  • I know it is to clearly show the trends but the logarithmic scale of wealth in Hans' talks fail to show the absolutely massive difference in wealth, but also the massive changes that are going on.

  • This is very misguiding. The poverty line should not remain at 1 dollar over the years since the US dollar has depreciated by so much already and will be pushed down to zero because of the anticapitalist institution of the Federal Reserve.

  • @truevoice08 It's adjusted for purchasing power. Sheesh, he even says it less than a minute into the video.

  • I would like to see the same an animation that showed "Which percentage of the total income is given to rich people". He could produce a graph if he multiplied the y-axis on his graph by the income.

  • @anotherelvis

Search for his TEDtalks. I remember that it was something like the world richest 25% have about 2/3 of all money.

The developing countries are growing at a much faster rate then most of the industrialised so in 50-100 years almost all the people in the world will have a better living standard than people in industrialised nations have today.

I have also seen statistics that show world population will peak at 10 billion so the big problem left is the enviroment =/

  • why count the poor?

    they dont consume, fuck em

  • he doesnt factor in the inflation thats happened since 1970

  • sharing economic growth = dropping economic growth = more poor people..

    great idea

  • What about the changeing value of 1$ through time?

I would belive that Hans Rosling would add that to his calculations, but he never says anything about it. If one bread had the price of 1$ in 1970 it would have a higher dollarprice in 2005.

If you're gonna messure diffrent currencies as well as the changing value of 1$ through time: You get a hell of a lot of data

Hans Rosling has probarly added this data to his diagram, but a confirmasion would be make it easier not to doubt it.

  • At 0:35 he says the dollars are adjusted for purchasing power.

  • These are U.N. data. Try listening before attacking. Almost all the improvement came from India, China and Indonesia. Most of Africa and South America did not improve.

  • Bullshit, confusing minds!

"Data is based on the local purchasing power of the local currency" /ausim/ BUT (!) that says nothing about powerty! UN claimes that number of people in powerty grows, in this vid, it reduces...

Trend shows that most of people live with 5 dollars a day. Is it ok? You have to pay not just for food, but for shelter, clothes and taxes too! It is too optimistic + this crisis...

    Analyze!

  • The number is growing, but the percentage is going down...

5 dollars a day would mean you're pretty damn poor if you're living in America but some places, 5 dollars can get a lot.

Regardless, I agree with you this is a little too optimistic. The basic message of it is: "Don't worry, somebody else has it handled" and that is not the right thing to tell people in light the growing -number- of impoverished peoples.

  • Can someone explain how inflation is taken into account here? I can't believe Hans Rosling would have ignored such an important effect.

  • At 0:31 he sais "these dollars are adjusted for purchasing power" to enable comparisons between different countries. That should also enable comparisons between different times.

  • yeah you forgot that prices and wages increase with inflation so that poverty line should move to the right with the wages. A dollar a day in 1980 is nothing like a dollar a day now.

  • I totally agree, I dont know which stupid gave you thumbs down!

  • At the beginning of the video he said that the data was adjusted for purchasing power. That means he has already taken inflation into account.

  • The whole movement to the right trend is great and all, but the logarithmic scale on the horizontal axis bothers me...

  • I wondered what I make in terms of day:

    $16.54 an hour. $34403.20yr/365days = $94.25.

I consider myself not middle class.

More people making more than a buck a day means they're not starving. Now they're just simply miserable- no medicalcare, utilities, sewers, clothing, art, entertainment.

I'm not content. I stil have a roomy and 401k takes all money for any worthwile vacation, not to mention any dr expense. But I should be happy, accordng to the chart, I'm living high on the hog!!

  • Compared to truly poor ppl you are.

  • less than one dollar a day is considered extreme poverty. No food, no shelter, living is a daily struggle, widespread of disease.

  • but doesnt it depend on what you can buy with that $1?! How is it adjusted?

  • but if u only have 1$ day and you dont spend it on food and shelter and things like that your not going to be spending that 1$ for very long

  • Data is based on the local purchasing power of the local currency

  • sound good

  • Saw your stuff in TED a while back, you are one of my favorite TED talkers! The only one ive seen who has swallowed a sword!
