oooo I missed this song! Went through multiple cassette tapes of the album but only remembered SM for 1 OVERplayed song. geeesh I'm gonna get my 80s card revoked
TY! Prefer studio version over dance-mix-extended-12"-import or live variations. And I don't -watch- youtube, I listen to my youtube playlists aka mix tapes while doing something else entirely and not necessarily something on the computer either. I had my Mtv. Now I just want the music. THANK YOU for posting :)
read that Robin Clarke is no longer with the group. She retired from music to be with her kids. She was also a background singer for Luther Vandross and a lot of great singers.
Yes, in 1986 he said that this song was about "Being Sanctified". The reporter asked...."What are the lyrics about"? Jim blurted out.....EXACTLY what they say". He is a Christian. Praise GOD!
Can't speak for anyone else before the agnostics and atheists start but it makes ME,MYSELF think of God,lol! So does Glittering Prize. And the guy that said JK is "spiritual" and not "religious" (i'm NOT religious myself that's another story) is correct. I asked Robin Clarke and Mike Ogletree the same questions on myspace a while back(remember myspace, lol) and got the same answers.
@humboldtus I am not sure, but I think he does believe in God judging by some of the songs...great guy, though, he has a real passion for the talents he has been given...I know he does view YouTube, so maybe he can answer? lol
@Mijaseev Thank you so much for writing, this page was set up for me by someone so I have to remind myself to check it. Jim is a great guy, no he is not Christian but he is very spiritual and he tries to convay that in his music.
Thank you for the complement, I have God, my parents and a wonderful family to thank for that. I also take care of myself as much as I can.
@Angel3243 Jim Kerr was born and raised in Glasgow in Scotland and is very good friends with Alan Brazil, the ex footballer and now Talk Sport radio breakfast show presenter. They also were in the same class at school and big Celtic supporters, pity they never supported the blue half of Glasgow.
@humboldtus No he's not. I asked Robin Clark that question on myspace a few years back because of songs like this and Glittering Prize. She told me he was more "spiritual" than "Christian". Asked Mike Ogletree the same question and got the same answer. Personally I am a Believer and that's what songs like this and Glittering Prize make me think of God. But I don't criticize anyone who doesn't share my beliefs. It's all about RESPECT,lol
@humboldtus a message Robin Clark sent me on myspace a few years back when I asked this question: Thank you so much for writing, this page was set up for me by someone so I have to remind myself to check it. Jim is a great guy, no he is not Christian but he is very spiritual and he tries to convay that in his music.

@jaketroop1 maybe because it is a boring video...but my intent was not to post an amazing video, but only to provide the album version of the song at a time when only live versions were on YouTube.
@humboldtus I don't take it personally if it is about my video, I just hope people can appreciate this music...and really BUY THIS ALBUM IF YOU DON'T HAVE IT!!! IT IS SUCH A GREAT ALBUM!!! Also check out some of Simple Minds' other albums...they have gone through many different phases in style and many members in and out, but still know how to rock each one...
Jim Kerr once said in an interview that he liked the imagery of the heart and the cross and nails on various covers of NGD. But that doesn't mean he is "Christian" per se. He also said in the same interview(it may be hear somewhere) that he also like the "hammer and sickle" but that doesn't mean he's a communist. Personally I believe in God and this song and especially Glittering Prize makes me think of that. But we are free to beliveve of not believe what we want. It's about RESPECT.
@HeartoftheDragonColo: I presume you dont like any religion, and so you won't see the religios topics in Simple Minds-Lyrics. Yes, the term "Sanctify yourself" is of course citated from the Old Testament, and of course it means the Divine within us all - like it means the same thing in the Old Testament too, but I think you won't see that. - SM did often use Christian symbols, on the cover of New Gold Dream you see a cross and a Jesus-Heart. Do you really think this happened accidentally ?
@Joey140964 Everyone is entitled to their own interpretation of songs, but to me the religious symbolism and lyrics are too clear to have been unintentional. One example, in Promised You A Miracle, the lyrics include "pearls of great price", a Biblical reference. At the very least, Simple Minds music is highly spiritual
Lots of memories !!! In 1984 I was 20, I was the terror...In 1985 I flew first time to Germany and did visited other countries in Europe and one of the concerts I had the opportunity to see was SM in Munich at Olympiahalle - where Olympics happened in 1972... What a great time, booze, girls, cash, cars, you name it...
The 90's were also superb for me, I lived in NYC for 2 years and made good money in the travel industry but never can compare with my 80's. NEVER !!!
I worked at a tanning salon and we were required to play some terrible pop channel, but when the other employees were, gone, i always put on first wave on xm- and my customers thanked me for it!!! and I will never forget hearing this song always at the right moment... truly sanctify yourself!!!
@DoUWanna007 The song does correspont to a biblical saying; like this: “And Joshua said unto the people, Sanctify yourselves: for tomorrow the LORD will do wonders among you” (Joshua 3 5). Or in the New Testament: “This is the will of God, even your sanctification” (I Thessalonians 4:3). Jim Kerr is a religios mind...
@Joey140964 Interesting that the song does not specify a particular sect or religion, and it doesn't call on you to get a priest or minister to sanctify you, but that you can sanctify yourself. The Divine is within us all and we don't need to call on God for sanctity. I read the lyrics and they don't mention the Old or New Testament.
JUST SOME AWESOME MUSIC !!! NOT LIKE THE CRAP OF THESE DAYS WHERE "ARTISTS" JUST SING BUT CANT EVEN PLAY A GUITAR OR DRUMS AND THE 80´S WILL STILL BE HEARD IN 30 YRS. WHEN ALL OTHER MODERN SINGERS WONT BE REMEMBERED NO MORE ....
Vintage 80's!!! I'd give my left nut to be able to jump into this time machine & travel back 25 years just to experience once again the amazing vibes, wonderful feelings & bursting sensations that I was able to experience while being serenaded by awesome music such as this, at that time ((as this 12 year old!))! The 80's!!!
Wonderful people from Scotland!!! This is really for me timeless.... Jim is now solo, but in 2012 the band will be back, he has promised a few weeks ago on TV!!!
I remember being a kid in the 80's watching their videos on U68 in New York. Jim Kerr always looked like he was having a good time. This summer I met one of his relatives who also had the same vibe.
It's such a shame that today's generation can't / doesn't appreciate music from this era. Such great memories for me. The hip hop / rap crap and todays pop music just doesn't have any soul to it.
so many songs that I loved in the 80' I hear now and wonder what the hell was I thinking liking this garbage..however...this one still holds up as an awesome song!!!!
@vellotrol I know the feeling. The 80's were a time of unique and special music when musicians were true artists and not the garbage that most artists are today. I can connect to so many songs from the 80's that remind me of important times and memories.
@vellotrol I love the positive lyrics and yet the beat doesn't sound like it's old, grainy, doesn't sound too light light or mellow and doesn't even seem hypnotic or haunting(like some 70's hits and some 80's) Though life has always been a mess even 25 years later Jim Kerr and the band's positive message and easy beat should be our inspiration to want to " purify ourselves, purify our lives, et.
@vellotrol You would give up that easy?? Crazy perhaps you are. I seen them live in the 80`s Brilliant as it was. its not what there singing about. Life goes on
The bass playing is just insane on this album. I mean, full on great powerful band, what a combo of musicians. The remaster sounds incredible if you get a chance to pop in a hi-end CD player. Just adds to the power of the music, on YouTube, its cool, but nothing like it in full fidelity.
there class.. they dont need to be like bono whos sold out.. i like U2 but bono just gets on ya tits tryin to put the world right.... sm just the best.......
Yeah preaching about the environment, then playing a concert in NY and London on the same day having chartered a plane to make the trip. They should stick to music.
Live versions and concerts as just that, great for being there, but listening to them on CD or you tube sucks...can't appreciate the actual music with all the background noise and poor audio...leave that for the concerts and live on stage performances...
usually the live version of a song has better organics but hear the studio version really shines brightly. i went to high school with these songs. sweet memories still.
This was their single when I left school end of '85. I remember looking at the back of the 12" and seeing " copyright 1986 " , in Virgin Records Glasgow.

The bass playing is just insane on this album. I mean, full on great powerful band, what a combo of musicians. The remaster sounds incredible if you get a chance to pop in a hi-end CD player. Just adds to the power of the music, on YouTube, its cool, but nothing like it in full fidelity.

Yeah preaching about the environment, then playing a concert in NY and London on the same day having chartered a plane to make the trip. They should stick to music.

Bono understands that making money means nothing unless you make meaning.

When this album was released, SM were the poor Man's U2.
Shame Jim Kerr relaxed and let Bono be media whore is now.
I saw SM in Leeds in 88 and they were fucking brilliant. Far better than U2 at elland rd in 87

Live versions and concerts as just that, great for being there, but listening to them on CD or you tube sucks...can't appreciate the actual music with all the background noise and poor audio...leave that for the concerts and live on stage performances...

One thing this band seemed to always do exquisitely was match the lyrics to the music.

usually the live version of a song has better organics but hear the studio version really shines brightly. i went to high school with these songs. sweet memories still.
